Anderson Cooper Gets Bugged Out In Brazil

First Posted: 3/28/08 Updated: 5/25/11

E! Online's Planet Gossip Blog:

Anderson Cooper isn't the outdoorsy type.

Just ask the silver fox anchorman what it was like shooting Planet in Peril, the new four-hour environmental-issues series he did with Animal Planet host Jeff Corwin. The two, along with CNN's chief medical correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta, crossed four continents and 13 countries for the series, which debuts on CNN Tues., Oct. 23.

"What I really learned is you actually have to go into nature to report on the environment, which is sort of annoying because I really don't like nature very much," Cooper said last night at a Netflix-hosted preview of the series at Grauman's Chinese Theater in Hollywood. "And to be with Jeff Corwin, who really does seem to enjoy it, was a little disconcerting."

Apart from Anderson's dislike of the jungle, the concern for wildlife being sold/smuggled to China for food and medicine is a very real concern.
Exotic and endangered wildlife is often thought of in China as having exotic effects on people's health, so, there is a growing market in these animals.
While snake or turtle soup will certainly make your yang stand up and make you very warm in winter, some animals are consumed for their uniqueness alone.

One of CNN's advertising sponsors for this project is ConocoPhillips. As part of a 2005 settlement with the EPA and 4 states, CP has delayed putting in over a half billion dollars worth of emissions controls at refineries. CP is also planning to expand its Wood River, IL refinery in order to process heavy crude oil derived from Canadian tar sands. This process will not only profoundly damage an area of pristine Canadian wilderness in Alberta, the process releases great amounts of carbon dioxide that is threatening Canada's ability to fulfill its commitment to the Kyoto Protocol.

If they want to be taken seriously, one would think that CNN would have sought a corporate sponsor who was more concerned about the environment than CP.

“Anderson was acting like the first person who gets killed in a horror movie.”

That's a funny line. I much pefer nature as a general concept than as a reality, myself. I grew up in Maine where blackflies would occassionally carry off one of the smaller children.

New idea for SNL "Gays in Jungle" because "Gays in Space" have crash landed in the Amazon in search for ultimate lube.
