Limited immunity has been routinely offered to private security contractors involved in shootings in Iraq, State Department officials said Tuesday, denying such actions jeopardized criminal prosecution of Blackwater USA guards accused of killing 17 Iraqi civilians.

State Department spokesman Sean McCormack declined to discuss specifics of the agency's role in the investigation, but said any immunity deals should not stop the Justice Department from prosecuting.

I realize that I'm no legal expert. But the legality of contractual immunity for murder doesn't smell all that kosher. But if Bush says it is, I reckon we must believe it is. Don't you believe that there are illegal WMDs in Iraq? And in Iran! And don't you believe (with Mukasey) that a president (or Bush at any rate) can break laws if he wishes, so long as he says it's for national security?
And maybe, after all, contractual immunity for murder is kosher.
Has anyone asked Mukasey?

Yes, after a while, "High Crimes" become routine, don't they?

Just another day in the office, right?

That's alot of consolation to both the deceased, their families, and the American conscience. As a result, we're spending tax dollars to murder and alienate people, and then we absolve them of any wrongdoing? Oh, we pay the families of the deceased a pittance. Did I miss anything?

Screw the mercenaries. Give them two choices: waive the immunity and face trial in the US or try to use that immunity as their defense in front of an Iraqi tribunal.

The U.S. does not OWN Iraq contrary to what the insane out-of-control administration may think.

If Iraq says these paid criminals are in violation of their laws, so be it.

They are just "door-shakers" aka "Renta-cops" with big guns.

Nothing more.

Murdering innocent civilians in a drunken killing spree is "routine" for contractors.

Which is what really happened.

May be routine, but that doesn't make it right.
