2007-10-17-ColbforPrez.JPGNBC has confirmed that Stephen Colbert will appear on this week's "Meet The Press" with Tim Russert to discuss his book, I Am America (And So Can You!), which he seems to be threatening to promote by running for president. UPDATE AND CORRECTION: Colbert will be the ONLY comedian, not part of a slate as originally suggested. Alas, we completely misunderstood our source — through the course of an email exchange no less — but ETP takes full responsibility for the misrepresentation. It did sort of seem a bit bizarro but who ever knows what Tim Russert has up his sleeve? Or in that giant head of his? There is room for all sorts of stuff in there. Post as it was originally published but totally inaccurate below; ETP regrets the error but will still be watching because we're just that devoted.

Previous wording, now completely wrong, though the named comedians have appeared on MTP in the past:
Also appearing with Colbert will apparently be other comics including Jay Leno, Mark Russell and Steve Bridges — yes, that Steve Bridges, the President Bush impersonator whom Colbert last appeared with at that infamous White House Correspondents Dinner. We're not entirely sure what's planned, but we're always pleased when politics, media and comedy intersect. One small nit, though: Why no funny women? Amy Poehler who does a mean Hillary? Kirsten Wiig as Pelosi? We're just saying. (We know, so out of character!) Okay, see you Sunday. P.S. If you want to sleep in, go ahead — we hear it'll be at the end of the show.

Pat Paulsen (RIP) who wasn't as funny as Stephen Colbert showed up on a few TV shows when he was running for President. According to IMDB though there's no listing for a "serious" news program. Paulsen, though, wasn't playing a character when he was running and I don't think even though he was a satirist that he was being all that satirical when he was running... Maybe he was. I don't know... But he just wasn't that engaging. Colbert as Colbert the talk show loony and narcissist is pure shtick and shows up the MSM (TV &radio) to be the pack of infotainment clowns that they are. And he's making a decent living at it too, I guess. And he certainly is a lot more popular than Pat Paulsen who ran in every election from 1968-1984.

Now there's a "gutly" move. I hope his primary agenda is finding Billy, his lost American Eagle. Come home Billy!!

Colbert can do no wrong, he's too smart. I don't know where he's taking this latest bit, but he will come out reputation and 'Colbert' character in tact, and the political process won't suffer. Even if his hijinks did affect the election outcome, our political system is all theater (and one big joke) anyway. It could use a shake up.

complete stupidity of russet and the media--giving time to a comic in a serious time in our history shows their disrespect for intelligent citizens and gossip for all others--shame on you idiots of the press!!!

Come on, it's just an amusing publicity stunt.

In fact, Colbert's satire is more likely to inform people than the mainstream media junk most are watching anyway.

You are overlooking that Colbert has already agreed to accept the VP position with Mike Huckabee. He repeatedly states that Huckabee offered him the position three times. He says, though, that if he were nominated by a party, he would take Huck as a VP, since it would be right to return the favor.

None of us can be sure if any of this was "serious," or just high comedy, but I think it has at least a strong element of seriousness. Colbert is coming out in favor of the conservative family values of Huckabee. Does that mean that the "real life" Colbert is conservative? I think he's neither conservative nor liberal but simply intelligent.

I vote for Colbert on the Intelligence Ticket, and if Huck is his VP, I accept that too, as Huck is no dope either, whatever anyone thinks of his beliefs in Creation. Colbert (the character) says that he too believes in Creation, but I suspect that Colbert (the man) also believes in it. I believe in it and I'm not stupid either.

Clearly you're not getting the satire if you think the real Colbert is a creationist. He's a product of the Daily Show and he and Stewart are good friends. You're missing something if you think Colbert is a fan of Bush, too. The Correspondents Dinner shows that.

I stand in awe of Stephen Colbert and Jon Stewart. To anyone who is not amused: get a sense of humor.
But my main question is: with the capmaign finance reform laws we have in place, how will he finance it? He can't have Viacom giving it's money to the campaign can he? And I doubt Stephen is rich enough yet to do it out of his own pocket. And while I love you Stephen, I don't think I will contribute anything.

This establishes a compelling reason to establish a new line on voting machines, "None of the candidates listed or None of the Above.". Since it is most difficult to impossible to write in the name of an alternate to those listed on the slate of candidates. Yes, one could skip voting too but some polling places give a cup of coffee to voters as a reward for voting. It isn't easy to get a cup of coffee for free.

People are actually compaining about Colbert???
How about complaining about Iraq, the next war in Iran, the Supreme Court chosen Resident of the White House, the horrible veotes, the Blue Dog Senators, the Republicons, etc.

Get a grip. Colbert is great.

I'd rather have Stephen Colbert doing his outrageously funny shtick to plug his book on MTP than Ann Coulter doing her hateful shtick to plug her's.

If Colbert places well in either party's primary, young America will be substantially revitalised in their political involvement. That's a great thing for our country.

Being as popular as he is, I bet he draws an unprecedented amount of small money donors.

Also, Colbert's quick wit wins any debate easily.

No one has asked this: As a candidate, can Colbert continue to conduct his show? I know Law & Order is not benching the Fred Thompson episodes, although Fred doesn't go on & on about how great he is every night.

Anyone of you folks ever heard of Pat Paulson, comedian turn Presidential candidate? Besides Colbert is doing nothing but blatenting illustrating how inane the procedure has become.
The sad part of this story is that the American People really do deserve a third party that represents the American People not some corporation or special interest group. With the dems rolling over like my dog goober when he sees a treat and the repugs with their head in the sand, it is a pathetic political process. I cannot for the life of me see any possibility of anything changing regardless of who is elected.

I'm with Drrick. Colbert has gone one rather misguiding step too far. This candidacy schtick is NOT funny, and neither will his entire act if he persists in this non-non-sense.

Agree: seriously bad career move. First seriously UNfunny act of his career. Fatal.

As for fathead Russert bringing him on Meet the ImPRESSed, my own disgust over all of this is amplified a hundred-fold. The very thought of this Sunday's Timmy Show is sickening.

If you don't like any of the candidates (including Colbert), vote for Tom in 2008. He was the FIRST person to declare for the Presidency in 2008. The corporate media has consistently refused to give him any attention at all. Also, Colbert still refuses to debate him.

Check it out for yourself:

Colbert becomes a joke and that's the worst thing for any celebrity, politician or in this case, a comedian. He's 'seriousness' as a well-liked and acute comedian is over. Bad career move. Very bad.

How is his career over? It's his job to point out the flaws in the political system and those who operate with in it. At times he makes it funny, at other times common sense makes it funny. What's wrong with him trying to shake things up and actually take a stand? How can the things that he makes fun of ever change if no one is willing to try something different?

Stephen Colbert would be the only reason I would believe anything on "Russett = Bullcrap". I urge you Stephen to mess with them all you want. My guess is Stephen is the only candidate of either party that would not give immunity to the telecoms. Colbert 2008!!!!
