Politico:

Fully compensating for his campaign's odd war on a student newspaper, Edwards spokesman Eric Schultz puts out this statement:

For those who missed Stephen Colbert's misleading attack on John Edwards in the State newspaper this weekend, I wanted to make sure we had an opportunity to set the record straight. http://www.thestate.com/living/story/212372.html .

RHETORIC VS REALITY: STEPHEN COLBERT - PLAYING LOOSE WITH THE FACTS

CLAIM: Edwards abandoned South Carolina when he was one year old.

FACT: Edwards was born in South Carolina, learned to walk in South Carolina, learned to talk to in South Carolina, and will kick Stephen Colbert's New York City butt in South Carolina.

"Stephen Colbert claims to represent a new kind of politics, but today we see he's participating in the slash and burn politics that has no place in American discourse. The truthiness is, as the candidate of Doritos, Colbert's hands are stained by corporate corruption and nacho cheese. John Edwards has never taken a dime from salty food lobbyists and America deserves a President who isn't in the pocket of the snack food special interests."

Stephen Colbert as Colbert is a laugh and I watch him and John Stewart nearly every day. His skewering of Bu$h and the stenography club at the steno corp dinner was hilarious. He should keep doing what he does best and leave the running of the country to Edwards. Stephen Colbert is no John Edwards.Perhaps Edwards will tap Colbert for his vice president. Then he could segue his way into the big seat in eight more years.

Oh, come on now! I saw this Colbert episode and I thought it was funny. I am an Edwards supporter; if one of Edwards' staffers thought Colbert's comedy was some sort of an, 'attack' , then they seriously need to get-a-life, and quit being so anal!

LOL

Edwards/Obama '08!

The response was clever and amusing,
Lighten up!
I also think Edwards has a lot to offer and hope more people will learn about what he stand for--unions, people who aren't wealthy, people who grew up the way he did.

Politics is a slimy, scum-filled pond. Stop expecting our leaders to be perfect. Hillary's not my first choice, but she knows how to play the game (to win). You can't affect change if you aren't elected.

Instead of dealing with actual issues and having actual debates (like the rest of the civilized world does), what do we do? "Presidential debates" are corporate events. The candidates talk about not taking corporate money. But in the end most will because they know they have to. Hillary is arrogant, laughs in your face and says f**k yeah I'll take the money. We have people dying in hospital hallways because they're:
a) a poor person of color
b)have no health insurance (many times due to no fault of their own)
c) an illegal immigrant(not criminal) who only wants to find a better life for themselves. Every American who says they would never do that is a hypocrite. But the "superior" health care system says go in the corner and die. We don't care about you.

If Colbert was REALLY smart and not just about plugging his book and ratings, he would use this opportunity to bring attention to actual issues. Name one other country in the world that treats a comedian as an actual candidate? But that means campaign consulting, Steve. And you'd have to pay my outrageous fee.

With the news last week about Edwards standing up for average workers and against corporate America and now this week about his stance on "free trade" I have to say, the guy is really
growing on me.

He seems like the most progressive of the "Big 3" candidates.

He's a great choice for people who can't stomach another DLC, corporate democrat (Hillary) but also realize being too much of an idealist and voting for someone who has NO chance (Kucinich, right or wrong) isn't the best idea either.

PS---It's stupid to not take him seriously on these issues because he has money. By that logic we shouldn't view FDR as a progressive (he actually had a LOT more money than Edwards has), despite the fact he was the most economically progressive president in our history.

If debating Colbert is the best Edwards can do, then it is time for him to hang it up; go back to NC; and take care of his wife and family.

Ya know... most people lose in a debate with Colbert, or haven't you been paying attention?
Edwards is reaching the Colbert demographics.
Very smart on Edwards part!

I love it! It shows Colbert has a voice, and Edwards has a sense of humor. Perhaps we should consider a new ticket for 2008, "Edwards and Colbert." Wouldn't that be a match-up? Personally, now that I look at it, it doesn't seem so unappealing!
