Thousands of Hollywood screenwriters on strike against film and TV studios rallied outside 20th Century Fox on Friday in their biggest collective show of force yet as pressure mounted on both sides to resume contract talks.

With the walkout in its fifth day, the greatest impact continued to be on scores of prime-time television shows where production work has been thrown into disarray, especially after writer-producers in charge of those programs refused to cross picket lines.

When are the writers from Mexico and Latin America going to be hired to do the job these American writers obviously don't wish to do anymore.

From Eugene Volokh at the Volokh Conspiracy:

A forwarded email from a union source.

Dear fellow WGAW members,

I'm ..., Chair of the newly-formed WGA West Strike Rules Compliance Committee ("SRCC") and a member of the WGA West's Board of Directors as well as an alternate member of the 2007 MBA Negotiating Committee.

The other members of the SRCC are: ....

The mission of the SRCC is to ensure that the Strike Rules are strictly enforced. The SRCC will primarily concentrate its efforts on unearthing and discouraging scab writing.

There is no more fundamental working rule than the prohibition against a WGA member performing struck work. Strike Rule #9 states: "You must inform the Guild of the name of any writer you have reason to believe is engaged in strike breaking activity or other scab writing." If you have suspicions about a particular writer or project, the best way to report them will be to call our hotline or click on the red icon on the WGA.org homepage and simply fill out the on-line form. We'll handle your call discreetly.

Our purpose is not to punish people; it is to head off scab work before it can undermine the strike.

The STRIKE TIP HOTLINE number is: ...

When you call, it will help if you flesh out your information as much as possible.

For general inquiries regarding strike rules please call: ...

Please know that the leadership of your Guild is just as eager as you to keep this strike short. Unfettered scab writing will only lengthen it. The simplest and most effective thing you can do to speed things up is to share information with the SRCC.

I've never been prouder of this union than out on this week's picket lines. I believe a good contract is within reach. We just have to hold together.

Thank you all very much.

Sincerely,

...

On behalf of the Strike Rules Compliance Committee

Why is this writers strike important??? Is it because of the unique nature of writing. That being, it's a job Mexicans can't do. Villa rides!

Here's the problem as I see it. As everthing else that is "Hollywood", "Hollywood" does not reflect the real world.

In the real world there is a clear seperation of "craft" and "Management". Therefore if a Management employee honors a picket line they can be terminated. Also, management employees are not allowed to be members of Unions.

In Hollywood, on the other hand, Management(Producers, Directors,Stars, ??) employees are allowed to maintain their memberships in "craft" unions. Sounds fishy to me. Who is "craft" and who is "management" ?

The producers of these shows and their studio head friends, are greedy bastards who wipe their butts with money while these writers toil for them. The union shouldn't even have dropped the DVD demands. Scumbags like Michael Eisner and the rest of these money hungrey dirtbags should be slapped around by the union untill they give in, if they don't then let them continue to lose money. The pressure should be on them, not the writers.

Why doesn't HuffPo ever show pictures of people protesting the war in Iraq?

I've read comments from folks who say there are marches in their home towns. That has to be as important as the writer's strike.

Just like during Vietnam, George prefers "fake war" to actually having the guts to go fight in a real one. While our guys kill and die in a REAL war on his orders, this coward is playing "video games" of pretend war. This tells you all you need to know about this wanna-be and the rest of the "war dodging" wanna-be's in his sickening administration.

I only hope this one doesn't end like the last one in which the union reps tossed in the towel after all of that time and effort by the dues payers.

Unions are the strenth of all American workers. The Union began the snowball that ended aparthied in South Africa. Leaders of unions might become greedy or corrupt, they should be replaced. But if we lose unions, we lose our strength. Look at what happened to the air traffic controllers union. Think there might be a link between that move by the reagan admin and hmos taking over health care? Kaiser and Reagan were very close, and look at what we have now.
If you like having an 8 hour workday and paid benefits, you need unions. Un

Now that you talented people are out of work for a while, how about putting those skills to work writing letters to the editors and to Congress explaining why we should get out of Iraq, impeach dick and george, fight global warming, protect our country and our constitution at the same time, provide universal health care, etc., etc., etc.... Send copies to HuffPost as an inspiration to the rest of us.

Ok, so, let's get down to some key messages for the strikers:

1) When Hollywood producers and studios are making money the writers should be too.

2) Writers deserve payment regardless of how content is delivered.

3) See #1, and #2.
