Leaders of the Senate Intelligence Committee reached a tentative agreement on Wednesday with the Bush administration that would give telephone carriers legal immunity for any role they played in the National Security Agency's domestic eavesdropping program approved by President Bush after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, a Congressional official said Wednesday.

Senators this week began reviewing classified documents related to the participation of the telephone carriers in the security agency program and came away from that early review convinced that the companies had "acted in good faith" in cooperating with what they believed was a legal and presidentially authorized program and that they should not be punished through civil litigation for their roles, the official said.

This "deal" has the smell of the telephone company lobbyists, and their money, all over it. It's not just about the Democrats caving into the Administration (although it is that, too).

The Democrats' -- those who are advocating this compromise for corporations that voluntarily violated our civil rights -- are greedy for reelection and power, bought with corporate money. Greedy for sheer power, exercised without principle, no less than their Republican counterparts.

As Democrats, these corporate lackeys believe that they have immunity for craven acts. Their colleagues in the Senate and the American people, I trust, will show otherwise.

A solid plank in a Democratic candidate's platform would be to effort the removal of Reid, Pelosi, and the rest of the posers in the Congressional leadership.

If, by rule of law, it was a crime for the telcos to hand over the information... it was also a prosecutable crime for the government to receive it.

The Dems once again clear the way for Bush's escape.

"...that the companies had "acted in good faith" in cooperating with what they believed was a legal and presidentially authorized program and that they should not be punished through civil litigation for their roles, the official said."

Yo "official"... you don't get to decide that. That was the rule of law at the time. What you suggest as a "civil" matter is, first and foremost, a criminal matter.

Has anybody else had enough of revisionist law and justice?

Ignorance does not place one above the law.
The wire tapping started BEFORE 9/11.

America went to a great deal of trouble in World War 2 to defeat fascism. Hitler did not die in the Berlin bunker. He moved to Washington and Cheney sits in the bunker.

The President has no intention of doing what is right. Thus far the timidity among the Democrats on DC has shown them to be amoral at best. Wanting to do what is expedient (even when in trashes the Constitution) they roll over as did Gephart and Daschel in 2001. They are just as irrelevant as This President and to timid to see it!

I agree with you about being sickened by the Democratic lapdogs, but let's not forget that Gephart and Daschel had their offices anthraxed in the run-up to the "Patriot" Act being passed. I'm not so sure that having ones life threatened is "rolling over."

Makes you wonder who was actually behind the anthrax operation.

I think the CONSENSUS is that we need to see more activism and less politics from our Democratic politicians RIGHT NOW.

Americans are fed up with bullshit. No deals with the devil.

For example, the Dems could stop all work unless the President cooperates with legislation. VETO THE PRESIDENT.

No legislation until the White House is purged, or cooperates.

A political strike: I am sure America will support such activism.

Do we have this wrong? Has Bush not been spying on ordinary citizens but members of Congress? What does he have on these guys? Or are they scared? Maybe they remember that newspaper editor who infuriated the Bushies by publishing a photo of one the Bush twin drunk on the floor doing a little lesbo dance with a friend at a party, and then he received a letter full of Anthrax from the "terrrists" and died, or the Congressmen (all dems by the by) who got their own letters. Whatever it is, we need CHANGE.

Pelosi is so useless. Even in the majority, the dems can't get anything done except what the GOP allows them to do. This country is truly run of the money, by the money, for the money.

Please tell me it isn't so. Dems do it again.

Our liberties are getting screwed.

Would you vote for a presidential candidate that votes to grant legal immunity to telecoms that participated in the illegal surveillance of Americans?

Does anyone really think that Obama & hillary are going to be any different. Why is it that the ones who can raise the millions of dollars are the frontrunners. Its disgusting that good candidates like Chris Dodd are being overlooked because they are not in the pockets of the lobbyists & corporations. Chris Dodd is going to take a stand against this. Please check out his website. This man is intellectual, comes out with straight answers when asked a question and has integrity. IF WE ARE NO HAPPY WITH STATUS QUO WHY DO WE WANT HILLARY & OBAMA AND SOMEONE WHO PREACHES ABOUT 2 THE AMERICAS BUT GETS 400 HAIRCUTS. WHY DONT THEY GIVE THEIR MILLIONS TO HELP OUT POOR AMERICANS. WHY DON'T THEY GIVE UP THEIR HEALTH COVERAGE UNTIL ALL AMERCIANS HAVE HEALTH COVERAGE. TAKE A SERIOUS LOOK AT CHRISS DODD - HE IS THE MAN TO LEAD THIS COUNTRY

This latest act of cowardice shows that any American who contributes to the Democratic Party is just as bad as one who contributes to the Republicans. Fascism is on the march.

If our President will not respect our freedom;
and our government won't protect our rights and freedoms;
and if corporations will assume that whatever they do is OK;
and our security and intelligence services fail us
and if the people will not take to the streets,
who the f**k will look after America?

God? ..............................................Ha ha ha

F**king dolts

I just knew it! The Nader-herd would be out chanting and ranting again! NONE of them would so much as read what the news really is although the title of this post is misleading really
It is amazing how lazy and brainwashed this herd is!

Now on topic. It is a tentative agreement between the Senate committee and the Bush administration. It is a trade off for more FISA oversight and protection of Civil Liberties. It is a tentative agreement and restricted to the committee. The House Bill does not include any such immunity

Like I stated above, it's all negotiations right now, the title is misleading and fodder for more rants and moaning ...

SensibleAmerican, your staunch support of Hitlery and, your defencse of the Kyle-Lieberman amendment, which is one more step towards war with Iran are shameful.

You are a shill (paid or volunteer, who knows who cares?) for the DLC, strongly opposed to impeachment and to the progressives in the Democratic party.

Your sly deceitful lies always attempt (and fail) to explain or justify the support of the dirty criminal Bush, by the Democratic party.

As for your comment here, more lies.
Huffpo has a pattern of reporting on Democratic party sellouts of the American people. The pattern goes something like this.....

First. Large bold headlines proclaiming how tough Democrats are, and how they will do the right thing on a given issue. Talk is cheap.

Second. Smaller headlines giving us the bad news (of another sellout) in tiny bite size portions. This serving two purposes, one to soften us up and two to limit the avalanche of negative responses.

Third. The bad news of the actual sellout vote. This is accompanied by blogs from establishment Democrats explaining (spinning and lying) why the Dems let us down.
Usually a combination of; no votes boohoohoo... evil Republicans made us do it...mass media made us do it....and don't worry it's not that bad.

Of course the DLC trolls show up when they must and spin their lies.....hey that's where you come in SensibleAmerican isn't it.

So on this story, we had earlier this week Pelosi talking tough on FISA....part one.

Now we have a little spoonful of bad news to get us used to the idea with this story here and now....part two.

Some time in the next week we will have the actual vote (sellout of the American people) and of course it will be treated as a minor story by fluffpo to minimize the damage....part three.

And when all else fails. When the Democratic party sellout is so extreme, so disgusting that it simply cannot be spun........the Nader card. The last move of the DLC scoundrel. How sad.
