Hillary Clinton had a chance to do one of two things on the Peru Free Trade Agreement.

She could announce her opposition to the proposal and score the remarkable political coup of trumping both Barack Obama and John Edwards of an important issue for grassroots Democrats -- thus all but assuring her front-runner status as the race toward the first presidential caucuses and primaries accelerates.

Or she could do what Wall Street demanded.

Clinton went with Wall Street. On the same day that a majority of House Democrats voted against the Peru FTA, the senator from New York endorsed the current economic-policy priority of the Bush administration. ...

In so doing, Clinton joined Illinois Senator Obama in supporting the trade deal.

That means that, among the top contenders in the Democratic contest, only former North Carolina John Edwards is standing with the majority of congressional Democrats in opposition to the Bush administration's free-trade agenda.

You know what? Even if I didn't have an opinion on "free" trade, I think this would be the final straw for me with Clinton and Obama. They talk about their committment to the little guy, but then vote like this.

Edwards talks the talk, and then walks it, no matter what. At this point, I don't need to agree with everything thing a candidate says, I just want to be able to believe what a candidate says!

I can believe what Edwards says.

Here is one more of the many reasons why Hillary and Obama are sold out to the Big Money Interests.
Hillary, just like Bill will continue the expoting of American jobs, expansion of big media, end any hope of net neutrality.
She is better than any Republican except Ron paul.
For a progressive who will restore the Constitution and support the American people instead of Big Money KUCINICH is the best man and Edwards is second.

ABC NEWS: Edwards Picked Over Obama as 'The Un-Hillary'

Teddy Davis, Nov. 8, 2007

Former North Carolina Senator Nabs Coveted Iowa Endorsement

DES MOINES, IA -- Caucus4Priorities, a group seeking to redirect spending from the Pentagon to domestic needs, plans to endorse John Edwards Friday in Des Moines.

The decision to endorse Edwards over Illinois Sen. Barack Obama came down to "courage versus caution," according to the group's executive director.

"There's a rhetoric gap with Obama," executive director Peggy Huppert told ABC News. "He told me personally: 'Trust me. Ideologically, I'm with you.' But people have told him to be afraid of being pushed too far to the left. He doesn't bring up [cuts in Pentagon spending] on his own. He doesn't incorporate it into his speeches. He skirts around it. He talks around the edges. He never gets to the heart of it in strong, bold language."

Edwards, by contrast, won over the group with his harder edge.

ABC News: Edwards to Hit Rivals on Trade

November 09, 2007 12:06 PM

"David Sirota, a Democratic strategist and commentator, said Clinton and Obama have created an opening for Edwards by supporting the Peru deal. With spiraling oil prices, plant closings in Iowa, and economic insecurities related to the housing market, free-trade deals are growing less popular among Democrats, he said."

"I'm pretty stunned politically that Clinton is doing this," Sirota said. "The word 'NAFTA' has become a symbol for, 'You are selling me out.' Hillary Clinton is easy to portray as representing sort of the Wall Street status quo."

Why am I not surprised? Hillary and Obama get all the media attention because they support Wall Street and the big corporations insofar as they can get away with it, as is shown by their dodging the vote on the agreement with Peru. Fortunately we have primaries in Iowa and New Hampshire, where average Americans can attend town meetings and hear the candidates in person. Hopefully they will realize that John Edwards will address their needs far better than Hillary and Obama ever could.

Hillary Clinton is no friend of the American Working Class. She is a Republican in Democrat clothing. Obama is trying so hard to get to the middle he is selling his soul as well. John Edwards is the only viable candidate. Although I wish he hadn't paid so much for his haircut.

The Huffington Post: Edwards, Huckabee & The Rise of Iowa's Huey Longs

by David Sirota

... "Reuters just today publishes a story headlined "Iowa Voters Take Democrats to Task Over Jobs," noting that trade and globalization are becoming more and more prevalent on the campaign trail. This is likely to be fueled by the fact that Sens. Hillary Clinton (D) and Barack Obama (D) have both come out for the Peru Free Trade Agreement - the controversial bill that expands the NAFTA trade model. It is also likely to be fueled by Clinton surrounding herself with more and more Wall Street titans.

This is truly a battle between what I have called the Money Party and People Party - and it is happening right within the Democratic Party. As the New York Times reports this morning, those inside the Democratic Party pushing this NAFTA-style trade policy are "getting sizable campaign contributions from the sectors that are benefiting the most from the global economy" including "financial services firms, computer chip makers and other high-tech manufacturers." Ways and Means Committee Chairman Charles Rangel (D-NY), who is the architect of this deal, basically admitted as much, telling CNN after the vote that if you are a worker who is struggling right now, "if you're hurting, then [the Peru agreement] is a bad deal."

Rangel On NAFTA Expansion: "If You're Hurting, Then It's A Bad Deal"

By David Sirota on November 9, 2007 - 4:31am.

"House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Charles Rangel (D-NY), the chief architect of the the Peru Free Trade Agreement that expands NAFTA, he appeared on CNN Thursday night. In the midst of congratulating himself for passing the NAFTA expansion through the House this week, he acknowledged that the pact will crush American workers, saying:

"We haven't protected those people that have lost jobs as a result of trade or those people who just don't find industry in their communities...And so if you're hurting, then [the Peru agreement] is a bad deal."

This is stunning, even for Washington. The chief proponent of a bill earlier today was selling this bill on the House floor as a great achievement for the middle class that has been crushed by lobbyist-written trade policies. Then hours later after the votes are already cast, he goes on national television to admit that, actually it is true - the bill "is a bad deal" for workers who are hurting."

"The United States also needs to start paying attention to the Americas. We need better border security and comprehensive immigration reform. To reduce both illegal immigration and anti-American populism in Latin America, we must work with reform-minded governments to alleviate poverty, promote equitable development and strengthen energy cooperation." Where do Biden, Dodd, et al stand on this issue? Further, how much courage does it require to vote agree with majority? It takes more balls to step away from the flock and stand behind one's beliefs and principles. Edwards was one of the sheep giving Bush free rein to invade Iraq. Was that also courageous?

I don't know all the ramifications of this Peru free trade resolution, but I've come to appreciate that when Obama makes a decision, he thinks it through carefully and seeks input from other strong minds. So all you people lambasting Obama for this vote, please explain WHY this will be such a travesty for America or Peru. If you can't clearly articulate why...Then you need shift your lips in park and apply the emergency brake.
