AP:

The Senate confirmed retired judge Michael Mukasey as attorney general Thursday night to replace Alberto Gonzales, who was forced from office in a scandal over his handling of the Justice Department.

Mukasey was confirmed as the nation's 81st attorney general after a sharp debate over his refusal to say whether the waterboarding interrogation technique is torture.

We need to remember the following turn coats names in addition to ALL the republicans, for their own turn on the water board as soon as the Progressives are in control: Feinstein,LYERMAN,Carper,Bayh,Landrieu,Schumer and Nelson of Neb. These are republican lite DLC,ers who do not belong in the democratic party!!!

I'm surprised McCain didn't cast a vote.

I'm not surprised Hillary didn't. She stands for nothing other than trying to get elected. Having her on the Dem ticket is akin to having Jeb Bush on the Republican ticket.

Schumer's comments are outrageous on two level:

That we are even debating about torture.

And that he bases his support on a promise that if Congress outlawed waterboarding Mukasey would enforce it. The same Congress that confirmed Mukasey will follow Bush's memo about that to the letter, also.

We knew that this was bound to happen when Schumer and Feinstein sold out. Schumer was really in a bad position because he basically walked hand in hand with Mukasey when he was nominated. Still, there was no excuse when Mukasey wouldn't condemn water boarding. Feinstein sold out because of her husband's connection to the defense contracting business. But it would have been nice to see Clinton, Obama and Biden at least vote on this to let the voters know your REAL opinion on this IMPORTANT matter. Another example of Democratic "leadership".

And the Democrats manage to support Bush and his policies yet again. They're all crowing and running around thumping their chests over the Water bill veto override and the passage of the employment protections for gays/lesbians, both of which are fairly politically safe since all Americans want clean water and most Americans support non-discriminatory employment policies. The poor stupid bastards have just not learned how to frame any of these issues, still, after all these years of taking it from the republicans, they just simply don't get it. Hopefully there's no wonder among them about why their poll numbers are worse than Bush's.

There needs to be a massive progressive challenge in all those districts from which these Republican-lite Democrats are in to replace them with real Democrats. The progressives need to go to these districts and start explaining to the citizens in a language that they can understand what's at stake.

Since there is never an opportunity to discuss this important issue and be on-topic, I'm off-topic.

Watch the video under "Oh, Tucker!" http://dailykos.com/

Unbelievable.

Do you idiots realize that waterboarding is only used in maybe 1 out of 1000 interrogations and only in the most urgent situations where information is needed immediately to save lives. Despite what you think, these rarely used forms of "torture" do produce useful intelligence. Remember, we are not asking for confessions which could be coerced through torture but verifiable information about current or future events. We are asking for names and locations of imminent threats and if this intelligence proves false, the terrorist would have to believe that his "torture" would continue. I hope you utopian idiots are never faced with the prospect of having to defend your family at all costs.

So how does this benefit our troops when we just told the enemy we'll torture them if they don't tell us what we want to hear? Does this mean we can't say "naughty you" to anyone who tortures our soldiers?

As the left wingers squawk and flap their wings hysterically screeching,

WATERBOARDING IS TORTURE, TORTURE IS ILLEGAL. WATERBOARDING IS TORTURE, TORTURE IS ILLEGAL.

The carefully staged vote in the middle of the night confirms that no one, including most Dems, really cares about torture, as long as the tortured are not Americans. Nothing positive was accomplished by opposing this nomination or by repeatedly implying that George Bush violated international law. The country knows he violated international law, that's why he was elected and Kerry was not. The subject of Bush/Cheney crimes need to be addressed when they are out of office and the world needs to charge him with the crimes. This is another reminder that the majority of the progressive opinions on HuffPo are out of touch with mainstream America.

For those who think Kucinich is a left wing radical.

Wow

About as radical as Jacques Chirac.

;)

The US really hit a hard right turn after Carter and kept going.

Time to vote third party, friends. Time to remove Schumer in NY, Feinstein in CA, etc. No more voter triangulation. Gee if I vote for Hillary I won't get Guilliani. Vote for someone who gives a shit about this country. The world.

I live in NY and am, with many like minded, starting to organize against Schumer. He can join Leiberman in Isreal at the end of his term.

Thank goodness! Now we can get off that silly topic of defining torture and get back to the serious business of actually engaging in it (free from pesky concerns about war crimes, morality, our standing in the world, etc.).

Happy Birthday Democrat Congress!

This week is the one-year anniversary of Democrats winning Congress. But House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid probably aren't in a celebrating mood. The goodwill they enjoyed after their victory is gone. Their bright campaign promises are unfulfilled. Democratic leadership is in disarray. And Congress's approval rating has fallen to its lowest point in history.
