Five-metre (16-feet) high waves smashed apart a Russian tanker on Sunday, spilling 1,300 tonnes of fuel oil into the Black Sea in what environmentalists called an "ecological catastrophe."

Four other cargo ships including three carrying sulphur also sank as winds of up to 108 kilometres (67 miles) an hour battered the Kerch Strait separating the Black Sea from the Sea of Azov.

"1,300 tonnes of fuel oil into the Black Sea", and it took an expert to point out it was an "ecological catastrophe"?

Is it possible that the human species does not scale well?

For the future, we suggest the ecological system as a basis for a theory of organisations and organisational change. We believe this opens the door to a number of hypotheses in situations where one faces the need for change. Ecology and the ecological system have, however, an even broader significance for business:
Firstly, in the understanding that environment-conservation is on the agenda of all serious businesses in the world. Reduced energy consumption, lower pollution levels and the highest possible degree of re-circulation of products and scrap is a moral imperative - and is increasingly becoming a competitive advantage.
Secondly, ecological theory has implications for the human aspects of the working environment we create in organisations. Ecology describes the relationship between living organisms and their environment. We can therefore justifiably discuss ecology in relation to workplace design, ecology in relation to the manner in which work is organised, and ecology in relation to the psycho-social environment within the organisation.
Thirdly, environment is now the fastest growing area of investment in the world. 'Green technology', waste treatment and recycling are creating substantial opportunities for profit.
Fourthly, as in all other contexts, it is imperative that we develop an understanding of ecology in the field of business. Finding applications for ecological thought in all possible spheres of life is a task in itself; a further reason for choosing the ecosystem as the main metaphor for organisations.

Why can't oil tankers keep the oil in the boat?!? Seriously, you never hear about any other kind of boat crashing into something and spilling product into the sea.

And while I'm on the subject, why is Exxon still in business? Why weren't the penalties against Exxon for the Valdez spill high enough to put them out of business forever?

Fossil fuels have become the scourge of this planet—while consumers sit around waiting for greedy CEO's to figure out how to make a profit out of sunlight.

Peak oil can't get here fast enough.

Actually it's here, the effects just aren't obvious yet.

The sooner we run out of oil, the better.

Isn't that just like the Russians. We have an oil spill, they have to have one too, only bigger.

Even though this was San Francisco Bay"s worst oil spill in nearly two decades according to the Coast Guard. Hundreds of seabirds are at risk.

I suppose you'll try to top that, Russia?
