At a campaign stop in South Carolina Wednesday, Fred Thompson said that the Iraqi insurgency is made up of "a bunch of kids with improvised explosive devices," and suggested that the appearance of losing to such an enemy would harm U.S. national security.

Thompson was confronted about Iraq by a Bluffton resident named Bernhard Steinhouse, who asked Thompson whether he would bring back U.S. forces from the country.

Seriously...I can't believe this comment. It's insulting to the intelligence of the people.

BUT, do you think this statement reflects Fred Thompson's laid-back, cool communication style...or is it more a reflection of his ignorance of the issues?

Fred Thompson, yet another right-wing coward who spent his youth hiding from military service.

It makes me sick when cowards, like george w. bush, dick Cheney and fred thompson talk about the nobility of this stinking war. They are all cowards, liars and hypocrites.

Princep, the Bosnian Serb who assassinated Archduke Ferdinand and his wife in Sarajevo, led to the start of WW1 was a kid led by deranged adults.

General Tommy Franks calls them "angry young men." Send Ann Coulter to any college in America and you'll see the same type of anger, but our kids don't have their own AK-47's and suicide vests.

Thanks Mr. Thompson. I am sure the families of our brave military will be glad to hear their sons and daughters were killed by some crazy kids.

Thompson's not entirely wrong here. World War I and II, Korea and Viet Nam were all fought by "kids". I remember hearing it often, "our kids are fighting and dieing in Viet Nam." A standard adage about war is "old men sending young men to fight." These are 18-21 year olds for the most part doing the fighting and dieing in Iraq, on all sides. To me, at my age, they are kids. Hell, at Thompson's age even his wife is a "kid."

Thompson speaks as if he has just emerged from a very long self-imposed historical amnesia, still making references to the Soviet Union. "A bunch of kids?" Well, a bunch of kids have succeeded in defining the template of American foreign policy! What a sophomoric neophyte!

Thompson, in every way, is irrelevant. The only relevant presidential candidates are Clinton and Guiliani.

"Saddam lured everybody into believing he had weapons of mass destruction, which he had had previously, no question about it, he had used them against his own people," Thompson said.

I saw an interview with Saddam just before we invaded and he was asked point blank whether he had them or not. His answer was "No". And pointed to the U.N. inspectors, who had found no evidence and the fact that they had unrestricted access in the country, as proof.

Of course it could have been a lie (now proven to have been the truth) but clearly to Fred, "No" means "Yes". I wonder if he used the same philosophy as a teenager on dates.

He may have used it on his current teen-aged wife.

There was absolutely no reason to believe a word Saddam Hussein ever said. But that's like saying OJ said he didn't kill Nicole and Ron so he didn't.
(Bear with me here):;
There are other ways to figure things out, and no one did that. In the OJ case, everyone focused on the DNA - complex, easily claimed to be contaminated, etc.

No one thought about the testimony of the limo driver, that when he picked OJ up that night, he saw a man walking into the house from the other driveway entrance (by where the Bronco was parked).

After OJ came back out of the house, he called Kato from the limo to tell him he'd forgotten to set the alarm and asked him to do so.

If someone else was in the house (the mystery man crossing the driveway to go into the house), why would Simpson have Kato set the alarm? There either HAD to be someone else in that house or the man going into the house was Simpson. THAT is what convinced me, evidencewise, that he'd done it, and it's impossible to refute.

So, as with Hussein, if he had all that WMD, why was he not using it on Israel? Why was he merely paying reward money to Palestinian families? And if people say it's because Israel would have nuked Iraq, how can we then say he was a threat to the US?

Again, the argument makes no sense. Even if he had some WMD left, he was not a threat to the US.

Of course, the WMD thing was just the marketing tool meant to scare and dupe Americans.

Sadly, it worked.

I appreciate the point you're trying to make Thalia but my comment wasn't that I believed Saddam to be truthful, as stated:
"Of course it could have been a lie (now proven to have been the truth)"
My point was Saddam was not luring everyone into believing that he had WMD's as Fred said. Fred was either lying or else everytime someone says "No", Fred actually hears "Yes".
It was more of a dig on Fred's blatent dishonesty. Your point is valid, though. I do agree.

Alexander the Great began to conquer East Asia at age 14.

The average Iraqi is age 15.

Many insurgents are Iraqi ex-army but you had better believe their little brothers are helping.

The insurgency is just a bunch of kids.

And I thought they were a threat to the safety of our troops! Whew!

Well, if that's the case, let's just let their parents keep them under their control and bring our troops home.
