I Like ItI Don’t Like It

This morning on Fox News Sunday, Laura Bush forcefully dismissed conservatives who attacked her for wearing a Muslim headscarf during her visit last wek to the Middle East. "Oh, you've got to be kidding me," she said, before disagreeing with one Weekly Standard columnist's claim that she had given "a tacit endorsement of Islam's subjugation of women."

"[T]hey saw this as giving me a gift from their culture," Bush said. "And it was the scarf with the pink ribbons and the pink edging on it, the breast cancer scarf, that I put on." She added later, "I think we all have these stereotypes of each other, Americans and Arabs, and it's a really good thing to be able to break those stereotypes down and get to know each other."

Watch it:

Full transcript:

WALLACE: Of course, Mrs. Bush, with a higher profile almost inevitably comes criticism. And some conservatives in this country are upset with you -- and we have a picture up there on the screen...

BUSH: Oh, you've got to be kidding.

WALLACE: ... for putting on a scarf given to you...

BUSH: Oh, really?

WALLACE: ... by a Saudi doctor. And let me put up a blast, if you will, from The Weekly Standard. That she would oblige her hosts by wearing a shmata, which is Yiddish for a scarf, on her head is a tacit endorsement of Islam's subjugation of women.

BUSH: Well, I did not see it that way at all. In fact, I'd had the meeting with them totally uncovered. I mean, you saw other photographs, obviously.

WALLACE: Right.

BUSH: And they saw this as giving me a gift from their culture. And it was the scarf with the pink ribbons and the pink edging on it, the breast cancer scarf, that I put on.

I will say that I told them that I had always felt like they were closed to me, that I wouldn't be able to reach them because of the way they're covered, and one of the women said to me -- she said, You know, I may be all dressed in black, but I am transparent.

And what they were saying to me is they want to reach out. They want American women to know what they're like. And these women do not see covering as some sort of subjugation of women, this group of women that I was with.

That's their culture. That's their tradition. That's a religious choice of theirs.

Now, I did meet, on the other hand, in Kuwait, where women just got the vote in 2005, with a group of women activists, several of them who had run for office the first parliamentary election after women got the vote -- didn't win, any of them, but they made the first step, certainly, by getting in the political process.

And in that meeting, very few women were covered. And they don't feel like they have to be. But you know, I think we all have these stereotypes of each other, Americans and Arabs, and it's a really good thing to be able to break those stereotypes down and get to know each other.

She covered up her stiff looking hair. As long as her husband gets the oil what does she care?

Is it OK to respect a culture with head scarves
while we bomb their women and children?

Bombing civilians from 40,000 feet it part of American Culture. Dresden is part of our tradition.

Among the teachings of Islam.

Surah 9:29 - Fight against such of those who have been given the Scripture as believe not in Allah

Surah 4:89 - They wish that you disbelieve as they have disbelieved, then you become equal. Do not consider them friends, unless they mobilize along with you in the cause of GOD. If they turn against you, you shall fight them, and you may kill them when you encounter them in war. You shall not accept them as friends, or allies

Surah 4:101 - When ye travel through the earth, there is no blame on you if ye shorten your prayers, for fear the Unbelievers May attack you: For the Unbelievers are unto you open enemies.

Surah 2.191 - And kill them wherever you find them, and drive them out from whence they drove you out, and persecution is severer than slaughter, and do not fight with them at the Sacred Mosque until they fight with you in it, but if they do fight you, then slay them; such is the recompense of the unbelievers.

Surah 3:85 - Anyone who accepts other than Submission as his religion, it will not be accepted from him, and in the Hereafter, he will be with the losers.

Hadith 4:196 - I have been ordered to fight with the people till they say, none has the right to be worshipped but Allah.

Hadith 4:73 - Know that paradise is under the shades of the swords.

Hadith 9:57 - Whoever changes his Islamic religion, kill him.

Hadith 9:50 - No Muslim should be killed for killing an infidel.

Hadith 5:716 - Turn the pagans (non-Muslims) out of the Arabian Peninsula.

Al Bukhari 4:196 - I have been ordered to fight with the people till they say, none has the right to be worshipped but Allah.

Al Bukhari 1:35 - The person who participates in (Holy Battles) in Allah's cause and nothing compels him to do so except belief in Allah and His Apostle, will be recompensed by Allah either with a reward, or booty if he survives or will be admitted to paradise if he is killed.

TimN:

"If anyone comes to me and does not hate his father and mother, his wife and children, his brothers and sisters-yes even his own life -he cannot be my disciple." - Luke 14:26

"Ye shall walk after the LORD your God, and fear him, and keep his commandments, and obey his voice, and ye shall serve him, and cleave unto him.

"And that prophet, or that dreamer of dreams, shall be put to death; because he hath spoken to turn you away from the LORD your God, which brought you out of the land of Egypt, and redeemed you out of the house of bondage, to thrust thee out of the way which the LORD thy God commanded thee to walk in. So shalt thou put the evil away from the midst of thee." Deuteronomy 13:4-5

So yeah, when people believe in spooks and invisible guys in the sky it can make them do stupid, violent things. What's your point?

I'm sure that the whole thing was staged, from the wearing of the scarf to the way it was presented on Fox News.

Call me a cynic, but I've seen too much of this type of thing from these people.

A lot of people here seem to feel that she did this great thing. She did exactly what she was told to do. Why she was told to do it, I just don't know. Someone saw something positive in it.

Maybe if we feel nicey - nicey about her, we might feel nicey - nicey about her husband.

I just don't know.

Good observation. Gestures such as donning a headscarf to show respect for another culture ring really hollow when the spouse of this person is Saber rattling with words about bombing to start WW III in countries where this is the custom.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 09:40 PM on 10/28/2007

Yes it was staged. It's all staged. It is a message that the Bush regime is not anti Muslim. It’s part of the make nice campaign before the bombing starts again.

I agree, nothing wrong with what Mrs. Bush did. I wondered if any conservatives would attack her on this, since they so venomously attacked Speaker Pelosi for the same thing. All Mrs. Bush did was respect their culture, and a gift she was given. At least she has more of an open mind about Islamic culture than her husband does.

Maybe The Schmata will be in style this Christmas.

Want to look smart
Wear a schmata!

The male Schmata (think Arafat) is selling like hot-cakes; unbelievably enough, Urban Outfitters was marketing it as a "Peace Scarf". It coordinates well with that other symbol of Peace .. the Che T-shirt the Left loves to wear.

Respect their culture? The headscarf is a symbol of oppression. Will they stone their dumbass daughters next for not being virgins? That's Islamic culture too.

Oh brave brave Laura. If it had been a liberal who did it the White House, State Department and Pentagon would be denouncing it, Congressional Republicans would be promoting a resolution condemning (with cowering Democratic support), and all the evangelicals would be shouting about it from their pulpits.

Laura is Enabler in Chief of the worst president in American history. When she steps out of the White House into reality again, she'll be faced with truth about what she has helped George Bush do to the Constitution, the nation, Iraq and the World.

I admire Mrs Bush for what she did (even if Im no fan of her Husband ) she represented America well , (represented the decent open flexible part of Americans who did not vote for her husband )

If you believe it's "decent open and flexible" to publicly don a symbol of oppression. Oh, and I didn't vote for her dumbass husband either. Republicans AND Muslims repress women...no thank you.

Well, I have to say it's an improvement over Karen Hughes' first visit after her appointment as Ambassadress to Islambia or whatever her position was supposed to be. She went to the Middle East and made some speech about how we in America understood that yonder women wanted to be jist lak us 'n all. So it's quite a relief to see Laura Bush making a purty little speech about how the lives of Middle Eastern women are a tad more complicated than the provincial world view of conservative America allows. Golly, Gomer, what a revelation!

Laura did the right thing. She is obviously not your every-day visitor to a foreign country. The subjugation of women in Arabic culture is real - and a topic for another forum/discussion.
Another topic might be: Why is it that Republican first ladies are so much more intelligent than their husbands?

What Laura Bush did was show respect for the Middle Eastern traditions. Respect is something about which the Conservatives know absolutely nothing.
