I Like ItI Don’t Like It

The decision of Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign to send 100 or more new staffers into Iowa demonstrates that she and her aides have determined to their own satisfaction that she can cripple Barack Obama in the first-in-the-nation caucus.

2007-10-27-hil.jpgIowa is the only state where current surveys show Obama to be within shooting distance of Clinton. In late August, Clinton took a small lead of 5.2 percent in a poll of likely Democratic caucus goers. That lead, the smallest Clinton holds in any early primary or caucus state, has held up through seven of the eight most recent polls, increasing the willingness of the Clinton team to gamble on a new offensive.

The Obama campaign has already described the January 3 Iowa contest as a must-win event. Clinton's burst of hiring is a declaration that she intends to go for a knockout punch.

There clearly is some risk for Clinton in this strategy: if her campaign is perceived as laying down the gauntlet in Iowa, a defeat would become all the more damaging. Clinton aides remain unwilling to discuss the significance of the upgraded Iowa staffing, resolved to dodge high expectations.

Until now, Clinton has pointedly maintained a comparatively low-key Iowa operation, spending substantially less money than Obama on in-state television, and maintaining a smaller contingent of local campaign workers.

Clinton's calculatedly discreet Iowa staffing commitment was designed to provide the candidate with cover in the event of a loss. Her slim advantage in Iowa polls now allows her to adopt a more aggressive strategy. The campaign hopes to do much of the new hiring on Sunday and Monday.

As recently as a month ago, Obama's campaign acknowledged publicly that Iowa would be crucial to the viability of the Illinois Senator's drive for the White House. "Iowa will make the difference," Michelle Obama said campaigning in Davenport on September 26. "If Barack doesn't win Iowa, it's just a dream, but if we win Iowa, then we can move the world as it should be."

Likewise, Obama's manager, David Plouffe, told the New Republic, "Iowa: that's the whole shebang."

Now, in the spin wars, Obama operatives contend that Clinton is the candidate who cannot afford to lose.

Story continues below
advertisement

"She's in a tough spot, she needs to win Iowa, and every state, or her aura of inevitability is shattered," said Obama spokesman Bill Burton.

At the moment, Clinton holds double-digit leads in every state that hosts an early caucus or primary -- except Iowa. There, an average of the five latest polls shows her with 28.8 percent to Obama's 23.6 percent and John Edwards' 21.2 percent -- just over 5 points in her favor.

Since the start of summer, both Clinton and Obama have made gains against the former Iowa frontrunner, John Edwards, who throughout last spring held first place in the state and who hoped a good showing in Iowa would turn his campaign around.

As Edwards' standing in Iowa nosedived over the summer and fall, his staff investment has also been eclipsed by Obama. In an October analysis of third-quarter reports to the Federal Election Commission, the Des Moines Register reported that Obama had more staffers in Iowa - 145 - than any of his competitors, with Edwards at 130 and Clinton at 117. Clinton's new hiring is likely to eradicate Obama's personnel advantage.

The emphasis on Iowa this year -- and the plowing-in of resources -- marks the third election in a row in which the Hawkeye state is playing a key role in the Democratic nomination process. It has not always been this way. The salience of the Iowa caucuses has varied from election to election.

Since 1972, when Iowa first became a critical test of strength in a presidential race, the caucus has at times been key to the outcome, and at other times irrelevant.

In 1976, 2000 and 2004, Iowa victories by Jimmy Carter, Al Gore and John Kerry put them on the path to becoming the party's nominee. In 1972, 1988 and 1992, victories by Edmund Muskie, Richard Gephardt, and Tom Harkin proved to have zero lasting value. On the GOP side, Gerald Ford, Bob Dole (1996), George W. Bush (2000) won in Iowa and won their party's nomination. It is worth noting, however, that over the past 25 years, of the 13 winners of contested Iowa caucuses, eight won the nomination, but only two - Carter and George W. Bush - went on to win the White House.

I am a traditional Black female democract, and I dislike Hillary and Bill. Hillary panders to black voters and I cannot understand why blacks are voting for her. She will say and do anything to get their votes, but some blacks are just stupid and naive they believe every thing that comes from this woman's mouth. She refers to blacks as victims and these dummies really think they are victims. Wake up black folk and 'smell the coffee', she is not the one.
If she wins the primary I will not vote for her; and will campaign against her to get other blacks to do the same thing.
Obama/Edward 08!

Now there was a fact filled post. You dislike Hillary and Bill. Hillary is trying to get black votes, is she? Well, that's certainly a criminal thing to do. See, no other candidate goes after ethnic votes, do they? That makes Hillary Clinton bad, she's SO bad. I think public hanging would be too good for her, since she's PANDERING.

Don't vote for her, vote for a republic, after all you KNOW what you're getting, right?

I'll continue backing Hillary, and I'll vote for her, in case you're the least bit interested.

Hope you've enjoyed the Bush Administration's cozying up to corporations and paranoid secrecy. 'Cause you're going to get a whole lot more of that under Clinton.

Hillary and Bill have built their political careers on providing access to certain black politicans and civic leaders; whereas the actual merits of their policies have had little lasting impact on the overall lives of black Americans. They both seem to embody the concept of 'perception is reality.' And, the perception that they seem to hone in on is creating the impression that they are friendly to blacks, a perception that some whites have as well bought into as just as many hate the 'Clintons' for what they see as their pandering to black Americans.

The clear winners in all of this is the Clinton's themselves who in reality have done for little for black Americans except for benefiting the Rangels and Wynns who they use to drum up black support. To whit: Hillary's fake visit to Selma, AL was cursory as Hillary will do little to effect the lives of those who came out to hear her speak about the past injustices across the south. These injustices persist in spite of the 8 years already bestowed on Bill Clinton, and giving 4 more to Hillary won't change this fact.

Black voters are no different than other voters in that we want politicans who can remember the past, but we want politicans who aren't simply satisfied with 'just' remembering, we want candidates who intend to change things for the better. Hillary is hardly able to fit such a Bill.

Hillary is the ONLY hope for the GOP. Probably the worst Dem candidate ... at least for those who wish a true change. She polarizes, is just not a decent human and is beholden to HUGE interests. The GOP will be delighted if she is the nom.

Our country is so damn tired of the Clinton-Bush cycle. Anyone but Hillary. Jeez.

These same Hillary haters seemingly have only a few words in their lexicon. One of them that they parrot ad nauseum is "polarize". There are many political types that cause voters to "polarize". George Bush is a BIG "polarizer". But I've only heard this term used against Sen. Clinton. Apparently she's not that "polarizing" in New York where she won by overwhelming majorities in 2000 and 2006.

These people are out of gas and when these left wingnuts and the righties can't argue the issues and ideas, they resort to this kind of namecalling. It's really getting a little stale, people.

I believe they misunderstand the term "polarize". Clinton is reviled on both the far left and the far right. That is, of course, nearly the exact opposite of polarizing. I think when they use the term "polarize" (incorrectly), they really mean she has high negatives. That is true, but so will any Dem (and the Repub too) when the general election nears. Both sides will be hit hard with negative ads nearly non-stop. The real question is, who will weather that onslaught and who will fold under it? Gore weathered it well enough to win but lost in court. Bill Clinton weathered it well and won, twice. Kerry, did not handle the onslaught very well and he lost.

You know what else is getting stale? How we're all getting the alleged "inevitability" of Hillary being nominated shoved down our throats.

She is a total joke and bush in a pantsuit.

I, too, am female and have voted Democratic my entire life BUT I will never vote for Hillary even if it means withholding my vote entirely. She is nothing but a bu$hit political hack...no morals, no principles. Every move determined by a poll, money donated, political expediency, etc. etc. She stands for nothing ESP. NOTHING THAT I BELIEVE IN....

I liked the 8 years before the past 7 years.

The fact that you're a female doesn't matter, just show some link to prove that half the party feels the way you do. Just because your favorite candidate is tanking, you feel the need to slime Hillary Clinton...

Eighty-one percent (81%) of Democrats say that Clinton is at least somewhat likely to win the White House if nominated by her party. That's up from 75% a month ago and the current total includes an astounding 50% of Democrats who believe she is Very Likely to win it all if nominated. No other candidate—Republican or Democrat—comes close to that figure. A month ago, 41% of Democrats thought Clinton was Very Likely to winAmong all voters, 59% now say that Clinton has a chance of winning the White House if nominated. That's up from 53% a month ago. Among unaffiliated voters, 55% now believe the former First Lady would have a chance, up from 42% a month ago.

I think it has already been decided anyway. We do not even need to go vote.

Hillary has won...we know this because the polls told us so.

Just stay home in Novemeber and we will see how fraudulent and fixed the voting is.

Amricans do not even need to show up at the voting booth anymore for candidates to be elected.

We know this because the polls told us, so.

How to break this to you, Jeffie..NOBODY READS SPAM...The only thing you are accomplishing is killing this thread.

It's too bad too, because there are so many trolls who want to tell us that Hillary Clinton is unelectable, that her negatives are too high, that she is "going for the kill" (that is, putting more people into Iowa..she should be put to death for that.)

C'mon Hillary bashers, have at it. It's all a media conspiracy, right? People are NOT going to vote for Hillary, and therefore a republic will be back in the white house?

Just who is going to beat Hillary in the general election? You people are just doing what Rove tells you to. Rove, what a slug. He said "Hillary is a flawed candidate".

This from a bastard who single handedly bought the white house for Bushwacker...and he dares call any other candidate "flawed"?

Keep it up, trolls, as if it will do you any freakin' good.

Someone in the Democratic Party has made a deal with the devil and have made the GOP very, very happy.
Running against Hillary is their only hope of keeping the White House.
Besides her obvious baggage, Ms. Clinton's Congress has 17% approval ratings. Progressive Democrats won't vote for her.
Leave it to the Democrats to perpetually pull defeat out of the jaws of victory.

Well, the media has decided it folks. No sense in bothering to vote. Originally they were calling it as a close race between Clinton and Obama. (They never thought any of the other candidates were worth our time or theirs.) But now the media has chosen Clinton - and without a single vote cast. Saves all us citizens a tremendous amount of time and trouble. Reading all those candidates qualifications and their position statements on the issues. And then having to drive to the polling places and maybe wait in line. Thanks to the news media and pundits we have all been relieved of these cumbersome burdens that make out democracy work. Thank you.

It is just amazing how HRC could sell experience to Americans for sleeping with the President in the same bed for 8 years; the same man who, during that period, chased every skirt around. What kind of experience when she could not even keep her man in their bed? What kind of koolaid is america drinking?

Events are subject to change, of course. But right now Hillary and Rudy are leading in the polls.

Both are hawks on foreign policy. Both support "free trade." Clinton's Nafta and Bush's Cafta both screw American worker's equally.

Both are strong supporters of gay and abortion rights. Rudy is tougher on gun control than Clinton.

Since they believe in the same things, you are left with the personal trivia. Rudy's three marriages and counting, will be matched up against Bill's next honey.

And anybody with any intelligence will stay home on election day and have a really stiff drink.

I know this is going to piss a lot of people off but before the regime of Bush II, Bill Clinton was the most republican president ever: caved to Newt Gingrich (the now famous "I get it speech," bombing of Kosovo, NAFTA, CAFTA, WTO supporter. His bitch will be more of the same, only this time she'll be gettin' the oval office special.

Bill Clinton had more war(incursions) under his regime, then any other president in history.

1996-02-08 - Telecom Reform Act: eliminated major ownership restrictions for radio and television groups.

Extraordinary rendition got approval for the first time in the USA from the Clinton administration.

Also in 1993, Clinton promoted another controversial issue during this period regarding free trade when he supported the North American Free Trade Agreement for ratification by the U.S. Senate. Clinton, along with most of his Democratic Leadership Committee allies, strongly supported free trade measures. Opposition came from anti-trade Republicans, protectionist Democrats and supporters of Ross Perot. However, despite this opposition, the treaty was ratified by the Senate and signed into law by the President on 1 January 1994.[37]

Hillary Clinton cannot recruit staff from Iowa. She is running ads in DC and Northern VA. Interestingly, she is also running her ad on Craigs List.

Iowans know that Hillary Clinton is not being forthcoming with them. She refuses questions, accuses audience members of being "plants" when they ask a legitimate question, calls Iowans "sexist", and is now going to bring in outsiders to do a job that they will never be accepted to do, as they are not locals.

The nation will begin to see that Hillary has no clear answers about the direction of America. She has cast some very bad votes, and she has not apologized or even acknowledged her errors. She is running on her husband's name and resume, and refuses to release records from her own time in the White House, in spite of claiming this "experience".

It is time for someone to tell the emperor (or empress) that they have no clothes.

It is time for America to ask for more than someone who won't be as bad as the one that we've got. Let's raise the bar a bit.
