It's a fight that has the nation's largest chicken producers squabbling, Big Sugar and Big Corn skirmishing and Sara Lee mixing it up with Farmer John. Lawmakers, too, have joined the fray, which already is thick with dueling petitions and at least one lawsuit. Meanwhile, government food regulators are uncertain how to proceed.

The question is at face value a simple one: When can food products, from chicken breasts to soda pop, rightfully be labeled as "natural?"

The bigger question, actually one that I have been interested in for 35 years is why do we have "unnatural" foods on the market at all?

I have been a vegetarian for sometime now. In spite of what the masses believe, no one should be eating cow, bird, or fish.

These beautiful creatures have their purpose on this earth and indeed we have "domain" over them, but this means that we are to "protect" them ¦ NOT GRILL THEM UP FOR DINNER! (By the way, "man" has grossly mistranslated and changed The Scriptures over hundreds of years on this and many other issues, so please, all you "christians" out there, don"t TRY to use your DEFILED "king james bible" to debate this issue? "What would "jesus" do"? I can assure you, Yahushua ("jesus") NEVER ate the flesh of a dead animal! He was, for sure, a vegetarian!)

Millions will be eating the turkey bird this Thanksgiving of course. I wonder how many realize just how these poor creatures are forced to live - treated - slaughtered?

Ironically, it is the Turkey that gets the last laugh! Turkey is loaded with cholesterol, fats, and yes, even a bit of fecal matter can be found in this meat ... "for seasoning"!

So, I would suggest that this issue of "labeling" food products as "natural" goes well beyond "soda pop"?

I wish food companies would be a little more honest about some of their products. As for the chicken with salt water as another commenter alluded to, what about folks who need to be on sodium limited diets (me) it's really really hard to find chicken that is just frozen without the salt water (thank you Trader Joe's)
and interesting that the media doesn't get the word on on all these so called natural diet and upscale food products that have a TON of sodium in em-take out the fat and sugar but then they replace it with salt---anyone ever looked at the nutrition label of a Lean Cuisine?
Or any other food like that YOU WOULD BE APALLED
at how much sodium is in it.

If you are salt sensitive, as many persons with hypertension are, a saline solution added to your *natural* meat is far from *natural* for you. As a matter of fact, are we not all *plumping up* and are rates of hypertension not *interesting*? If after a surgery, say a hip replacement, physical therapy does nothing to take away the pain in your muscles and your bones, for years and years, and your bloodtests do NOT indicate gout, for example, try doing what I did. Cut all meat out, and see if you do not get rid of the constant and nagging pain. You may even lose weight in the process. Now this was only about sodium. Next someone will want to tackle the corn syrup and other additions and *enrichments* to our diet. All those *enrichments* just enrich our girth, and the pocketbooks of so many, including insurance CEOs. How? Well, we all need to be insured, and all our premiums continue to go up, however, there is no cure, and no surgery that will help us, so the insurers are not spending any money, just receiving, and so our the drug companies. Take another pill, it will do wonders!

Natural good for you. Cyanide, asbestos and mercury are all natural and will kill you deader than a doornail. Lab manufactured vitamine C is just as good for you as 'natural' vitamine C but a heck of a lot cheaper. Don't buy the marketing hype. Organic and all natural lables are just marketing hype. Read the ingredient list if you are really interested.

I think it's pretty funny that the government and food production companies are engaging in an argument over semantics with regard to our food.

A good rule of thumb - if you have to argue about what it is, then it probably is not the best choice. Americans will cram whatever crap down their throat that saves them money and time. More thought goes into purchasing, I don't know, shoe polish than the food we eat. That's also very funny.

Going deer hunting next week. The venison that my wife and I will eat this winter is lean and natural. (minus any stray chemicals that farmers put on their crops).
