The Crystal Coast Republican Men's Club faithful were all smiles as they gathered at a restaurant to listen to their candidate for North Carolina's 3rd Congressional District.

But the warm reception wasn't for the Republican who since 1995 has represented this stretch of coast from the Virginia state line to the sprawling Marine base at Camp Lejeune. Rep. Walter B. Jones Jr., a soft-spoken, deeply religious man who two years ago turned against the Iraq war, was not there.

One could hope for bi-partisanship on the issue of Bush's war, but it looks like the only way to end it is to elect as many Democrats and Independents as possible.

It looks like there is a sizeable minority in this country that vehemently believes the lies coming from the right wing, and that is very scary.

You are so right mamacat . . . voting GOP means war war war and religious right wing evangelicals . . . = hypocrisy and greed and unConstitutional behaviour

Although I agree we can't vote Republican, all 3 Democratic frontrunners have refused to commit to pulling out of by 2013. (2013??????????) The Dems in the Senate voted 94-1 and 92-3 respectively for the full defense authorization bill that included Bush's Iraq budget with no restrictions. The number 1 Dem frontrunner voted to give Bush the authority to invade Iraq and now to give credence to Bush taking military action against Iran.

What makes anyone think that voting in Dems will result in the end of the war. They have not said this.

People want this over so badly they delude themselves about the prospects of ending the war if the Dems win. If Richardson, Kucinich or Gravel don't get the Democratic Presidential nomination, the war will continue.

I won't vote for anyone from either party who does not commit, up front, to pulling out all of the troops and contractors from Iraq within 6 months of being elected. And I won't be Nader-baited about it either. Voting for Hillary, Obama or Edwards means you have blood on your hands. I am not willing to be the modern-day equivalent of the "good German" from WWII. And there are huge numbers of people like me, who don't want blood dripping from their lips by voting for one of two pro-war candidates in the next election -- a Bushie Republican or a Bushocrat.

NO ONE should vote for ANY candidate that wants to continue this war! The so-called "frontrunners" really aren't the most popular among VOTERS. It's the press and their corporate controllers that are pushing the Guliani, McCain, Thompson, Clinton, etc. war supporters. Look at the other candidates. Thank God we have other chioces, now vote for anti-war candidates. This war is about oil and the profits that are being made from it by all the contractors involved. AEI & PNAC and CFR are responsible for this war. They have been pushing for it since 1998!! Way before 9/11 happened. 9/11 was the "Shock & Awe" needed to pursuade the American people to start the wars. Instead of supporting the war, the so-called religious right should be supporting the investigation of Bush/Cheney's war crimes and lies. Remember - "Thou Shalt Not Kill" The GOPers are just hypocrites!

I wonder how many of the GOP party faithful have stock in Haliburton, Black Water, or one (or more) of those hundreds of private contractors in Iraq who are gouging the taxpayers through every unscrupulous accounting practice known to man. I bet some of them could recite without a moment's hesitation how much money they would lose if the war were to end. Nothing stokes up a pro-war sentiment like money.

There is no way Jesus would be a Republican. Most likely he would hang with the Green Party folks and be called a dirty f-ing hippie by the Repubs.

Don't worry about Anti-War Republicans...

Everyone had better start worrying about all the Pro-War Democratic Part members, you know the "Wolves in sheeps clothing."

Why Republican?

With the economic pyramid greatly favoring the formation of Democrats, how is it possible to have such close elections?

Here's what 57 years of American living has taught me:

People who are Republicans can be or believe any or all of the following:

1. Wealthy.

2. Believe that we can all be wealthy if we just work hard and smart enough and by ignoring the shape of the economic pyramid, luck, nepotism and 'old boy's clubs'.

3. Incorrectly believe that abortion is murder and must therefore make it a political priority.

4. Love their guns and generally own more than one.

5. Incorrectly believe that homsexuality is a 'lifestyle choice'.

6. Will never vote "in that nigger lovin' Democrat party".

7. Just plain like the macho sound of the word, "conservative". The word "liberal" reminds them of someone prancing around barefoot in a field tossing daisies.

8. Are not very bright or recieve there information from very limited sources such as Fox news.

9. Most likely to have never read more than 10 non-school assigned books in their lives. Porn not counting, that is.

Have I missed any?

Why Liberal?

1. Create a federal tax system that drains wealth from the middle class and funnels it to the Military Industrial Complex to perpetuate endless war. Liberal thinking is the engine of war and oppression. Liberals hand power away to the most evil among us.

2. The allow federal control of the education system that has turned our students from the first to the last in the world.

3. To create a welfare scam that has taken poor neighborhoods an transformed them into war zones. This welfare scam promotes destruction of the nuclear family.

4. Promote Federal deficit spending for social programs like Medicare and Social Security, both of which are bankrupt. Liberals completely ignore reality in terms of the coming collapse of the American economy. They completely ignore the present collapse of the dollar due to their deficit spending.

5. The centralize power and wealth by promoting centralized control of everything. Since the corporations and power elite run the federal government, liberals fight to empower the most privileged among us.

6. Promote promiscuous lifestyles that spread disease and degenerate our children.

7. Promote the idea that people, like GW Bush who is regularly visited by a gay porn star, can not has diverse sexual fetishes involving both heterosexual and homosexual components and that environmental influence is a component in these behaviors.

8. While a fascist regime is rising before your eyes, to continue call for more federal power and to fight against those like Ron Paul who are attempting to kill the Military Industrial Complex and bring troops from all over the world home now.

9. To hand your control of health care over to the corporations behind the government so they can have total control over the population.

10. While a fascist regime is rising in America to support a candidate that has done nothing but support the fascists.

11. While a fascists regime is rising in America, to do everything possible to disarm honest American even though 200 million people have been murdered by government in the 20th century.

On and on...

Could someone help me out please? I'm having a hard time figuring out if this guy is "having me on" or not.

Can anyone figure out if he is pro-liberal (and just using the wrong term in his descriptives) or against liberals. I mean, I'm reading his post (as best I can, due to his literacy issues) and I'm thinking "he's describing conservatives to a "T", and then he says "liberal" and I think "surely that was just a mistake. But he does it repeatedly!

No one could really be this detached from reality, could they?

Well, assuming one of the top 3 on Dem side gets the nomination, antiwar Republicans won't be tempted to support someone who refuses to commit to leaving Iraq by the end of their first term, and won't take a nuclear strike against Iran off the table. Let's not pretend the antiwar vote is going to go to a feckless party that keeps handing more money and power to Bush to continue the travesty: the only thing lower than Bush's approval rating is Congress'.

What antiwar Republicans will probably do if Paul doesn't get the Republican nomination is vote for Ron Paul again in the general election (a Libertarian Party nomination would give him easy ballot status in nearly every state and a trivial effort to get the rest).

The Democratic party is, justifiably, starting to lose the antiwar movement, and the assumption that a third candidate will give the election to the Democrats is an arrogant presumption from party leaders who think true antiwar voters have no choice but to support them, regardless of how little they do to stop the war.

I don't think Ron Paul will run on a 3rd party ticket. But if he did, I could see your scenario happening. That would, of course, make it much more likely that a Republican would become President. Nader showed that you don't have to pull a huge percentage to make a difference in swing states. I don't think it will happen, but if it does, we may well be screwed because a Republican win would mean another four years of the destruction of our country.

I remember hearing that Rep. Walter Jones, from a very pro-military district, had decided the war should come to an honorable end. He does actually come from a district with active and retired military. He writes his own condolence letters, and personalizes them, and he has been a very thoughtful, dignified man in his process and evolution to this position. It is truly unfortunate, but perhaps he should consider switching. He is a fiscal conservative, and there are the House Congressional Blue Dogs, who are also fiscal conservatives.
I do not know if he is personally a veteran, but it doesn't matter to me ... he's a respectful person, and if he has made this change to the anti-Iraq-War side, people ought to leave him alone. That's what elections are for, and frankly, he has a right to his opinion.
For those of us who not only were alive during Vietnam, but, as I did, who went to Vietnam and are now combat infantry disabled purple heart veterans, who are also former gunghos and changed to oppose the war during our active duty ... we know what many of you too young to know, know ... that those who feel we should have bombed Vietnam into a parking lot ... we did that.
Modern war, compared to WW II, where 100,000 Japanese died in one fire bomb raid over Tokyo in ONE NIGHT, is not necessary. The bombs we dropped on Vietnam were greater than WW II. We bombed the entire SE Asian area into craters on the moon. That kind of "bomb them to dust" strategy will confirm to the rest of the world how cruel we can be, if that's the only answer to failure in Iraq.

For years, the Bush clique has tossed the label "unAmerican" at anyone who questions their ill-begotten travesty we now call the Iraq quagmire. Can you conceive of anything more un-American than the humongous mess George Bush has created by his reckless disregard for history, common sense, world opinion, American lives and treasury? Old Russian proverb: A country without a czar is like a village without an idiot. We have ours in spades. One which appears to be immune from censure, criticism, impeachment or blame for his nonstop blundering. A man who cannot speak intelligently without a TelePrompTer or a prepared script, who cannot be dislodged from his redoubt by any legal means as he holds the country and the world hostage to an incredible record of incompetence. And this is the country which is exporting democracy at gunpoint anywhere on the globe it deems necessary?

Bush certainly would not label Hillary Clinton un-American. She is ready to nuke Iran for Israel and has not opposed Bush or Defended the Constitution in any meaningful way.

According to Bush, Hillary is a great American.
