AP:

The Senate confirmed retired judge Michael Mukasey as attorney general Thursday night to replace Alberto Gonzales, who was forced from office in a scandal over his handling of the Justice Department.

Mukasey was confirmed as the nation's 81st attorney general after a sharp debate over his refusal to say whether the waterboarding interrogation technique is torture.

First of all, I am Jewish and resent all the anti-Semite trash talk on this blog.
Secondly I am no supporter of the current Israel government any more than I am a supporter of the current US government criminal syndicate.
A lot of people in the world trash all Americans because of Bush. Don't confuse the governments with the people.
Hatred and racism is ugly whether it's left, right or center. Get off it!
I would not want to have to judge Christians by the behavior of GWB!

Thanks to Schumer and Feinstein, Mukasey's confirmation means that further investigation into the Attorney General scandal is dead. Mukasey testified that if Karl Rove and Harriet Miers are held in contempt of Congress, he would not refer the matter to a grand jury for criminal prosecution, as federal law requires. Cover for the Bush administration.

It's a sad day for checks and balances and for this country.

"I want to tell you something very clear, don't worry about American pressure on Israel, we, the Jewish people control America, and the Americans know it."

- Ariel Sharon, 3 October, 2001.

We know what impact the lobbyist "special interests" of AIPAC has on greedy, fearful politicians. But how, exactly, is our current relationship to the Israeli government serving American citizens? America should stop creating enemies for herself by policing the world. She should set her focus on her own soil, her own independence, her own sovereignty, peace, and free trade. America should at no time be be acting as a proxy for another country.

Another humiliating defeat.

Now all Bush has to do is get Giulanni elected and the bunch of them will get off scott free.

This was never about torture, it was about setting prescidence. It was about subverting law.

And in years to come, the Democrats will be viewed as setting this prescidence. Not Bush, because all he treatened to do was appoint some flack as an interim AG. The question of liability would have remained there. The first words in defense of all these war criminals will be, "the nomination of Mukasey proves the question of "enhanced interogation" never met the criteria for crimes against the Geneva convention. In fact, Congress was never able to pass a bill to make waterboarding illegal, so, piss off."

Mark your calendars, your were there.11/07/07 is a date that will live in infamy.

It's a great day in America!

We now have a smart AG that believes in the powers of the unitary executive.

Way to go dems. NOT!

As bad as this news is, the Middle East just got worse:

Bhutto house surrounded by police

The house of Pakistani opposition leader Benazir Bhutto has been surrounded by police, hours before her party is due to hold a mass rally.
She has not been formally placed under house arrest, and police say the measure at her residence in Islamabad is for her own safety.

Several thousand of her supporters are reported detained ahead of the rally planned to be held in Rawalpindi.

What would you do if your family would be saved from a terrorist attack and the military had to use waterboarding to extract information. Would you do it????

Wow, we've got a new attorney general who can't tell whether waterboarding is torture and yet is universally considered to be a way better choice than Mr. Gonzales. Surely we've arrived at a new definition of "rock bottom".

As bad as this may seem, I cannot but fear even more just who they would have put in as a recess appointment at Thanksgiving. Ted Olsen, perhaps?

Fifty years from now Americans will ask themselves how could this generation let this happen. They will be unable to understand how a tiny-minded man who is morally bankrupt and functionally inept, could be propped up by a cabal of evil men who have placed greed and power above all else. It will be incomprehensible to them that our Constitution could be shredded and our government hijacked by a lawless group of pseudo-sons of liberty, beholden only to the highest bidders.

A sad day for the entire world indeed was the day George W. Bush was installed as this soulless figurehead, festering in a world of delusional bliss. Slinging his ill-gotten power gleaned from evil enablers, and carelessly flaunting it like some schoolyard bully, he has shat upon the very essence of what remains from the past glory of our republic.

I weep for the loss we must all face. This loss of credibility and trustworthiness throughout the world is just beginning and is all but inevitable. There is only one chance for redemption; one shot to repair this horrendous damage. The world and future generations will forgive us only if we take the steps that are necessary. We as American citizens must unite with one singularly crucial purpose; the removal of Bush and Cheney from their high office. It is the only course that is acceptable.

Everyone, we must let our voices be heard, our actions be seen, and our integrity be felt. There must be those capable and loyal enough to the Constitution who are willing to exercise the intentions of the founding fathers and impeach, convict, and remove this president and his cohorts. We the people must force them. From the grave their souls demand it. And we the people must demand that our representatives live up to the honor and clarity of their predecessors and act upon their constitutional duty for the sake of the world.

We must act now or it will not be George W. Bush's legacy alone, but all of ours as well.

Well, the circus is still in town! When Mukasey really does turn out to be the ringer we all think he is, who is going to avoid the blame this time? Ms. Feinstein and Mr. Schumer better not say they were fooled by his intelligence. They know he was pretending sheep in wolf's clothing from day one simply because Bush selected him. Ipso facto. And, my oh my oh my, how convenient Clinton, Obama, Dodd, and Biden found it more important to be on the campaign trail than to be in the Senate, where they are paid to be, to put their (according to them) votes of oppposition on the official record. So they "said" they opposed him. Big deal. They didn't prove it with their vote. I ask you good people here, is it more important to be running around campaigning, or is more important to show up to cast a vote on one of the most important nominations the president can make? As far as I am concerned, those 4 candidates, no matter what they pronounce on the stump, just showed their unworthiness to be our leader.

I guess I am at my wit's end. All I can think to do is pray. Pray that Schumer is right and that this guy really cares about the law, and that he will punish the individual in leadership who condone and order torture and rendition and who cross the Constitution.

It's prayer or revolution and the people of this nation are too duped or stupid, fat, lazy, and scared to go that second route.

Dems have abandoned their base again and again since the '06 election. Their base needs to desert them at future elections. Vote something else, Greens if possible. The systems is a rotten-thru-the-core flim-flam ponzi scheme.
