People:

Ellen DeGeneres, who has had a long and emotional week, decided to cut it short Thursday and canceled her taping for Friday's program.

As the “first pet” of the Clinton era, Socks, the White House cat, allowed “chilly” Hillary Clinton to show a caring, maternal side as well as bringing joy to her daughter Chelsea. So where is Socks today?

Once the presidency was over, there was no room for Socks anymore. After years of loyal service at the White House, the black and white cat was dumped on Betty Currie, Bill Clinton’s personal secretary, who also had an embarrassing clean-up role in the saga of his relationship with intern Monica Lewinsky.

Do we need to see this woman weep over a dog? Get a grip De Generes and get over yourself you're not that important, this whole mess says more about your mean spirited self than the two animal rescuers your are ruining, shame on you.

Oh well, as they say in show biz, The show must go on. If need be without Ellen.
Many thousands of others could do better.

I have a suspicion that Ellen's "breakdown" may have a bit more to it. Something tells me there is some other stuff going on in her life other than just the dog thing.
Shades of Anne Heche era

and if so I am sorry for her.
But in celebrity land, nothing is real.
She should take her money and go somewhere normal.

A signed contract/agreement is not an absolute. All contracts are subject to laws designed to protect consumers. There is also the issue of enforceability. This particular agreement is INSANE. I'd like to know how far the group goes, for example:

- if an owner has a child or becomes a step parent to children under 14 in years following the adoption are they required to return the animal?
- if an owner moves following the adoption are they required to notify Mutts and Moms and submit to a second home visit/inspection?
- if yes to the above, and if the move is to another city or state, are the owners responsible for paying the plane fare and expenses of the Mutts and Moms rep who completes the second inspection? Are they required to pony up for first-class or economy?

This group seems to have charitable status (i.e. they can issue tax receipts). I have a serious problem with any group with that status discriminating against a group (families with kids under 12). Do they have a similar prohibition against older people adopting? After all the life expectancy of someone in their 60s is not the same as someone in the 20s or 30s. Do you have to submit to a health exam before adopting to prove you will be around long enough to outlive the animal?

Futhermore, I am shocked that police officers can't seem to recognize a simple case of criminal trespass. The homeowners repeated asked the Mutts and Moms people to leave, when the M&M crazies refused they became trespassers. They should have been arrested.

Marina Batkis, the owner of Mutts and Moms, was interviewed and she clearly explained the "no under 14" rule. It has to do with preventing these animals from getting a "bite record." Meaning that if they bit a child, it would be a mark on their adoption record, which would prevent them from being placed in the future.

Many of these dogs have been neglected, abused and abandoned and children are more likely to rile them or overexcite them into a defensive position. It's not unreasonable to assume that Mutts and Moms may be placing dogs in adults-only homes. The point is that a business can decide how to operate regardless of public opinion. As was said many times, if Ellen did not like the fine print, she could have adopted elsewhere. The fact remains that she did not read that fine print.

BTW, there is no criminal trespass if the dog's chip is registered under Mutts and Moms. They are merely taking a property that belongs to them. I'm sorry if it upsets you animal lovers, but as of U.S. law today, an animal is property. No amount of emotion is going to change that fact. You either work around the system or change it. Until then, this is what we have. Hyperbole detracts from the debate.

Oh and something else, the reason why there is no proviso against a couple having children in the future is that by this time, an adopted dog has acclimated into the household effectively (I know this from personal experience). Anyone who has gone through this exact life process understand this from common sense. The "no under 14" proviso is for the application process only. To suggest anything untoward beyond that is just being obtuse.

Now when people lose control of their emotions and tears start flowing, it will be known as "pulling an Ellen."

I dunno. Darfur, Iraq, THOSE are things worth breaking down about. This all seems like a convenient trigger for something else. I'm not equating it with Nixon's 'Checkers' speech, but it's an awful lot of millionaire brou-ha-ha over a stray mutt. When Bill O'Reilly weighs in, you know time is a-wastin'.

again, you can care about more than one thing. Just because she cared about the dog, doesn't mean she doesn't care about Iraq, and Darfur. Some people have the capacity to care about and help many causes at one time. I think she has a big heart, and it might have been better, if she cancelled the show before she got so upset on the air, but I won't fault her for loving animals.

It is like the protesters in Santa Monica ,Ca who threatened to chain themselves up and go on a hunger strike because the city was going to cut down some ficus trees a few weeks ago. I kid you not. If we could get this emotional about young men and women dying daily in Iraq.

Perhaps we could chain some neocons to a tank bound for Iraq.
It would at least be fun watching them chewing their limbs off trying to escape.

A bad month for women in broadcasting.
Aside from Ellen's irrational meltdown, we had the maudlin spectacle of Yankees announcer Suzyn Waldman sobbing on-air after the Yanks choked, again, in the playoffs and the ax dangled precariously over Joe Torre's head.
An odd coincidence that the old "hysterical female" stereotype would be reinforced by two women who are considered by many to be feminist trailblazers.

So the issue is crying?
If men make an emotional display - as they regularly do - no one says boo. So it's not the "emotional" display, it's plain old mysogyny.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 07:09 PM on 10/19/2007

Do you really think if Tim McCarver broke down sobbing during his post-game wrap-up no one would say boo? Or if Larry King was on the air wailing uncontrollably over his puppy it would pass without comment? This kind of on-air emotional meltdown would have legs in the press without regard to gender. (They sure said boo to Jack Paar when he lost it on camera.) The difference is that when a man weeps publicly, the commentators say he's breaking down a male stereotype. When a woman does it, she's said to be reinforcing a female stereotype.

Yep she's having a breakdown. I said so yesterday when I saw the clip on Countdown.
I wish her well. Like it or not the show is about entertainment. The crying has made people uncomfortable. shes going to lose her show. When a line gets crossed theres no coming back.

ARE you CRAZY when u love a dog and get attached to it, it becames a part of you

The dog's adopted to another family, and probably just as happy as it was yesterday. People get total pet psychosis in this infantile society. Get another doggie. There's only about a 100,000 euthanized in a city like L.A. every year, thanks to loving-families-that-are-so-attached to their pets.

Dogs are OK, but they're not even real animals, they're genetically mutated boot licking machines, designed to give 'love' to whoever feeds them, regardless of how useless and worthless that person is. They're the perfect, convenient validation for dysfunctional individuals. Hence their popularity, and booming population, which doubles about every 5 to 10 years.
