Washington Post:

President Bush announced Monday in Washington that he will ask Congress to approve a $500 million package to help Mexico fight drug cartels, the largest international anti-drug effort by the United States in nearly a decade.

The proposal could represent a seismic shift in relations between the two countries, whose law enforcement agencies and policymakers have often bickered over the drug war, as well as other hugely contentious issues such as immigration reform and trade.

I can tell you how to stop the drug cartels in their tracks: Legalize all drugs now, control and tax the distribution of them and use the proceeds of the tax to set up treatment programs for people not strong enough to leave them alone on their own.

We've spent far too much of our nations wealth fighting this losing war for far too long. The Cartels get stronger and wealthier, our prisons bulge with nonviolent pot smokers while we release pedophiles to make room for them and we destabilize foreign governments all in pursuit of prohibition. Did we learn nothing from the first go round with prohibition? Apparently not. As a wise man said, those who don't remember the past are doomed to repeat it.
What we need are politicians with balls to tell the truth. They won't because the sole test of success is election and then re-election. We used to shoot cowards, now we send them to govern us.

2000 - Afghanistan produced 2% of the world's poppies.

2006 - Afghanistan produced 92% of the world's poppies.

Thomas Shannon, on the subject of training soldiers who then turn around and use the training and arms against you, "We can't allow ourselves to be dominated by fear about what might happen."
Sounds good to me. Look how well it worked in Iraq.

Then Bush can lose three wars at once instead of just two. I'd support a War on any New Wars

Unfortunately, the one war bush is winning is against the citizens of the United States.

Surge in drugs? Oh great now the competition gets stiffer. O.K. then here we go: this week only I can do bundles of Pirate for $180, kilo of B.C. green for $1600, generic black hash for $400 a 1/4, and 8's of 90% blow for $250. Beat that. This war on competition is killing me.

The truth is George Bush and the C.I.A. are not content with the the trillions of dollars he is making from selling his Afghanistan heroin he now wants money from Americans that won't buy his filthy stinking drugs. now he ( by pretending to the easily gullible he won't just take the money and give it to the same "agents" that sell and fly the crap all over the world ) can make more money both for and againstdrugs. Wow what a genus and "ecilecktic" (to use his own word) melon of a big decider drug pusher brain he has. Let's all Give him a surprise drug test and see what's really in there.

Just say NO to one more penny for the so called war on drugs. How much more evidence does it take to realize it has been a utter failure and counterproductive to every value that the USA is supposed to stand for? Will congress cave in to Bush once again? Does he always get his way...even on such an obviously failed policy? wow. Im depressed.

Just like his father did, to fund Iran/Contra.

Afghanistan had a bumper opium crop this year.

It is time to declare an end to the war on drugs.

The article says the problem is violence in Mexico between cartels that spills across the border.

Rather than throw money and manpower at the problem, why not just end it. Take away the illegality of drugs and thier prices will plummet.

This is one area where conservatives and liberals can work together.

Quite so. Well, Ron Paul is against this
endless and stupid "War on Drugs" just as he would end Bush's stupid and endless "War on Terror".
He was booed in Florida. So much for ending wars. By the way, whatever happened to the "War on Poverty"?

We should end that war as well. All we have done is create more poverty.

In fact, we shouldn't declare wars on our social problems.

What happened to the "War on Poverty"? Hadn't you heard...we won! There are no more poor people. All it took was a few thousand tons of bombs and a few napalm strikes, and poof...no more poor people. Praise the Lord!

Non of y'all understand. You see, we've got to fight the drugs there, so we don't have to fight them here.

As always, President Bush could not be more right on this issue and more in tune with the priorities of all true Americans.

An additional $500 million spent on the war on drugs is exactly the kind of spending we should be doing right now. Instead of wasting this money on stupid programs like health care for children or stopping fires from destroying homes of America-haters, this money can and must be spent on programs that truly matter - like the war on drugs.

Make no mistake - spending money on the war on drugs decreases the number of kids on drugs and lessens the impact of drugs on society. Every dollar spent in this war has been spent wisely just as every dollar spent by President Bush on everything has reaped great rewards.

Do not listen to the evil tax and spend liberals on this or any other issue. They don't know how to spend your money whereas if we all don't allow President Bush to spend all our money on whatever he wants we will all die. The choice is simple. We spend money on loser programs and end up as losers or we spend money on winning programs and end up like super winners like the ultimate super winner - President Bush.
