Television and movie screen writers said Thursday they would go on strike for the first time in nearly 20 years in a dispute over royalties.

Four writers told The Associated Press that Writers Guild of America President Patric Verrone made the announcement in a closed-door session, drawing loud cheers from the crowd.

You mean the creative minds that come up with such classic dialogue such as...

"Enough is enough! I have had it with these motherfucking snakes on this motherfucking plane!"

...are going on strike??

Is this a good or a bad thing for the film industry?

the silver lining of the writers' strike:

FOX will have to report the news.

I understand that this is mainly about increasing the writer royalty on DVD sales 4 cents; from 4cents to 8 cents.
If this is true then the companies are complete assholes.
Increase the price 4 cents. hell i think anyone who creates something should always get the lions share of the profits.
Yellow dog contracts should be illegal.
If we reward creation there will be more of it. We really need some creative thinking these days.

Does anyone think it's ironic that you're blathering about what writers should get paid on a site that doesn't pay its writers?

Just a thought.

COOL!
I look forward to better movies. Usually, it's the writers and directors that make them suck.

It sure ain't the film crews, and it's usually not even the actors (unless Keanu Reeves or Chuck Norris are starring).

hmmm Looks like Bushco can't even set up proper security for nuclear power plants. Guess they are too concerned about Iran.

i think they should all just blog on huffpo for free...

just like music, writing should be given away for free as a means to other revenue streams...

the writers could make money off of t-shirt sells or live-writing gigs...

fantabulous-tastic-ness

Good for the writers. It's about time they get their deserved pay:

- "Reality" TV writers
- More money on sales of DVDs
- Sales on digital media

etc. Movie studios and producers need to start spreading the wealth a bit to those who make it possible to even create and sell those products. I'm sick of the people on top keeping everything for themselves.

STICK IT TO THEM, WRITERS! FINALLY! A HARD UNITED FRONT! GO GO GO!

Go out and read a good book already folks.

They will figure it out. But until then do something useful folks.

Good thing I surf the Net and watch films instead of watching TV.

I'm sympathetic to the writers, but the garbage that Hollywood puts out really tests my patience.

First the writers, next the actors then the technicians.

How about a permanent shutdown.

No more TV.

Perfect.

Like I commented on another article here, this strike doesn't concern me at all. There is not much on television that is even worth watching.
PBS is the only station that broadcasts programs with quality, besides for maybe 3 shows on network tv.
I'm even cancelling my cable...why pay that kind of money every month when I never use it? There is NOTHING of quality on!!!
I think it would be great if everyone, after a long writer's strike, would put the remote down and pick up a book.
As a poster above stated: 95% of books that come out now are crap too, but if you would look in the CLASSICS section of your local library or bookstore you would find enough material to keep you occupied for eternity!!

Yeah, but will anyone notice?

Perhaps this will entice people to seek other forms of entertainment media (read: books).

Of course, like everything, 95% of books are crap as well.

and those of us in the SAG support them.
I wonder if the Guilds will be the reminder to this nation that unions are for people? That is why so many companies wish to destroy unions. They have an organization that isn't corporate. Many voices instead of only one voice, rotten from corruption
