With the House of Representatives set to vote tomorrow to override President Bush's veto of the SCHIP children's health care bill, MoveOn has announced a major new TV ad campaign threatening congressional Republicans "who stand with President Bush and against providing health care for millions of children."

From MoveOn:

The ad, titled "Bethany's Story," will begin airing next week. It features Bethany Wilkerson, a two-year-old girl who was born with several holes in her heart. Bethany's parents were unable to afford private health insurance, and only because of the SCHIP children's health care program is she healthy today. [...]

USAction and MoveOn.org Political Action will release a 30-second version of the spot, which will be run in the districts of Representatives who vote with President Bush, early next week.

That ad is more than a bit misleading.

She was able to get the healthcare she needed due to the S-CHIP program. She still qualifies today. She will continue to qualify. Nothing is being cut as the ad would have you believe. There is even a $5billion dollar expansion bill on the table. Politics are being played on both sides of the aisle here.

Using a 2 year old to push a political agenda (from either side of the aisle) is rather disturbing.

The ad is also an ad hominem attack. Iraq has absolutely nothing to do with the bill being discussed. I know people will say that if we weren't spending billions in Iraq, we could afford the bill. My response - Has Bush not being able to pay for something ever stopped him from approving it?

I think the argument being made is that SCHIP worked for this kid and therefore expanding it to other kids would be a good thing.

The veto means that some kids on the existing program would be cut because last year's funding is not enough to cover this year's expenditures. Even the $5 billion wouldn't cover the existing children.

Putting a face on CHILDRENS HEALTH CARE, I don't have a problem with it but I can concede that point.

I don't think it's an ad hominem attack, Iraq is relevant because money if fungible. Part of the complaint is 'how will this be funded'. The ad argues that Bush can find money for things he wants. Most people would be willing to leave Iraq a week early to cover this.

That said, people should look into their state's SCHIP program and encourage people to sign up if their eligible.

You made some valid points and although I do not necessarily agree with all your conclusions I appreciate your reply. It is nice to have some civil discourse about politics in today's vitriol environment. Thank you.

I'm not surprised if the REPUKES will have an HYSTERICAL/ILLOGICAL Rebuke Ad.
