Rep. Duncan Hunter, R-Calif., the House Armed Services Committee's top Republican, said he intends to suggest that diplomats who refuse to serve in Iraq be replaced by wounded veterans.

"Let's replace these reluctant Nellies with America's finest citizens," he said in a statement. "Our wounded warriors will serve our country efficiently, effectively and with undying patriotism."

My people we must continue to stand as one. For as you all know it is together that we are most powerful. It was together that our people fought, went to jail, and even died for our sake. So it is now more than ever that we must stand taller than ever, and keep the fight that they started alive." "

But, but, but diplomacy!

I thought that was the libs answer in Iraq. You know, diplomacy is the solution.

Seems to me that the HuffPoer's should be disappointed in these mighty State Department "Ben Franklins" who are evidently "not up to the task."

I mean if "diplomacy is the solution," one would think these boobs would be "chomping at the bit" to go.

Hell, they could become another "Joseph Wilson."

Do you agree with State Department's new policy that diplomats must serve in Iraq, or be fired? http://www.youpolls.com/details.asp?pid=870

Yeah, right, send the poor, mutilated, PTSD-traumatized right back to Iraq to risk their lives yet again. Still, any one of them would be a hell of a lot better at diplomacy than any Bush-worshipping administration flunky currently in office.

mellene is so right! Enough is enough, trying to pound square pegs into round holes. W thinks if the hammer is big enough and the force is sufficient, anything is possible! I also like Duncan's "undying patriotism". Sounds like perhaps we need to staff those State Dept. positions with zombies!

I cannot believe that Rush, Hannity, O'Reilly, Coulter, Malkin, Matthews, Russert, Wolf, and the rest of the chickenhawks have not volunteered their services to help out the State Department in it's time of need.

Actually Coulter and Malkin should be sent to Iran to "service" the Republican Guard. Of course Rush would volunteer to go with them for a chance to "interview" some Iranian children during his down time.

If it's a death sentence for the diplomats, imagine what it's been for an ordinary soldier. This administration needs to rethink using guns and bombs to solve our problems.

MR. DUNCAN HUNTER,
WHY are you looking for wounded men or waman who have beaten the odds of death just to sent them into harms way again.
aAS for the people who refuss to go to work in IRAQ they should be fired.
AS for sending soldiers wounded soldiers because they are as you call them heros, why don't you and your staff give up your seat and go work in Iraq.

....." IF YOUR SO EAGGER TO SEND OTHERS "....

.." MAYBE YOU & YOUR STAFF SHOULD VOLUNTEER ".

My husband has just been identified for one of the Iraq positions. He has no Arabic language training and has never been to the Middle East. Neither have any of the other FSOs he has spoken to who have also been identified.

He is a career officer, not a political appointee and has been in public service for twenty years. FSOs are not trying to shirk their responsibity but are questioning their ability to conduct diplomacy during a war. How many of the posters here would want to be sent to a war zone to live in a container (most of the jobs the State Department needs to fill are not in the Green Zone but are in temporary camps in the provinces), unarmed, with less than two weeks of training and be protected by hired mercenaries?

This entire discourse makes me wonder if there remain any true believers. This entire story is perhaps the biggest indictment of the failed Iraq policy to date.
