America To Democrats: Get Aggressive On Iraq

Greg Sargent at TPM Election Central tips us off to a key passage in a new Pew poll, titled "More Favor Dems Getting Tougher on Iraq":

The proportion of Americans saying Democratic leaders in Congress are not going far enough in challenging President Bush's Iraq policies has been increasing fairly steadily since March, when 40% expressed this view; the October figure is 47%. The remainder of the public is divided over whether Democratic leaders have gone too far (21%) or have taken an approach that is about right (23%).

The poll notes that while just 31% approve of Congress' job performance (down 10 points since February), "most Americans (54%) say that they are happy that the Democrats won control of Congress in last year's elections. That represents a modest decline since last November, but positive views of the Democratic congressional victory have remained stable since March. At least in part, this reflects the fact that Republican leaders are blamed about as often as Democratic leaders for Congress' lack of productivity."

Maybe the democrats don't want to win next time around - maybe they just want the republicans to take the fall for what is going to happen in the next few years. These last few weeks sure seem to make it look like the democrats really don't care.

How come the Democratic Leadership can't hear the roar of the public outcry? Why is what they are hearing so far off the mark? When Emanuel goes on CNN and says the mandate of the 2006 vote wasn't to end the war, who is he listening to? That was exactly what the Democrats were given a majority -- however slim -- to do! How do we make these people hear us?

The truth is they would poll Americans with the question:

Do you believe Congress should vote to defund the war?

The answer would be NO!

The average American may not like war, but they do not believe in pulling the rug out from underneath our troops!

Doesn't it ever occur to you that 75% or more of the elected Democrats are complicit regarding Iraq? How can you expect them to do anything when they're Republicans in sheep's clothing?? Don't you understand why they have done nothing in five years?? At least the Republicans are not hypocrites like the Democrats. Lunatics, yes, but not hypocrites. This country is a failed enterprise.

Unless you regularly call Congress, you can't complain about not getting heard. Elections don't come around often enough to be a useful tool when failures stack up as rapidly as they do now. TELL them ON THE PHONE what you want. We can't afford to blow our powder by posting here and then just go on with the day.

Numbers to get started:

- House Judiciary Committee, for Cheney impeachment hearings: (202) 225-3951
- Speaker of the House, Pelosi: (202) 225-0100
- Representative and Senators offices: www.congress.org - enter your zip code.

Just do it. It only takes 2 minutes per call. Repeat a few days later. Repeat for every topic worth standing up for.

NOW you're doing your job as one of "the people" in this imperiled Republic.

The dems and repubs have always differed on basic philosophy of government. Those differences, however, are only apparent during election season. Operationally, there is not a dime's worth of difference between them. Repub George Bush lied us into Iraq. Dem Lyndon Johnson lied us into ground combat in Vietnam (yeah, we were already there, but the lies that led to the Gulf of Tonkin resolution increased our presence massively.)Bush spies on Americans and tries to overthrow foreign governments. J. Edgar Hoover spied on Americans illegally for years under presidents of both parties. John F. Kennedy, the liberal icon, tried desperately along with his brother Bobby to murder Castro. Many foreign leaders have been murdered during CIA engineered coups under presidents of both parties. The reality is, America is run by corporations, which pour money into the politicians pockets, and for which they receive favors, such as the violent overthrow of any democratically elected leader who may frown on foreign corporations controlling his country's resources. America is hated not because we're "free", but because we are truly the evil empire.

By ANDREW TAYLOR
Associated Press Writer
Republicans cried foul Wednesday after Democrats cut money for a fence along the U.S.-Mexico border from a defense spending bill.

The $3 billion in fence money, aimed at seizing "operational control" over the southern border, is likely to pass later in the year as part the Homeland Security Department's spending bill.

The money would pay for additional Border Patrol agents, vehicle barriers, border fencing and observation towers. It also would be used to pursue immigrants who had entered the United States legally but overstayed their visas.

The border security money was included in Bush's broader immigration bill that collapsed in June. It was to be financed by fines and fees on illegal immigrants.

After that measure fell apart, Republicans moved to attach the border security plan to the homeland security measure and succeeded by an 89-1 vote in July.

That vote was so impressive that it became clear that Bush's promised veto of Democrats' homeland security budget would be easily overridden by Republicans eager to demonstrate toughness on immigration.

That led Senate Republicans to add the fence money to the defense spending bill in September.

Democrats stripped the money from the defense bill at a House-Senate negotiating committee Tuesday, leading to an outcry among Republicans.

"It is clear across the country that the American people want to secure our borders first," said Sen. Elizabeth Dole, R-N.C. "They want to enforce our laws. And this really is an amazing thing that's happened today."

The White House has signaled Bush will accept the additional $3 billion, even though it also exceeds his budget.

The border fence idea was the GOP's chief immigration initiative of last year, pushed hard by House conservatives as an alternative to the Senate's immigration bill.

Art 1, Sec 8 of the US Constitution clearly gives the US Congress the power to control the US military. This section does NOT mention the Commander in Chief, it does NOT mention the President. The Republicans completely abrogated their responsibilities with regard to Bush. The Democrats have the legal and constitutional power to stop the war in Iraq.
Why do not they do it.....ever hear of AIPAC??
