Keith Olbermann got a lot of attention for Monday night's "special comment" on waterboarding, in which he described the White House as "a criminal conspiracy to cover the ass of George W. Bush" and told the astonishing tale, first reported by ABC News last week, of former Department of Justice official Daniel Levin. Charged with rewriting the Administration's legal position on torture, Levin actually voluntarily underwent waterboarding in 2004 to better understand the procedure before assessing its legality. Here's what Olbermann said Levin concluded: "Waterboarding, he said, is torture. Legally it is torture. Practically it is torture. Ethically it is torture. And he wrote it down." Then he got fired, naturally.

It's stirring rhetoric from Olbermann, as usual--only it's almost certainly 100 percent not true!

You seem to have forgotten to write the remainder of your article...The part with the facts supporting your claims.

I, like most of the other pro-po's (progressive posters) here, believe waterboarding is torture and should never be aloud. We are a free people and we must live that way--and if necessary, die that way. I would rather a nuclear weapon be exploded in LA, DC, NYC and anywhere else than "torture" a so-called terrorist for some "life-saving" information. We can replace thousands of dead American (so-called) innocents--it's called having babies--but we can't restore our reputation. A true patriot is willing to die for his country, and if it's between waterboarding and all of us dying, we MUST choose dying. Pro-po's unite!

LOL. leave it to another right wing wacko to write about torture and castigating someone who speaks the truth about the subject. Funniest part of this same ole, same ole is that ONCE AGAIN they provide NO DOCUMENTATION to support their accusations.

Figures, it's merely more of the same old clap trap given by yet another partisan hack.

Mr. Cook? What is your drug of choice?
Oxycontin like Rush?
You think water boarding is not torture?
How about thumb screws and the rack?
Electric shocks to your genitals, is that torture?

Will one of you trolls just answer this question:

Why are you so afraid of Bush, Cheney and the Repub party?

I mean, you defend these guys while they are destroying our country and our freedoms. Why do you do this?

Can't you see for yourself that they are just a bunch of bullies trying to take over this country and have us be their slaves?

I just don't understand why the hell you support this administration...

Someone, any troll, just let me and the rest of us know what the deal is!

This was a short and sweet little post. Next time try posting a few facts to back up your analysis.

Can someone tell me who John Cook is and why he is writing for the Huffington Post?

Nitpicking does not equal refutation.

I followed the link and read the article. Levin stated that *what he experienced* was probably torture, and that it *may be illegal* unless some it was being supervised and some very specific guidelines were followed - which is almost certainly never the case.

Clear? Let me sum up:

- saying it *may not* be torture if (x) - is not refuting that it's torture *now*
- deliberately inflicted pain, duress, and fear of imminent loss of life = torture

It's annoying to have to wander into the weeds like this, but so be it.

Why can't you just play 'gotcha' games like this with someone who is in power? Such as, say, our current president? He has entire policies that are misleading, and not only speeches but entire initiatives which are accomplishing the opposite of their stated intention. Is that just too easy? Or is that just too ideologically inconvenient?

When the USA was the "Good Guys" in the eyes of the World, we did not NEED to torture.

When we were the "Good Guys" (Remember those days?) People from hostile Countries all over the world voulunteered sensitive and secret information to the US Government, all on their own, sometimes they offered that information at great personal risk to themselves and their families. These brave people likely would have been tortured and then killed by their own governments if they were caught giving info to the US.

Each American Embassy around the World used to have an intelligence specialist waiting to receive this freely given secret and sensitive information from people in hostile governments all around the World. These people gave us this secret information because they thought we in the United States were the only (last) hope for Freedom and Human Rights in the World.

Now Under Bush and Cheney, people from around the world stopped volunteering information (gee... I wonder why?).

Now we hurt people over and over again to get them to talk...

You be the Judge... Should we be the Country that people (not our citizens) are willing to risk their very lives and the lives of their families to give us the information we want...

OR

Do we want to be the country that hurts people to get what we want???

I've been reading these troll posts, them trying to defend Bush and his "interrogation" techniques. If they don't think that waterboarding is really torture, then why are they coming here wasting our time, trying to convinice us that Bush is doing waterboarding to keep us safe?

Everyone knows that Bush and Cheney are just taking all the money they can get from us the taxpayers to give to themselves and their rich corporate buddies. Then when the s**t hits the fan, Bush and Cheney and all their friends will run to Paraguay, while the idiot trolls will be left to face the anger of those of us who know what the TRUTH is. You trolls are so pathetic and so child-like, it's a wonder you can take a crap all by yourself without asking a Repub for permission! LOL

START THINKING FOR YOURSELF AND THEN YOU WILL SEE THE TRUTH!!!

I have two young children and I expect our government to protect them at whatever cost - torture is sometimes necessary, especially if we want to continue to live in the great country.
