Drew Carey's "Price" Goes Up 10 Percent In Ratings

About a 10 percent ratings bump.

Drew Carey's debut week hosting CBS' classic game show "The Price Is Right" resulted in slightly better numbers than last year with Bob Barker at the microphone.

"Price" averaged 5.4 million viewers for the week of Oct. 15-21, matching the "Price" average from Oct. 16-22 in 2006. Among adults 18 to 49, Carey garnered a modest bump--up 10 percent to a 1.1. For daytime shows, networks typically target women 25 to 54, which also saw a slight increase for Carey--up 7 percent to a 1.6 rating.

Oh please, his first show was awful, worse than I ever imagined it could be. He was stiff, nervous, didn't know how to ad-lib with the contestants, terrified of getting something wrong. Bob Barker on his worst day was never that bad.

And those of you who thinking hosting TPIR is easy, guess again. You have to have a complete mastery of every detail of every game, and be able to be smooth and charming no matter what unpredictable events take place.

Bob Barker fooled everybody by making it look easy, but now the truth is revealed. Possibly Drew will improve, but it's going to take a long time.

There's a knock on Drew that he walk out on shows from time to time. A game show with an absurdly simple format, contestants & a live studio audience given to excessive enthusiasm when a prize is announced & the contestants compete in the same silly, debasing, childish, dull contests day after day could bore any host after two years or less. Since Drew has a reputation for being talented-he can't be faulted for walking-right into a new exciting, well paid gig as soon as he can. The man may have a wit & will want to prove it. I mean-a day time game show like the Price is Rife has to be close to the nadir of boring TV.

I am happy for Drew Carey. In addition to being funny, he is also a genuinely nice person.
