I Like ItI Don’t Like It

2007-10-17-ColbforPrez.JPGNBC has confirmed that Stephen Colbert will appear on this week's "Meet The Press" with Tim Russert to discuss his book, I Am America (And So Can You!), which he seems to be threatening to promote by running for president. UPDATE AND CORRECTION: Colbert will be the ONLY comedian, not part of a slate as originally suggested. Alas, we completely misunderstood our source — through the course of an email exchange no less — but ETP takes full responsibility for the misrepresentation. It did sort of seem a bit bizarro but who ever knows what Tim Russert has up his sleeve? Or in that giant head of his? There is room for all sorts of stuff in there. Post as it was originally published but totally inaccurate below; ETP regrets the error but will still be watching because we're just that devoted.

Previous wording, now completely wrong, though the named comedians have appeared on MTP in the past:
Also appearing with Colbert will apparently be other comics including Jay Leno, Mark Russell and Steve Bridges — yes, that Steve Bridges, the President Bush impersonator whom Colbert last appeared with at that infamous White House Correspondents Dinner. We're not entirely sure what's planned, but we're always pleased when politics, media and comedy intersect. One small nit, though: Why no funny women? Amy Poehler who does a mean Hillary? Kirsten Wiig as Pelosi? We're just saying. (We know, so out of character!) Okay, see you Sunday. P.S. If you want to sleep in, go ahead — we hear it'll be at the end of the show.

This guy's act gets very very old, after about
5 seconds. He is as boring as the "guy" he
plays. And now the idiot decides to mess up the
REAL election. Is it any wonder why we elect
morons like BUSH, when we have someone like
Colbert pulling this kind of stupid act?

Who was pulling this sort of "stupid act" when Bush was elected?? Oh yeah no one! So why not vote Colbert? He'll be ten times better than any of the so called "real" candidates!

He's planning on running in both primaries but the Democratic rules might not let him run in their primary. So, if he runs in the Republican primary as his conservative alter ego, he just might mess them up good.

He's running only in S Carolina, and, as a Democrat AND a Republican. Its fitting because there are 2 Stephen Colberts.

The nominating process is so bad, Colbert's ability to make mischief in the important SC primary is what the parties deserve. By the way, he will win SC in both parties, and thus will get to vote SC's delegates at both conventions. God willing, some candidate will need his delegates.

Stephen is brilliant and progressive almost to a fault, and a born leader. I would vote for him for President, I mean really. I truly think he would make a better President than just about any other announced candidate. Let's see, who would make a better President than Stephen Colbert? Maybe Dennis K, but probably not.

Now I'm imagining him as the Democratic candidate, and debating Giuliani. Guess what. Colbert wins that election. Vs. McCain, Colbert wins that too.

OK, I'm going too far, but I am glad to see him running in the SC primaries.

I doubt that Colbert will really run--just more of his schtick I am sure--but it would sorta be like life imitating art--following in the footsteps of the Robin Williams film--"Man of The Year"

First Cosby, now Colbert? What is this, Meet the Press or Last Comic Standing?

I adore Stephen Colbert but this move was a bad miscalculation on his part.

There is nothing funny about very close elections where a phoney candidate could actually make a difference.

Also comedians entering politics -Al Franken being the exception- suggest a nihilism about politics which I haven't quite accepted yet.

Bad move Stephen- You were riding on the top of the world. Why this stupid "stunt?"

Nihilism? A bit strong, don't you think? Considering we live in a country that elects for its Presidents and other high positions Bedtime for Bonzo -- the Terminator -- the Love Boat -- professional baseball and football players -- Dirty Harry -- Die Hard celebrities -- just to name a few.

This will be the first time I will watch Meet the Press since Russert and company joined the bandwagon to ignore the overwhelming intelligence at the time that Saddam had no WMDs and was an enemy of al Qaeda to help cheerlead the American people into supporting Bush's invasion of Iraq. I realized then that Meet the Press and Russert had no integrity as journalists or as human beings.

Colbert is alot more interesting as a candidate than John McCain, Mitt Romney, Hillary Clinton, John Edwards, Barak Obama, Rudy Giuliani, Fred Thompson, etc. He makes more sense than all of them combined -- a bunch of lying, murderous candidates ready to kill young Americans and Iraqis in cynical, career enhancing policies that are simply against our troops.

Colbert for President of South Carolina!!!!!!!!

Miscalculation? No. It's brilliant. Colbert is thoroughly capable of gumming up the works. His bid for presidency has the potential to become a practical demonstration of the inadequacies and outright stupidity of our electoral process, and will be vastly entertaining at the same time.

Granted, as a disenfranchised voter in Florida, I have an election reform axe to grind, but it will still be funny.

Irksome

I love to laugh but I don't find funny a failed nation with a failed electoral process.

While he will expose this he is playing with fire regarding "gumming up the works" as you call it.

Will be watching Meet the Press
