AP:

Stephen Colbert has dropped his bid for the White House.

His announcement came after the South Carolina Democratic Executive Council voted last week to keep the host of "The Colbert Report" off the state's primary ballot. The vote was 13-3.

"Although I lost by the slimmest margin in presidential election history _ only 10 votes _ I have chosen not to put the country through another agonizing Supreme Court battle," Colbert said Monday in a statement. "It is time for this nation to heal."

Not that it matters as pretty much nobody is going to read this, but the problem here is not Stephen Colbert. It's that an American born citizen over 35 isn't be allowed by one of the two major political parties to run for President.

When I was growing up I remember hearing in school how anyone can grow up to be President. It's simply not true.

Regardless if you believe it's a joke or not anyone who meets the requirements should be able to run. And the fact is that Colbert was polling higher than many of the actual Democratic candidates both locally and nationally. He may have been a joke, but he was a viable joke and he has every right to run for office as much as Mike Gravel, Chris Dodd and Dennis Kuchinch. We all no they wont win the nomination, but they can run anyway because this is America.

If a guy with his own TV show, corporate sponsors, a native son of the state, a key to a city in the state and a day named after him, a bridge in his name in Turkey, a Ben and Jerry ice cream flavor named after him, and a NY Times bestseller currently at #1 then what chance do you or I or our children have to run against the established elite in this country?

Anyone can run for President in America. It's what makes this country so great. Really?

I think most (if not all) state ballots allow for "write-in" votes. I expect to write in "Stephen Colbert" on the Republican primary ballot on February whatever. Truly, could he be any worse than the people running in the Republican camp? Every single one of them would have us bombing Iran within the first year after Bush leaves (if he doesn't beat them to it).

Pogo & Pat Paulsen [sic] have morphed into Steve C. They are foundly remembered. One won't be able to say that of Perot, Stassen, Reagan & the newbie, Thompson. Steve accidently or not tried to change America for the better; he may have done so.

It is too bad that Mr. Colbert dropped his Presidential bid. I know he did the whole thing in jest, but he actually would have made a great President. But then again, maybe he was put on this Earth to make us laugh...and that he does well.

Let the bit die, ok? Also, smart move to put the Best of DVD out just before the strike.

The real reason Colbert bailed was the writers strike.

Maybe Fred Thompson should be reconsidering his presidential bid as well...

Great. Another person I would have voted for drops out of the race. Ross Perot, where are you? :-D

Now the field is clear for the serious candidates. You know, the ones who all agree (seriously) they can't commit to getting out of Iraq by 2013. You know, the ones who have legally changed their names to Nine Eleven. You know, the ones who vote to invade Iraq and Iran and deny that's what they meant. You know, the ones who talk against torture because they were tortured and then vote for torturers. You know, the ones who ran as being more pro gay than Ted Kennedy and now oppose gays. You know, the ones who spoke against the Iraq resolution in 2002 and then didn't vote on an invade Iran resolution 5 years later. You know, the one who saw the light on the Iraq vote and then was part of a 92-3 majority to fund Bush's 08 partial funding request without restrictions. You know, the one who still thinks there were WMDs in Iraq.

Yeah, it's good a comedian like Colbert is out of the race so we can have some serious discource.

I intend to write in Colbert/Putin anyway. But wait, I couldn't do that anyway because I'm not a South Carolina voter.

Down with Doritos, up with bears. Potato chips forever.

Well, I thought it was fun, but also he's kind
of Sideshow Bob. I do think he has the ability
to speak well, I think being articulate is
an important attribute that candidates should
have, but most likely his 'campaign' was only
a stunt to begin with....

But what about the children? With Colbert out of the race, who'll protect them from the bears?

Shame on SC!

Satire and comedy have no business in politics in a post 9/11 world. The only way any of us will ever survive in this post 9/11 world is to maintain our never-ending vigilance in the ideology of Freedom - foresaking any other distractions which only serve to aid and comfort our enemies.

Stephen Colbert and his ilk think everything is a joke and ripe for parody. If everything is a joke, then nothing is a joke. No joke will ever be funny enough to replace the pure joy that comes from Freedom. Since the purest form of Freedom known to man is allegiance to our beloved President, those who make jokes can and must replace such frivolity with a newfound obedience to all Talking Points issued by our leader.

Irony is a form of weakness. Those who would dare point out the hypocrisy of stressing one viewpoint while not having the perspective to see that very viewpoint applies to them are obvious enemies of Freedom. True Patriots never question their motives and would not dare be so bold as to attempt to think for themselves. They know the best way to further the grand cause of Freedom is to shut up and do as they are told.

Stephen Colbert, like all other fools and jesters, will eventually learn to shut up and obey like all other true Patriots. Unless all of America learns that the only way we all will ever truly be free is to obey without question, then we will all die. You will not all die laughing, but unless you all obey you will all die nonetheless.

Too Bad, because Steven Colbert would be a better
President than any of the leading candidates. I guess Colbert would rather be right then President. It shows how the parties damage democracy.

Too bad.
I would really have liked to seen how he would stack up against the real candidates.

One thing for sure, he would be a better president than Bush.
