Update: Stewart's Rep Denies He's Paying Writers Out Of Pocket During Strike

In a show of solidarity with his fellow scribes, the Daily Show host has told his writing staff that he will cover all their salaries for the next two weeks, according to a well-placed source. He has also vowed to do the same for writers on The Colbert Report. A Comedy Central spokesman referred my inquiry about this to Stewart's personal publicist, who has yet to respond.

Stewart's intention, says the source, is to ensure his writers will face no financial hardship should the strike, which kicked off at 3 a.m. local time, conclude within that time frame.

With Jon Stewart in reruns, where will we get the news?

Corporate "news" will of course take the side of the show owners and continue to broadcast Republican talking points without challenge. We count on Stewart to point to the ridiculousness of the official line.

Kudos to Jon Stewart for his talking truth show and his support of his writing staff. If writers were more valued, they would have an acceptable contract and would not be on strike. Instead, the greedy media conglomerates pretend to be oh so poor while stuffing gobs of money in their pockets.

Stewart is a class act. His efforts to make sure his writers are covered will insure that when the strike ends his crew will stay with him.
