Rudy The Water-Boarder?

More from Rudy Giuliani's interview today with Al Hunt, which will air this weekend on Bloomberg TV:

MR. HUNT: Let me try a couple of national security questions. Waterboard. You have noted the Congress has not outlawed it, and that you say it's not necessarily torture; it depends on the circumstances. John McCain says you are wrong and he says you haven't served in the military and have no experience in the conduct of warfare. Do you know more about torture than John McCain?

MR. GIULIANI: I can't say that I do but I do know a lot about intensive questioning and intensive questioning techniques. After all, I have had a different experience than John. John has never been - he has never run city, never run a state, never run a government. He has never been responsible as a mayor for the safety and security of millions of people, and he has never run a law enforcement agency, which I have done.

Now, intensive questioning works. If I didn't use intensive questioning, there would be a lot of mafia guys running around New York right now and crime would be a lot higher in New York than it is. Intensive question has to be used. Torture should not be used. The line between the two is a difficult one.

So which specific techniques did Giuliani use? And can he point to a specific case where "intensive questioning" made the difference?

The New York Yankees dominated the sport of baseball while Rudy was their mayor. His attendance at their games and his uncompromising support lead the team to both American League and World Series Championships. While Rudy was just starting out doing the mayor thing, as New York's mayor before annointing himself America's mayor, Rudy frequently reminded New Yorkers that he always supported the Yankees. He frequently told a story about how, as an only child with a penchant for opera, he was beaten up in his Brooklyn Dodger-loving neighborhood because he insisted on wearing a Yankee uniform to taunt Dodger fans -even though he was the only Yankee fan in the neighborhood. All those working class union loving Democrats from the boroughs of New York got their comeuppance when Rudy and the Yankees started winning. It will be pay back time for all of America's working class union loving Democrats when Rudy becomes the world's mayor. He'll go to lots of Yankee games in lots of cities. Maybe he'll see to it that the Yankees never lose another game.

Giuliani may not have pulled the trigger or shoved the stick, but his torture permitting attitude sent a signal and caused behavior that didn't preceed or follow his awful mayoralty. A vote for him is a vote for the devil. I curse myself for voting for him when he got elected, but at least I didn't do it a second time. Only Edwards or Obama might rescue us, but the real choices are Gravel or Kucinich on one ticket and Ron Paul on the other. Don't settle if you don't have to!
