Micky Padilla of Porterville and his family were about 20 minutes away from reaching a baptism when they heard the sound of metal screeching.

Padilla hit the brakes when a trailer hauling turkeys swerved in front of them, sending feathers across the windshield. They rear-ended a Nissan Maxima and the car stopped next to the center divide.

Remember the Police? No, not your friendly
neighborhood donut-snarfing public tax burden,
the Police, the music group. It was put very
well in one song, forget the name of it, but
the verse went like this: "Packed like lemmings
into shiny metal boxes, contestants in a
suicidal race". Welcome to the age of the
Unintended Consequences, that's one thing
that Albore talked about that I thought
there was some merit in, here we are in
a world of 6.6 billion people where all bets
are off, a massive global cash-grab, and
chances are it's gonna get Ugly at some point,
and, well, on top of all of that, speed kills.
Moral of the story? Slow the hell down, don't
tailgate, and park unless you HAVE to drive.

There is nothing to say. Cars have gotten safer and safer over the years and drivers more insane. I've been on that road and even in bright sunlight it's terrifying. Twenty miles over the speed limit is for chickens, and the truckers don't know what slow down means. I think the CHP just goes and has coffee and a donut because if they pulled over everyone speeding, the countryside would be a parking lot. Latte in one hand, cell in the other and a lead foot. Look Ma......! Fog? We don't care about no stinkin' fog!

Why do I only see SUVs and big rigs in the picture? Oh wait, a passenger vehicle is UNDER the big rig. Yikes!

Here in Texas, ice and fog on the roads is lethal, but rain means go ten miles an hour, except for that ONE guy in the Yukon who can't believe that we mere mortals are in his way.

UP NORTH IT'S ALMOST WINTER AND SOON THERE WILL BE MANY DEMOLITION-DERBYS UP THERE, PEOPLE JUST CANT REMEMBER THOSE 2 SIMPLE WORDS: "SLOW DOWN" ALSO WHENEVER I'M ON A 75MPH FREEWAY, WHAT IS IT WITH THESE LEFT LANE ONLY DRIVERS, I SEE IT ALL THE TIME, FOR ME I HAVE FUN PISSING OFF THE SPEED FREAKS WITH 3 THINGS, NO JACKRABBIT STARTS, NO TAILGATING, AND DRIVE THE SPEED LIMIT, THESE 3 THINGS DRIVE THEM CRAZY!

Eighteen (20%) of the vehicles were 'big rigs'. Need any more proof that an overwhelming number of commercial truck drivers should be pulled off the road permanently?

Fog does not cause accidents. Careless drivers driving too fast to see within their stopping distance cause accidents, and truck drivers are the world's most notorious on-your-bumper drivers.

1. My dad used to tell me about "pinwheel" accidents where a two-directional road would be fogged up and people would drive into the fog from both directions at full speed until the crash crawled out of the fog. This was about sixty years ago - nobody has learned a blamed thing except to put in a median.

2. I see overhead highway signage for ballgames, tunnel backups, and the like. Couldn't the big highways in the few "tule"-susceptible areas get STOP NOW - STOP HERE signs that would turn on at the first indication of stopped vehicles in fog? Both optical absorption gauges for fog sensors and doppler radar for stoppage sensors exist. Wouldn't it be cheaper to prevent death/injury/insurance loss/work loss than to live with consequences of these predictable messes? Is it a tragedy if it's preventable? Is it a disaster if you knew better but did nothing?

3. Hats off to JScott and the others here who advocate STAY OUT OF LEFT LANE EXCEPT TO PASS.

the Constitution sez it's my American right to have my cellphone and triple latte while drivin' my SUV. if u get in my way, too freakin' bad. we know that roadkill is good fertilizer for plants by the interstate. God not man or woman created fog so that is not my issue. perhaps Rev. Ted can help u, pray with u, to get u thru this. now, just get down on your knees.....

I have driven on 99 under those conditions and I was surprised that drivers were STILL zoomin along at up to 80 mph in the SLOW LANE. Yup drivers HAVE TO GET OFF THE CELL PHONE AND OTHER ELECTRONIC DEVICES AND OTHER DIVERSIONS SLOW DOWN AND PAY ATTENTION!!!!
DON'T TAILGATE AND USE YOUR TURN SIGNALS!!!!!
I read an article by a RACE CAR DRIVER and his method of driving on freeways is to get in the empty spaces in between crowds of cars AND STAY THERE, whenver possible I ALWAYS DO THAT.
The rule in Ca. is 'slower traffic keep right' unlike the authobahn where the rule (and in some locations in the US-particularly eastern toll roads) is left lane is for passing only.

You have to drive as fast as you can when its foggy, so you can get out of the dangerous driving conditions as soon as possible.

Driving in the I-5 tule fog is a bad deal in general. Sometimes it comes up unpredicted. Some folks drive too fast, take chances. Often, there is no place to get off and wait. And these pile-up are like the fires, they happen every year.

Now that the population in California has gone out of control the state has become downright dangerous.

I really wish all the people who came here over the past 25 years would go home, back to the American mid-West, Mexico, Central America, Asia and from where ever else you came? Please?

Y'all are killing us.

Clearly the state is over populated and has refused to address very obvious and clear problems with its infrastructure

Airplanes are not allowed the take off or land in severe fog. I have been stranded several times at fog bound airports.

Using air safety as a guide and given the level of traffic on the roadways now, I've got to ask, why aren't roads closed in periods of heavy fog? To me driving in fog is more dangerous than driving on ice or snow.
