It was, at once, the most unanticipated and head-scratching moment during Tuesday's presidential debate at Drexel University. Rep. Dennis Kucinich, D-OH, was pestered by moderator Tim Russert regarding the congressman's claimed sighting of a UFO while staying with writer Shirley MacLaine. Kucinich stood by the previous account (watch video), asking Russert to repeat the fact that 14 percent of Americans claim to have seen a UFO at some point in their life.

One might think that the Ohioan's candidness earned him the endorsement of the community of extraterrestrial believers. But not so fast.

2007-10-31-kucin.jpgAccording to Stephen Bassett, Executive Director of the Paradigm Research Group and chief lobbyist of the Extraterrestrial Phenomena Political Action Committee, Kucinich isn't even the preferred Democratic vice presidential candidate. That honor goes to Gov. Bill Richardson of New Mexico. As for Bassett's choice for president, Sen. Hillary Clinton inhabits the mothership.

"Hillary has a connection there because there is no way she and John Podesta [Bill Clinton's former chief of staff, who has advocated declassifying relevant government records] weren't fully aware of it. She knows this issue is not trivial," said Bassett. "Of the 20 candidates the two who have clearly identifiable connections to the issue are those two [Clinton and Richardson]. Kucinich is number three."

For extraterrestrial enthusiasts, the issue of prime importance is ending the UFO truth embargo, something Bassett believes the next Democratic president will do "so that the cover up doesn't become their cover up." He acknowledges that his organization's political support doesn't translate into campaign donations, or, for that matter, many earth-bound votes. And he laments the fact that Republicans - with Sen. McCain, R-AZ, being the possible exception - aren't more "out there" on "exopolitics." Mostly, however, he has little patience for the theory that a candidate who addresses Martian-themed issues will lose any and all political credibility.

"I don't care if they can or can't win. I'm sick and tired of candidates who say I can't talk about this or that because I want to be president. That's bull****," said Bassett. "They want to lead the free world, but they can't talk about an issue of that implication?"

A Clinton/Richardson ticket? Saw that one coming a mile away. This represents the death knell for fair trade. Richardson is winning support based on his pledge to pull US troops out of Iraq. But, his position on trade is being ignored. Not good, everyone, not good.

The Kucinich rally I attended had about 600 enthusiastic people present, yet was mentioned on only one local tv news program. I was very impressed with his sincerity and easy manner. He handled every question well, even when the question was intended to be provocative. It's clear that he understands the needs of the people and how government could help ease those needs. He also understands the benefit to the country of instituting his policies. One man said he has a son in Iraq, and that Dennis is the candidate to vote for if you care about our troops. Another man was from Ohio, and he thanked Dennis for standing up against the big business take-over attempt of the local utilities. His integrity and vision cost Dennis his position as mayor at the time, but he's since been proven right on the issue and is appreciated for it. I love that he's impatient with the usual political stance of having to make improvements in baby steps. And, to my knowledge, he's the only one of our candidates who's had to live in a car as a kid. If you haven't read his positions, I recommend checking out his web site.

The next evening I went to see Elizabeth Kucinich speak. That event received no local tv coverage. E. was intelligent, exceptionally knowledgable - especially about the global economy, warm, funny and pragmatic. My 86 year old mother went with me to hear Elizabeth speak. After the speech Mom went up to talk with E., who then proceeded to walk and talk with Mom all the way to the parking lot. Needless to say, after reading about Kucinich's programs and meeting E., he has my Mom's vote. Mine too. Mom wears her Kucinich button every day so people will ask her about him. She and I urge everyone who isn't passionate about another candidate to vote for Dennis. If the numbers are high enough it may make the Democratic nominee reconsider his/her positions.

Dennis Kucinich's an honest man. How refreshing it would be to have such a President.

The evidence for UFOs, per se, is overwhelming. Like Kucinich, I have seen one at fairly close range and it was an awesome sight.

What intelligence operates them and why they wont "land on the white house lawn" (like many sceptics argue they should if they are really here), is a great mystery which probably says more about our ways than "theirs". I mean anyone capable of reading a historical book on UFOs (or documents released under FOIA) will discover that all over the world, Air Forces have tried interceptiong them, with little if any success.

I think it's good that this subject comes up, becuse it's very well documented, that the US military and the intelligence community has lied consistently since the late 40's about its' interest in UFOs.
I would, however, like to add that Stephen Bassett and the Paradigm Group, despite their good intentions, really aren't the right people to bring about disclosure. I was at their conference and it was a decidedly mixed bag, with rather lofty notions of exopolitics. Daniel Sheehan and Richard Dolan were exellent but others (incl. ufo-celeb steven greer) did not impress me at all. They came close in 2001, but they blew it in my opinion.

How many times is the "Chattering Class" going to do this to us? They are in large part responsible for Bush and the invasion of Iraq. Look how they helped the swiftboating of Kerry by endless repetion of the lies without comment and listened noncommitally while their guests told lies that everyone knew were not true. The Corporate Whores are at it again. Hillary did not contradict herself. We may not have liked what she said about licenses for illegals but she had a consistant opinion. Look at the transcript. I lost respect for Obama, Dodd and Edwards when they jumped on Hillary for that one. Believe me they will try to kill any Dem who has any chance to win.
Chris Matthews has resumed his mouth-frothing, knuckle- dragging rants about Hillary.
As far as I'm concerned, Fox Noise and Rush have more integrity than Timmie and Tweety.

First of all, UFO's are not a big issue; the "aliens" will show themselves when they are ready, and believe me, there are aliens already here. Most of them are not here to harm us, and our government assuredly knows about them. What if they exist in another dimension? What if the ufo's are only brief sojourns into the 3rd dimension? There's so much we don't know about...like physics, for example. These "aliens" obviously have more advanced technology...but it's not really something to worry about. Just keep an open mind; there's so much life out there.

If both Kucinich and Paul lose there respective parties nominations, which is likely at this point, why not run an independent ticket of Kucinich/Paul or vice versa. I think it could win, if they could be gotten on enough State ballots and would take a lot of votes from both parties. I would sure as hell work and vote for it. Its something to consider.

A UFO is not necessarily an object from an alien civilization.
Maybe it was just a flying object that is UNIDENTIFIED!

Maybe what Kuch saw was god riding his chariot through the sky.

In reality, many credible people have admitted to seeing UFOs. As we know Jimmy Carter did (and he was a commander of one of our nuclear subs before becoming president), several of our Apollo astronauts reported seeing them, and many commercial pilots have as well.

How about Kuch's wife becoming First Lady no matter who gets elected. That's something I could support.

Mr. Russert, seeing UFO's is small potatoes compared to being star-struck by the lies of the Bush administration which capitalizes on apocalyptic mythology.

Corporate America says that only the Corporate sponsored candidates can win. No surprise there! The Corporate Media tells us that Dennis Kucinich cannot win, they also say that Dennis is only drawing two or three percent in the polls. If that is the case then why would Tim Russert of NBC News, bring up the UFO question ? It was clear to me that his intention was to embarrass Mr Kucinich. I thought that the congressman handled it very well. Russert admitted that fourteen percent of Americans have seen UFOs. Fourteen percent of Americans equals about forty two million people. I would like to know how many have reported seeing them, and how many others have seen UFOs and felt no responsibility to do so, or decided that reporting them would bring ridicule. Are these forty two million people all nut cases ? Who are they ? Are they organized ? Why do these people all see the same things ? Should we continue to laugh at people who have seen UFOs, until fifty one percent have seen them, or should we continue until it reaches one hundred percent ?
If you see the replay on MSNBC, you will notice that they cut off the segment, just before their boy, Russert mentioned the 14% *** (42 Million Americans) *** WOW

Russert looked the fool with the UFO question and Dennis answered it quite well. He did say "What we are talking about here is a UFO, and it was just that, an UNIDENTIFIED flying object."

And what a bunch of clowns, not asking Dennis any questions for 20+ minutes and that's the question they gave him. Russert showed that he can be mean-spirited and malicious when such serves his own needs. He certainly is not anywhere near an unbiased reporter of the news.

The guy has no intergrity. To make a mockery of that man on national TV. Shame on him. He really looked foolish afterward and I suspect he got a lot of flak [as opposed to giggles of approval] for coming across as a condescending prick.

And for the record [and this has not been told to but three or so people in 27 years], plus this is the net, so what the hell, in 1978 I was asleep in bed with my then-girlfriend.

About 3:00 am I heard outside and overhead some type of UFO. It was not a helicopter or plane [being a pilot I know what those sound like].

As stupid as this sounds, it sounded just like the UFOs we see in movies [whirring, spinning, throbbing, vibrating sound for lack of a better description].

The sound became louder and louder until it seemed directly over my roof. It then decreased in sound as it went farther away.

And I tell you it was friggin scary as hell. I was so scared I did not dare look outside. After the sound subsided my girlfriend asked "Did you hear that?" So that confirmed I was not dreaming. She said it sounded like some kind of "saucer."

I've never forgotten that and IMHO people who think we are the only living beings in the universe are stupid. I mean, have you disbelievers seen pics of how many galaxies are out there?

And you should remember, we still drive vehicles that are propelled by gasoline engines turning pieces of rubber on a road.

Edwards hit some good pitches around the park last night, but face it folks......he's a lawyer. Don't get me wrong, Not all Lawyers are Schmucks (but all Schmucks are lawyers?nah)
BUT, Washington,D.C. is awash in lawyers and THOSE lawyers, have made THOSE laws to conveniently pad the nests of ALL THOSE cat-birds. THE LAST thing this country needs is another Wealthy lawyer padding his own, and all his lawyer-friends nests.

Every special interest group in this country has it's high paid lobbyist expect one........ "We the People".
Dennis Kucinich is THE ONLY candidate who knows that the destruction of the Constitution means the destruction of 'We the People'. He is offering to be THE top lobbyist for the average, tax paying, American citizen.
It may very well be, that Mr. Kucinich is OUR LAST HOPE at preserving the Constitution and subsequently, "We the People".

On all substantial issues Kucinich has long been so very, very obviously the best Democratic candidate - was in 2004; is now too.

But let's get to the trivial stuff: he was great on Colbert and his wife was great on the Daily Show.

SO! let's vote for him in the primaries. C'mon, do it. Do it. DO IT!! Y'all can always wuss out later and vote for whatever slimeball actually picks up the democratic nomination when November 2008 comes around. Deal?

Russert came off as the clown, not Kucinich. What a moronic question.
Kucinich and Dodd are looking better and better. Notice everyone else's hand went up when asked if they would oppose decriminalizing marijuana. Also, Dennis wants to end NAFTA and GATT and give everyone healthcare. He wants to end corporate influence in our government. He scares the hell out of them. He's the only real man of the people! Vote for Dennis!!!

My jaw dropped when I heard that question. That was an obvious attempt to marginalize Kucinich and make him appear ridiculous, a la the Dean Scream. They are afraid of Kucinich because he speaks for quite a few of us. I know quite a few folks who love Dennis but don't think he speaks for "middle America". Geez, he's the only one who truly is speaking for middle america! Anyone who espouses any populist issues is immediately labeled a leftist and a kook. What's radical about being against corporate control of our country? Or standing up for labor? I know who I am, and he speaks for me! I'll vote for Dennis long before I'd vote for the media-ordained Hillary or Obama! Why didn't he ask Hillary why she is such a corporate whore, or if Obama loves watermelon? No class, no style...no surprise. SHDD.
