The British Broadcasting Corporation said Thursday that it would eliminate 2,500 positions and make 10 percent fewer shows by 2013 as it adjusts to a smaller-than-hoped-for budget and a more competitive media landscape.

The cuts have angered employees, who are threatening to strike, but the BBC said the moves were necessary.

I'd take BBC World over ANY US news outlet. Not only does it cover all the international news that the American MSM ignores but it's interviews on Hard Talk ask the hard hitting, no holds barred questions of world leaders that any responsible news organization in a democracy should be asking. Sadly, such incisive journalism has not been seen in this country since Murrow and Cronkite. Hopefully these budget cuts won't impact too severely on their service.

BBC radio has a show about algae biodiesel, saying how it has a much higher acre-yield than other biofuel feedstock and how it is grown in the desert thereby not competing with food, and a couple days later BBC fires 2500 people.

coincidence or conspiracy?

The venerable BBC which we all thought to be a source of unadulterated news showed it's true colors with the report of [World Trade Center building 7] collapse 20 minutes before it actually happened. They still haven't given a satisfactory answer for this anomily. Another institutions turns out not to be what we thought it was.
Another media source now known to be compromised. Good luck at getting your credibility back.

Current BBC licensing fees are around $600 a year. They don't own their equiptment and lease their airtime. And NOW they're cutting back? A lot of Brits are still pissed off that now they're trying to say "any video source"(cell phones, TV's, PC's, etc.) that can show video are covered under the Licensing Agreement. Good luck trying to enforce that one.
