Fox Attacks...Decency: Network Preaches 'Moral Values' In Between Clips Of Soft Porn

Fox News' Bill O'Reilly has always been reliably quick to decry what he sees as a toxic American culture. Just this past Monday, O'Reilly took to the airwaves to attack the makers, and sellers, of rap music, saying, "Some very large American corporations are responsible for that corrosive entertainment." Naturally, what was lost on O'Reilly was that some of the people he was defaming were his very own paymasters.

And that's too bad, because if he spent a little time policing his own house, he'd discover that the Fox News Channel has a long history of peddling smut. The old playground taunt turns out to be a truism: He who smelt it, apparently dealt it.

And it's precisely that sort of double-dealing that rankles Robert Greenwald, the creative force behind Brave New Films. "Bill O'Reilly and others at Fox News cannot have it both ways," he says. "Either they're the morality police of our culture, or they're the smut-peddlers. They can't be both." Launched today, the latest production from Brave New Films, "Fox Attacks: Decency," drives Greenwald's point home. The short film captures Fox's hair-trigger tendency to air "after hours" style sexual content, "frequently in stories condemning precisely such images in the media as morally corrosive." Watch it:

This video dovetails with a new campaign undertaken by Brave New Films to urge cable subscribers to demand "a la carte" cable from the FCC.

Under an "a la carte" system, cable users could pick and choose the channels they wanted to pay for -- meaning they wouldn't be forced to waste their cash on soft porn from Fox News. (It's worth noting that current V-chip" technology is incapable of filtering out Fox's content because the news channel is not required to carry a viewer rating.) Are girls in bikinis, blotted out boobs, and gratuitous nonstories the issue here? Or is it a political agenda--albeit one that is in concert with my values? And could the solution ultimately kill opportunities to view valuable but as yet unknown or underexposed content?

The fact that Fox is hypocritical in the "morals and smut" area is nothing new. The network is simply an electronic British-style tabloid on this side of the pond. And sensationalism sells--whether on cable or at the checkout in the supermarket.

If exposure of dreck to children is the issue, the answer is parental monitoring. So what if "news" channels are not V-chippable? The extent to which parents can or do control viewing in their household is determinative. Tech-savvy kids can un-V-chip at television. And there is always the chance that they could view tabloid TV at friends' houses.

A la carte cable is a great idea for viewers--at first glance. But new or fledgling cable channels with worthy content--and those established but struggling for greater viewership--would be harmed considerably if they were not given the opportunity to compete, as they are in the present system. How many viewers would at first opt to subscribe to untried or less popular channels?

And if "good" content has less of a chance to compete, TV will always be "the wasteland."

Would anyone be a winner?

I only watch the Simpsons on Fox, which made a really good attempt to throw in some political stuff this time. They've been lame becuse they had their hands slapped....but all the jokes about the government in general in the last episode, were great!

Yes, I TEVO the Simpsons... as I cannot stomach anything else on Fox and can breeze through commercials.

I dont see a problem with shows that titilate or show chicks in little clothing, matter of fact I really like those shows. Hell the only reason to watch most of the TV shows now is to check out the good looking girls. Hell, I watch reruns of DOG EAT DOG just to see Brook Burns and her outfits. What a living doll. As a mother of a teenage boy I'm obligated to blocking FOX news, to prevent their sexually perverted, female degrading visuals from corrupting his wholesomeness. It's the duty of all parents. BLOCK FOX!

FOXNEWS is the true epitome of hypocrisy. I used to watch fox years ago, but when they start pontificating, acting like sanctimonious assholes, I stop watching them. Bill O'Reilly is the biggest hypocrite of them all. I stop watching FOX since 2000. I prefer CNN and MSNBC, Keith Olbermann is my favorite anchorman and Lou Dobbs.
