Republican John McCain on Thursday rejected a Fox News Channel request to stop airing a television ad that includes footage of the presidential candidate at a debate sponsored by the cable network.

In the ad, McCain is shown at the debate saying: "A few days ago, Senator Clinton tried to spend $1 million on the Woodstock concert museum."

"Now my friends, I wasn't there. I'm sure it was a cultural and pharmaceutical event," he says. "I was tied up at the time." It was a referance to the 5 1/2 years McCain spent in a North Vietnamese prison.

mccain should have gone to woodstock, he may have picked up some integrity there and realized just how sleazy his swift boat buds were

It is just amazing how the rightwing morons keep playing this one million dollars as though it is the highest amount of money ever used by anyone to build something.

BUT not a word about FIVE HUNDRED million for bridges to nowhere, even though they are not going to be built now, the state now gets to blow the money anyway they choose.

But a million for a cultural event that is STILL well known today and was a turning point in our history culturally. The last time a rock concert was totally cool. The last time it was a non violent musical event and everyone got along. The last time before Altamont and the end of a musical era.

So what if there is a museum with some funding from taxpayers, so fucking what? We've spent money, in the billions of far less importance and no one blinked an eye.

BUT then again, that is what the Thug party does, make mountains of our molehills while ignoring the real problem.

Yeah, real funny! With the trillions wasted, then pay you back with interest folks criticize the Woodstock Memorial and Museum...

they lied so many times during that debate I can't count them all. Most of them did it. and this remark of his that he has run into the ground is stretching the truth of the details behind this memorial. and as mentioned. complaining about $1 million (which hillary did not actually ask for) is a joke compared to the trillion bush has wasted lining the pockets of his wealthy corporate friends.

Yo McCain ya old fart, go google "war profiteers" then get back to me on a measely $1 million...

McCain is like my 3 year old. She says something cute or funny, gets a laugh out of everybody - then says it again about 15 times... Then its no longer funny, but we sort of giggle just to keep her happy.

Same thing is happening in McCains old warped mind.

The quip was excellent. McCain made a great point encompassing the great schism of modern American political/cultural history with a bit of humor.

He should actually be the poster child for the anti-Iraq war movement. A nobel American who served his country well, sent to fight, be captured and tortured in a war that had no legitimous purpose (that would be self defense). We continue to create more John McCain type patriots. Those people who valiantly serve their country, even when their country has sent them on ill-fated missions for unjustifiable reasons.

And, while McCain himself cannot comprehend the catastrophic consequences (personal/political/economical and security) of our incursion into Iraq, he and honorable veterans like him, are the reason we must not elect those who subject our country to war as a matter of political choice.

I can't stand McCain and have zero respect for him. What an embarrassment. Read his REAL bio, before he was captured. Then he gets captured and survives 5 yrs of torture.. ok, good for him, but 40 yrs later he's running his campaign on this? why? is it all he has to run a campaign on?

I'm embarrassed for him. 72 yrs old by the time a president is inaugurated. The old fart doesn't deserve the part.

The most egregious thinking error in his comments suggest that because he had the misfortune to have been a POW that the Vietnam War was therefore just -- that those who protested it were drugged out cowards.

I didn't go to Woodstock. I was tied down in college and didn't have the cash or the connections. But if anyone had asked me to go to Vietnam, I had the social and moral awareness to tell them to go fuck themselves and I still do.

George Bush as a hawk during that war -- a child of privilege who proved to be the real coward for not putting his ass on the line with his so-called war mongering beliefs. The kids who went to prison for matters of conscience during those years, or who died at Kent State, or many of those who emigrated to Canada as a matter of conscience, leaving their their families of origin behind, were the real heroes of that war, one of whom was John Kerry.

I don't hold it against McCain that he went if he was drafted, but I gotta opine that if he volunteered he was a fool -- an unenlightened fool. Despite Nixon's lies, Johnson's hidden mistakes and Kennedy's covered-up assassination by the right wing, there was plenty opportunity in our generation to get the truth -- just as now where 25% of the country have closed their minds to the reality of this Administration's war crimes, profiteering and callous cause of human suffering so they can wave a flag, stick a yellow ribbon on their SUV and Praise a Zealot Jezuuzzz the blood stained War Criminal of Evangelical Revelations.

McCain continues to support this war for empire, oil, Israeli security at the cost of our economic future and for his own personal political gain. I say fuck him and the horse he rode in on. He doesn't deserve the blessings of liberty about which he demagogues.

it was his one good line at the 'debate' so he will milk it to death. Of course the cultural significance of the woodstock thing was totally lost on him. His point though was valid. I cant stand McCain but he was indeed doing some hard time but that doesn't mean that woodstock was not part of american culture whether he likes it or not.

Well, at least we know that there will be 300,000+ Woodstock attendees not voting for McCain...

Tin Soldiers and Nixon coming;
We're finally on our own.
This summer I hear the drumming;
Four dead in Ohio.

Gotta get down to it,
Soldiers are cutting us down
Should have been done long ago.
What if you knew her and
Found her dead on the ground?
How could you run when you know?

In Memorium - Allison Krause, William Schroeder, Jeffrey Miller, Sandra Scheuer

Please let us not forget that we of the peace movement gave our lives so that this country could remain free. We are now called again to make that great sacrifice in the ever resurgent face of fascism and corporatism.

Yes, John McCain, you have suffered. But you suffered in vain. You suffered for the wrong reasons, for Nixon's reasons and for exploitation by the right-wing of the 60s and 70s. Now we are faced again with the tragic loss of our young in a war of profit and empire. Are you willing to make the real sacrifice that is called for in this time of corruption and injustice? Will you sacrifice your political career so that freedom, civil liberty and justice can be restored to the people you would claim to serve?
