Washington Post:

President Bush announced Monday in Washington that he will ask Congress to approve a $500 million package to help Mexico fight drug cartels, the largest international anti-drug effort by the United States in nearly a decade.

The proposal could represent a seismic shift in relations between the two countries, whose law enforcement agencies and policymakers have often bickered over the drug war, as well as other hugely contentious issues such as immigration reform and trade.

A new front in a losing war, this is about the CIA getting the control instead of the drug lords. Drug laws are wrong especially when it comes to pot.

Hm.

Another project that Bush was hired to "execute" without any idea of what he was doing. Let's see:

* Iraq Payback to Saddam for trying to kill my Daddy...
* Iraq Takeover for my Oil Buds...
* Constitution rewrite for my PNAC supporters...
* Blending of State with Church for my AIPAC friends...
* Cancelling the Departments of Education, Interior, Labor, HHS, and anything that spends MY TAX MONEY... arrggghhhllslslss (spits)

So much payback, so little patriotism = G. W. Bush

Ugh.

It is time we gave up the war on drugs. It is expensive, it is not working and it has created a new criminal class just as Prohibition did in the thirties (?) . Millions of Americans are needlessly in jail who would otherwise be leading reasonably productive lives.

It is high time we legalised recreational drugs. The street price would drop precipitously, theft would decline and criminals would be put out of business. Our police forces could then concentrate more effectively on real crime. It would be up to individuals to decide whether they want to do drugs or not. The fact of the matter is that the laws do not prevent drug use and people do die of overdoses. If these drugs are legal they may lose some of their appeal.

The only people who will really raucously object are the pharmaceutical companies, who would see their sales of tranquillizers etc decline.

When he asks, Congress should deliver a great big oversized joint painted with 1-finger salutes on a flatbed trailer to the WH.

I say the the next "surge" george gets is one that taxes rich americans to pay for his war-mongering, and for poor kids to get health insurance. Once that's done, call me back, and we can talk.

Locally, a car with three Hispanics was stopped. It ended up being three illegals carrying about $500,000 in illegal drugs. Until we close the borders, pouring money into a "war on drugs" is like feeding oats to a dead horse. Bush is wasting trillions on wars. Obviously, he has no idea what he's doing. We need new leadership, new minds, new direction.

Well, outside of incompetence and corruption, I would say that this is where the majority of the customers for those products reside.

Both the Democratic and Republican party have supported the worthless war on some drugs.

It didn't work for the other drug, alcohol and it sure won't work on the others.

Of course he wants another war...he would just be continuing his Fathers other war.

Do you remember Iran Contra? Daddy had his people saying "not to my recollection"..the dumb son has them stating "I don't recall".

Take a moment and watch these vintage trails, newcasts, and interviews of the Iran/Contra scandal. You'll see why..the dumb son wants to continue his pappas "other war".

Drug cartels own Mexico.

They own all the governments, federal to local. They make more money in a year than the entire GDP of Mexico. They own the military, the airlines, hospitals, banks, churches. This "aid package" Bush wants to send to Mexico will wind up in their hands.

It is the elite, the oligarchy, the ruling families of Mexico who have lunch with the Bushes and play golf with them, who will benefit. The ruling families and the cartels are complicit in this enterprise.

It isn't the poor people with a kilo in a backpack bringing in all the drugs. They come over on private jets, tons of coke at a time. They are helped by government officials on both sides of the border.

As they continue to push us toward a NAFTA super-highway, and the Amero, we are supposed to believe that our partner to the south is a first-world country. It is not. Over 80 million people are in poverty there, living in a virtually lawless state.

The tide of drugs from Mexico and South America can not be stopped. If it did, the economy of Mexico and the United States would flounder and fall into a deep depression.

This is just politically inspired action, to appeal to a conservative base that has no idea what is really going on in the world.

Wow! Your description of the drug cartels' controls in Mexico sounds a lot like what the pharmaceutical companies are doing in the U.S. Our companies are getting the best political support money can buy. But the oil, war, and telecommunications companies aren't doing too badly with our elected (actually 'their') elected officials either.
