Fully compensating for his campaign's odd war on a student newspaper, Edwards spokesman Eric Schultz puts out this statement:

RHETORIC VS REALITY: STEPHEN COLBERT - PLAYING LOOSE WITH THE FACTS

CLAIM: Edwards abandoned South Carolina when he was one year old.

FACT: Edwards was born in South Carolina, learned to walk in South Carolina, learned to talk to in South Carolina, and will kick Stephen Colbert's New York City butt in South Carolina.

"Stephen Colbert claims to represent a new kind of politics, but today we see he's participating in the slash and burn politics that has no place in American discourse. The truthiness is, as the candidate of Doritos, Colbert's hands are stained by corporate corruption and nacho cheese. John Edwards has never taken a dime from salty food lobbyists and America deserves a President who isn't in the pocket of the snack food special interests."

Edwards clearly demonstrates why he's the best choice the country could make. He has the kind of confident sense of humor that can draw up a funny response to Colbert but also a response that lards in the idea of corporate pandering, corporate disregard for health, and a great retort to the suggestion he has abandoned his home state. (Caution: Use of the word lard does not signify or otherwise hint that Frito-Lay still uses that commodity)

I a little confused. Is Edwards joking back? Or is he actually taking this seriously. I hope its the former. If so the response was a little to subtle for me, but that's ok.

If Edwards is really taking this seriously, then he can't take a joke and missed the point of Colbert's show and campaign and therefore wouln't make such a good president.

Are there really people out there that can't figure out that Colbert's campaign is a satirical extension of his satirical show that has broken free of the bonds of the medium of tv? His whole persona exists to make fun of the people he acts like. He's great and all, but it's just a tv show.

I think Edwards' response was funny. He obviously gets the joke, as evidenced by his reference to kicking Colbert's "New York City butt" and his hands being stained by "nacho cheese". Edwards must have a joke writer on staff.

...having said that,I think that this presidential campaign is just too important for this country and its future position in the rest of the world, I believe it is a pivotal point in this country's history, I feel that so much (in fact, too much) is at stake here...it's just so crucial... too crucial to be messed around with, played with, interferred with and to be distracted from, and for that reason, I wish that Colbert would invest in some other "event" of less importance, to humor his audience...

If Edwards hadn't refused to commit to getting all troops and contractors out of Iraq by 2013 (2013????????????????) and hadn't voted to give Bush the authority to start the war, and if he came out for withdrawal of all US troops from Iraq (ASAP) in a manner wholly safe for the troops (no longer than 3 months), and committed not to attack Iran, I would seriously consider supporting him for engaging the Colbert/Putin campaign. Refusing to commit to getting out by 2013 (2013????????????) simply means Edwards was insincere about his apology for voting to give Bush the authority to go to war anyway.

That we have so many candidates for president now on the list and most of them won't get to the plate to bat after the conventions puts us at just one more blowhard who wants to stir things up. The idea of a phoney candidate in such an election is just one more reason the get out the vote will have colbert elected even in jest. With so many not liking the choice they are given in the real election...does anyone remember what's his name Pat Paulson wasn't it? he also ran as a joke and so many people have lost touch with reality and no longer read/listen/watch the real news they might elect him for real.
