BeckWatch: Reclaiming The 'Four Freedoms'

2007-10-26-glenn_beck.jpgLast week, Glenn Beck brought CNN viewers "Liberty In Peril," which we have to imagine was thusly named so as to achieve a little co-branded synergy with A. Coop's seemingly-running-ad-infinitum Planet In Peril special. Hey! An idea: why not put together a Beck hosted attack on the media that riffs on this! Call it: "The News: An American Nightmare!" That's a freebie, Glenn: run with it!

Anyway, "Liberty In Peril?" Yeah, okay. We can get behind this. Sounds like a fertile ground to talk about any number of key issues. Think wiretapping, sneak-and-peeks, seizure of library records, habeas corpus, extraordinary rendition, torture. All "of-the-minute" topics. All deserving of media attention. And all completely omitted from this show. What was Beck mainly concerned with? Invading Mexican armies that will steal guns, destroy Nativity scenes and foment a rebellion in Vermont. Or something. Really. Read the transcript if you missed the show, and marvel at how Beck's tete-a-tete with a pair of dyed-in-the-wool secessionists succeed in making the secessionists seem the more sensible party by comparison.

But if this pointless little trip into the parlor of a paranoiac has a zenith, it comes at the end, when Beck begins an extended riff on, of all things, Franklin Delano Roosevelt's "Four Freedoms" speech and the Norman Rockwell paintings they engendered. Obviously, the very existence of Beck's show indicates that the Freedom of Speech is alive and well, but that doesn't make the invocation of FDR's famous speech in this instance any less bizarre.

He's really worried about the Freedom of Worship when Christmas decorations are already up in stores? In a nation where Christianity is, by and large, enjoying a fairly unprecedented run of political success? (And all the while, begrudging Muslim Americans a few footbaths?) He can seriously celebrate "Freedom of Want" as nothing more than a "strong family" about to tuck into a "glorious turkey" without addressing the means by which those families can be better supported. In his "Four Freedoms" speech, Roosevelt placed specific value on "old-age pensions and unemployment insurance," widening "opportunities for adequate medical care," "a better system by which persons deserving or needing gainful employment may obtain it," and personal sacrifice, which included "the payment of more money in taxes."

And, as far as "Freedom from Fear" goes, let me remind you, that days later, Beck will air a program in which he'll wildly speculate that a perennial act of nature, California Wildfires, are almost-certainly-not but who-knows-maybe-they-are the work of terrorists. Really. With Freedom From Fear Freedom Fighters like Beck, who needs fearmongers.

At any rate, Beck's "Liberty in Peril" was sponsored in part "by the Sleep Number Bed by Select Comfort." So, no matter what peril Beck finds our liberty in, there's no reason you can't grab a good night's sleep.

It's true that Beck is nutty enough to star on the Fox Newsfixers Channel. Although it is difficult to draw distinctions among this crowd, there is one who stands head and shoulders above the rest of the gang for sheer ignorance, stupidity, and ideological lunacy. This creature is Sean Hannutsy, who is the idol and mentor of the nest of pathetic Dupes who regularly infest HuffPost. Those Dupes who are in every respect clones of Hannutsy delight in behaving as he does by referring to "the looney left" or similar perjoratives, while pretending to decency and truthfulness on their part.

So, for the benefit of the Dupes, here is Hannutsy's breath-taking nuttiness on full display. It is difficult to believe that an adult male with any self-respect would even consider going on record with this drivel, despite his enthusiastic willingness to indulge himself in disgusting, sycophantic grovelling in the presence of the Neofascist Republicans in charge of the Party:

it makes me wonder what the american priorities are. i myself think its the allmighty dollar, translated into ratings, corporate donations, tax breaks for the wealthy. i honestly used to believe in this country. anymore, i just hope daily, that this is the day it all comes crashing down. the stock market, everything, and we can have a big civil war and from the remnants, start over. honestly, i am totally comfortable with the idea of chaos in america.

It is pathetic to see CNN obviously putting Glenn Beck on air just to get higher ratings. It's all about money. We need a huge turnaround in this country. Environmental energy changes and priorities are TRULY the way to go to get this country turned around, morally, fiscally and humanely.

There seems to be some sort of competition going on among the pimps for theofascism, to see who can be tagged the most disgusting. So we get Andy Coulter coming out as an anti-Semite (like that's a surprise, of course), Limbaugh making fun of sick kids, Beck telling San Diego it deserved to burn. Do these folks care that even conservative Americans do not share these views? Apparently not.

Just don't leave him in a room with your
wallet, unattended. That's the REAL freedom
that he's after...so, when did FOX buy CNN?

I believe it is Freedom FROM Want.

But with Beck, maybe Freedom OF Want is more precise.

CNN has become the nation's biggest broadcasting disappointment.

Giving a forum to Glenn Beck and his nasty little slanted subjects may have the CNN programmers rubbing their grubby little hands with glee as they watch ratings climb over the Headline News programming it had before, but the long term cost of respect and reliability has completely eroded.

Interesting that in order to compete with the disreputable conservative Fox, rather than offering something different, CNN went with something that was equally disreputable

Has anyone ever thought of giving, say, Randi Rhodes a shot on TV?

Randi Rhodes Robertson was in the Movie "Left of the Dial" about the financial failure of the original Air America,
before the Green family bought the franchise.
She looked good in the movie. Not a news bimbo, but not as decrepit as Barbara Walters or Oprah Winfree either. She could succeed on TV.
Nice hair.

You should have heard his BS yesterday on his radio show. First time Ive had the misfortune to hear it, and I swear he is on Crack or back on the bottle. Saying things like Americans are the Supreme Race put here by God to make the world a better place, and the UN is trying to take over the world using movies like Happy Feat, Lions for Lambs and Superman?? Oh yeah, and he said something about All US College students being the same as the Nazi Brown Shirts, and that Political Correctness policy was actually created by the Communist.

All this and more in the whole 5 minutes I had to hear him. He is like a ADDHD crack whore. Insane, but sounds perfect for a republican talking head. He is the one and only SPIN BECK!

Beck is a Mormon, he believes Mormons are the supreme race. It goes with the magic underwear.
