New York Times:

The nation's top official for consumer product safety has asked Congress in recent days to reject legislation intended to strengthen the agency, which polices thousands of consumer goods, from toys to tools.

On the eve of an important Senate committee meeting to consider the legislation, Nancy A. Nord, the acting chairwoman of the Consumer Product Safety Commission, has asked lawmakers in two letters not to approve the bulk of legislation that would increase the agency's authority, double its budget and sharply increase its dwindling staff.

Vote with your dollars people.
It goes like this...
1. Don't buy cheap plastic shit from China.
2. No one makes money selling cheap plastic shit from China.
3. No one sells cheap plastic shit from China.

To illustrate this point in a more positive manner...
Eight years ago I started buying organic milk. Back then, I could only get it at one store in town. Organic milk tastes so much better than the other kind that I stuck with it. Now people can buy organic milk in almost every grocery store in the US.
This is how we take back our economy.
Vote with our dollars. Money is the only thing that matters to these bush administration appointees.

Ive seen what happens with all the recalls. They end up at stores that target the lower income families in the US. Go look in your local Big Lots , Family Dollar and some have even ended up a Walgreen.

This is a perfect and horrible example of why the conservatives' and neoliberals' (Wall St., Bill Clinton, Robert Rubin) "free trade" and Milton Friedman / Grover Norquist et al "free market" (drown the government in the bathtub, "kill" the regulatory agencies) are so wrong and harmful to us at large on so many levels. It's nakedly obvious when the head of the CSPS agency (the Bushco exec. branch Consumer Protection agency) says in the New York Times that she doesn't want more funding and resources.

I actually posted a few articles about this last week
"Mattel suffers from the "lead paint pandemic" ....again. Offers Lead Paint to All"

http://newssophisticate.blogspot.com/2007/10/mattel-suffers-from-lead-paint.html

Who do these toy manufactures care about? Obviously not our children. Mattel has once again recalled a plethora of toys. 55,000 to be exact, but with the enormous amounts of despicable toys continue to mount around Mattel's cost benefit analysis.

and "China lead toy Fix..Relabel Toys with "Made in Hong Kong", instead of China"
http://newssophisticate.blogspot.com/2007/10/china-lead-toy-fixrelabel-toys-with.html

plus I have a couple of goodies I posted today. Check 'em out

Let us not forget that it was under Clinton that we sent our industry to China to escape enviornmental and labor protections.I will not hold my breath for the Democrats to change this.

Bless her heart!
She's doing a heck of a job.
For the head of an agency to reject increasing its power is very hinky!
In the wake of product problems this person shows incompetance and should be removed from office. Was she put in this position to destroy the Consumer Agency?

Our TOXIC relations with China are more important to Bush/Cheney Admin than the TOXIC toys our children play with!

Good comment. I'm with you; that's why people who say they won't vote for Hillary are wrong. If they put a Republican in the White House again, it will be more of this.
