I Like ItI Don’t Like It

In early September, at a party in Washington D.C., author Sally Bedell Smith was approached by Terry McAuliffe, chairman of Sen. Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign, about her new book "For Love of Politics -- Bill and Hillary Clinton: The White House Years."

The conversation was, at first, coy. McAuliffe had been interviewed for the project - an intensely detailed look at the Clinton's marriage and political partnership - and was curious about the book's contents. According to both, the talk shifted to how the Clintons would react to what Smith had reported. Then accounts of what happened diverge.

2007-10-26-mccjoip.jpgAccording to Smith, the former Democratic National Committee chairman unexpectedly blurted out: "[Bill Clinton] has read the book, and he told me it is devastating about him."

It was, for the author, a troubling admission. Virtually no one at that point had seen "For Love of Politics." The book was not slated for release for nearly two months.

"I was trying to prevent my jaw from dropping to the floor," Smith told the Huffington Post. "Only 20 galleys had been printed and everyone who received a copy had signed a confidentiality agreement... The worry is that it's only early September, and the Clinton camp now has a lot of time to develop a plan to undermine the book in some way."

In an interview with the Huffington Post, McAuliffe denied that President Clinton had ever seen or been disappointed with the book. "There had been rumors on this book and the president had heard it was a hit piece on him," the former DNC chairman recalled. "But she's crazy. The book wasn't even out yet."

Nevertheless, the morning after their encounter, Smith shot an email to Random House asking it to look into the matter. The publisher confirmed that officials investigated a possible leak but could not find the source.

For Smith, the episode fit the Clintons' reputation for being hands-on and, at times, overtly tactical in their dealings with the press. A month ago, The Politico reported that Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign had effectively killed an unfavorable GQ story by threatening to limit the magazine's access to the former president.

"That was of course the first thing that occurred to me," said Smith, whose work took more than 160 interviews and three years to complete, "I know enough about how they operate to know that they're pretty sophisticated and machine-like and they find hidden ways of going after people where they don't leave any fingerprints. And it is a trademark technique of Hillary."

When "For Love of Politics" finally hit stands on October 23, Sen. Clinton's presidential campaign mostly ignored its publication.

Smith is not the first Clinton biographer to suggest that the Clintons maneuvered behind the scenes to dull the effect of an upcoming book. Earlier this year, both Carl Bernstein's "A Woman in Charge" and "Her Way," by Jeff Gerth and Don Van Natta Jr., were leaked well in advance of their publication dates - one for an article by the Washington Post on a Friday before a holiday weekend.

"The Clinton machine did obtain an unauthorized copy of the book," Gerth told the Huffington Post via email. In addition, he said, "One campaign aide wrote a letter to the publisher (before the book was published) asking for a correction, based on a footnote in a review draft. The footnote had already been corrected (before the letter arrived and before the book was published). So her letter was moot."

McAuliffe dismissed the notion that the former president and his wife worked to preempt the book's impact, describing his conversation with Smith as merely "conjecture" about her writing.

As for what made President Clinton "devastated" about "For Love of Politics," Smith could only guess. More than 35 people were interviewed for the book under confidentiality, many of them on personal matters, she noted. The work also looked at several private papers and journals from the Clinton White House as well as notes from former Sen. Daniel Patrick Moynihan, D-NY, regarding the health care and impeachment battles that marked Clinton's first and second terms respective.

"[McAuliffe] didn't give me any indication.... I was kind of stunned," said Smith. "Terry is a bit of a talker and sometimes his mouth outruns his brain. I was taken aback that he would tell me that, and I couldn't figure out why. Was he trying to intimidate me? I couldn't figure it out."

Nothing but useless, empty blather from both sides of this thread. No substance whatsoever. Not even any speculation of what a Clinton presidency would mean for America. Just knee-jerking from the Clinton lovers and haters alike.

The information is out there. Look at how she votes, what she talks about, who comprises her circle of advisors, where she gets her support, and why people are for or against her.

Personally, I question the logic of Democrats favoring electability over principle in an election cycle where the Republicans are weaker than they've been since 1933. If the Democrats can't nominate a real progressive in this political climate, then we'll never be able to stem the tide of fascism.

Yes, Hillary is better than Giuliani. But if that's the choice, then it's game over for the United States as a Democratic Republic and the death of the post-Renaissance liberalism on which this nation was founded. If you honestly believe that logical next step in the evolution of human civilization is a return to feudalism, then by all means, nominate Hillary Clinton.

the Clintons are as secretive as the Bush and Cheney white house. notice how they have all the papers locked up tight.
they are just like their best buddies the Bush's. They probably trade tactics and hillary most likely has promised bush to continue his bloody war in exchange for help in stealing the nomination and eventual election.
And I am a democrat. but, like all progressives I cannot stand nor do I trust her majesty.

Another Clinton Biographer Decries "Clinton Machine"...

Where do we sign up to decry yet another Clinton biographer decrying the "Clinton Machine"? We can start with Bernstein and work our way down the pandering food chain of authors.

All you bashers like it much better when the slimers' targets just lay down on the center yellow line and let the halftracks roll over them...

Repeatedly turning the other cheek produces whiplash.

They killed the GQ article, that is an unassailable fact. So do you Hillary supporters think that was the first time the Clinton machine has tried to run over a journalist or author for printing something not only truthful but damaging? If so, then you're just plain ignorant. If you think it's just one of many times they pulled this kind of stunt then you have to question why you support her. There's a track record here people. Kill the messenger and in the meantime lock up all the papers from the archives and libraries. Doesn't the fact that Hillary has locked up her papers from her years as first lady scare you just a bit? What's she hiding? Where are her 1040 from last year? Where are her earmarks? Obama and Edwards have disclosed all their records. What is she hiding? We'll never know because the MSM has already chosen their Dem nominee.

Why start now? Americans have never wanted to deal with facts, just impressions that reinforce their personal bias toward their whole existence.

Doesn't the possibility exist that the whole thing could just be a stunt to boost book sales?

Someone says someone says and someone is DEVASTATED! DEVASTATED I TELL YOU! Don't you want to read the book that Bill was DEVASTATED ABOUT!

Right now there have been so many biographies covering the same turf over and over that a little 'ooh have you heard, this one has Bill DEVASTATED' is not surprizing. Bear in mind that the Clinton camp mostly ignored the book and it has tanked in sales. Like maybe there wasn't really anything new to it after all.

That being said the Clintons are at the head of a formidable fundraising network and political organization. That is without question.

You don't know what fun it is to read over and over ad nauseum...that the MEDIA HAS SELECTED HILLARY...THAT THE FIX IS IN...YADA YADA YADA

Her numbers are so high, something has to be blamed, right? You Hillary bashers can't stand the facts, so you made up a giant MSM consipracy. It's so laughable, it should have a spot on Comedy Central.

Every day there's a hit piece on Hillary, but somehow her numbers go up. Why, you ask? Simply because she's the best of the lot.

The MSM conspiracy...the MSM knifed the Clintons at every opportunity for the entire time he was running, and then for the entire 8 years of his presidency.

In spite of a hostile congress, he managed to balance the budget, help the cause of peace around the world and leave office with a rating in the mid 60's.

More of the same? HELL YES!

Rice taps Clinton, Carter for Middle East advice By Sue Pleming
1 hour, 33 minutes ago

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Anxious not to repeat mistakes of past Middle East peace-making, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has turned to former presidents Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter for tips ahead of her own conference this year
Rice invited Carter, a vocal critic of Bush administration policies, to the State Department on Wednesday where the two discussed his Arab-Israeli peacemaking efforts in the 1970s, State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said on Friday.http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20071026/ts_nm/mideast_rice_advice_dc;_ylt=Akfcbu0B.RIAWX2elY5Kj.ms0NUE

Mac2 that is for damn sure, Dynaties are not the way for a country to be governed. Our country has had enough of them.
If, we Americans continue to let this happen to our country, it is only the fault of the people for for having allowed these two dynasties to destroy it.
I for one will not vote for her. I am an Independent and if the Dem. candidate that I support fails to get the nominee, I shall then vote Republican, in hopess to help break this destructive, dynasty cycly.Bush, Clinton, Bush, Clinton, not for me.

Hillary Clinton is running against the truth. She will hide it, distort it, invent it, and attack it will all her corporate-funded might.

The press is co-opted on Hillary the way they have been co-opted on George W. Bush. Hillary will be president IF she can defeat the truth. It will be an interesting battle.

Yawn, another 'dish' biographer conveniently recalls a single incident as proof that somehow the Clintons tried to quash her blockbuster. And the quoted person denies ever having said such a thing. Gee, dyah think it might have something to do with pubicity? With fluffing up the importance of her 'biography?'

She's just Bushco lite. Yeah. Sure. Whatever.

Please explain to me how the Clintons are "leaches that live off the hard working American People."

The Clintons came into the White House with no money and left with virtually no money. They made their money after leaving the White House by writing books and accepting speaking engagements.

So how is that living off the american people?

Another in the long list of biographers who are published because they have some negative things to say about the Clintons. First it was the Jeff Gerth book, then the terminally-compromised, money-hungry Bernstein, the deranged right-wingers like Ms. Buchanan, raving about Hillary as though she dances naked with her coven every night -- none of it's working, folks. In fact, the story in the NY Times most recently aims curses at Hillary and her team for being... organized. After the Times, and the wingers, ridiculed Bill for being... disorganized. Gee, where have I seen that before: man disorganized, wife organized? Answer: almost everywhere! (Sometimes, of course, it's the opposite. But almost nowhere do you see couples who are both organized: there's reasons for that: two organized people argue all the damn time.)

After all this, look at the Hillary site. Think back to what she's done and said for the last month, or three months. It's a well-oiled machine. I got no problem with it. In fact, one of the things that's hurting Obama the most is that his campaign organization stinks. So instead of his supporters going nuts and acting like the right-wingers of the '90s, go and rewatch that documentary the Maysles made about the Clinton campaign in '92, to see how to run a campaign.

Yup, a well-oiled machine is exactly what we need to pound more nails into the GOP coffin.

She's competent. Her husband was/is competent. That's a negative?

Hillary has been annointed by the MSM and the Wall Street crowd as the next President. She still has an important primary test coming up in Iowa where folks don't necessarily vote for the wealthiest or most powerful. She is slick, and she is good on the stage. I am the first to admit it. But she is neither principled nor innovative. She is all about power. And she has captured many women who are tired of taking crap from sexist men under her tent. It may be her year, but I am still holding out for John Edwards. He can tell the corporate boys to stick it where the sun don't shine. Giordy

Giodano:
Yes you are right. Like I said before, if she gets the nominee, I shall vote for a Republican, not only because I know she is a very deceptive evil Bush Clone. But the cycle of Bush, Clinton, Bush needs to be broke, for the salvation of our country.
If that doesn't help break the cycle, and she gets elected, (God Forbid), I will have to leave and go down to Latin America and ride it out until the sheeple realize that they fucked up again.
