Confirming its long-rumored foray into the mobile market, Google said Monday it is developing a free cell phone software package so the Internet search leader can more easily peddle ads and services to people who aren't in front of a PC.

While the announcement ended months of speculation about the Mountain View-based company's cellular ambitions, the first phones equipped with Google's so-called "software stack" still won't be available until the second half of 2008.

Combine this with the new RF spectrum that will be available next year and you have the end of cells phones as we know them now.

If all those GPhones can be connected wirelessly, and the whole thing paid for by ad revenue, then goodbye monthly cell phone charges and long-term contracts.

Just like the old TV networks, it'll be free as long as you can stand the ads.

It won't be long before someone gets around the ads being placed on the phone. It will be a challenge for all the hackers.
