On Sept. 19, 2001, J. Cofer Black, the director of the CIA's Counterterrorist Center, summoned two agents to his office.

"I want bin Laden's head shipped back in a box filled with dry ice," Black told them, one of the agents later reported. "I want to be able to show bin Laden's head to the president."

Black - who is now Mitt Romney's chief adviser on counterterrorism and national security - is a brash and tough-talking veteran spy. He is also controversial. Black is widely credited with trying to warn then-National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice about Al Qaeda in the summer of 2001, but an internal CIA report last summer criticized his counterterrorist center, saying it lacked an effective strategy before Sept. 11.

Now Black is facing more scrutiny for his current role as a top executive of Blackwater Worldwide, the international security firm whose alleged killing of 17 Iraqis prompted a congressional investigation and a demand from the Iraqi government that the firm withdraw from the country.

Romney has called the allegations against Blackwater troubling, but said he is waiting for a State Department investigation to be completed before making an official pronouncement on the firm. But he proudly invokes Black's name on the campaign trail, mentioning his 28 years in the CIA to lend himself credibility on counterterrorism issues.

CIA career up to 1999
At the CIA, Black trained for the clandestine service and volunteered for Africa due to his childhood experiences there. During his CIA career, Black served a total of six foreign tours in field management positions.

Initially, he worked as a case officer in Lusaka, Zambia during the Rhodesian War next door. He transferred to Somalia for two years during a Cold-War-inspired conflict between Ethiopians and Somalis in the sands of the Ogaden desert. He worked in South Africa during the racist apartheid regime's dirty war against guerrilla movements representing the black majority. While assigned to Kinshasa, Zaire, Black was involved in the Reagan administration's covert action program to arm anticommunist guerrillas in neighboring Angola.

In 1993, Black transferred from London, England to Khartoum, Sudan, where he served as CIA Station Chief until 1995. This was at a low point in U.S.-Sudanese relations, particularly over the latter country's sponsorship of terror and the harboring of Al Qaeda founder Osama bin Laden. Black oversaw the collection of Human Intelligence (HUMINT) on terrorist cells and support structures, and toward the end of his tenure, he was apparently targeted by Al Qaeda for assassination. Black was also responsible for the collection of intelligence that led directly to the 1994 capture of the terrorist known as Carlos the Jackal.

In 1995, Black was named the Task Force Chief in the Near East and South Asia Division. From June 1998 through June 1999, he served as the Deputy Chief of the Latin America Division.[2]

[edit] Director of the CIA's Counterterrorist Center, 1999-2002

In June 1999 CIA chief George Tenet named Cofer Black director of the CIA's Counterterrorist Center (CTC).[3] In this capacity, Black served as the CIA Director's Special Assistant for Counterterrorism as well as the National Intelligence Officer for Counterterrorism.[4] Black's promotion was a part of Tenet's grand "Plan" for dealing with al-Qaeda. Black was the operational chief in charge of this effort.

The tragedy of Blackwater will haunt this nation for many years. This era of American politics is shaping up as a dark moment in our history - Future historians will struggle with this reality.

If America were to become a pure police-terror state, Romney would make the best Stalin...

I love this blog.

Everything is ALWAYS some sort of conspiracy. Everyone of you "9-11 truthers" could give John Grisham and Tom Clancy a run for their money if you decided to dedicate your time to writing spy novels.

Keep it up guys, because I'm always up for a good laugh!

A short ime ago Romney appeared on Good Morning America and said that the Democrats setting a date for the withdrawal of troops from Iraq would be akin to the congress withdrawing American forces during WW2 in Europe if they did not cross the Rhine by a certain date. I didn't beleve what I heard. This was an ignorant comment to make trying to compare two different situations. WE have sorrowfully endured one ignoramus in the White House, we don't need another.

Sounds like a nice guy! I believe that Stalin kept Hitler's skull on his desk. Do you think the President would want to keep the head, once he had seen it? Do you think that he would either pickle it or have a taxidermist do some magic and have it mounted on a wall plaque. Either way, it would be a great conversation piece with an underlying message about "messin with the Good Ole US of A"!

Heads are going to roll somewhere. It won't be bin Laden's head so much as ours. The "real enemy" is those Liberal-Islamofascists. We like our woman too liberated!
