I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Maidrite

For the past week, Anita Esterday's life has been turned upside down. A single mother of two, she found herself in the middle of a media circus when it was reported that Sen. Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign failed to leave her a tip after they were waited on at a Maid-Rite in Toledo, Iowa. In the ensuing frenzy, the Maid-Rite manager insisted that a tip was, in fact, left. But Esterday says the manager just told a fib to make the attention go away. And the press, she adds, needs to get a perspective on what actually matters. Esterday took time out of her day on Tuesday to answer questions from the Huffington Post.

Huffington Post: What is it like to be in the middle of a campaign-related media frenzy?
Esterday: It is nuts. Even going on the web for anything. There was a website in Cedar Rapids that said I had committed suicide. I understand that whoever wrote this meant it as a joke, but I have family in Cedar Rapids and I know people in Cedar Rapids and my mother committed suicide. So it wasn't a joke to me... It's taking it to an extreme and I guess in America now that's what people like and it's a shame that the media ran with this.

Does the press have misplaced priorities?
In this country, look at how many homeless people there are. There are millions. There are people just like me. I'm not the only parent who has had to raise two kids and barely makes $20,000 a year... This is supposed to be the United States of America, the strongest nation in the world, and we can't even provide places for our homeless. The media should be focusing on that.

Point taken. But could you set the record straight about the tip? Your manager says they left something but you contend it never happened.
If your phone is ringing from six in the morning till four in the afternoon and customers are saying what's wrong, the telephone lines are down, and it's because reporters are trying to get through, you say whatever you have to say [to get them to go away]. I don't know if they left a $100 tip or not but I haven't seen it yet. And none of the other waitresses have said they got the tip. [Editor's Note: after the tip controversy became a national story, the Clinton campaign returned to the restaurant and left $20].

Sen. Clinton talked about you - following this incident - in some of her speeches about women earning minimum wage and you seemed upset about it.
To all the politicians, if you talk to somebody and maybe their life interests you, don't just go down the road then and use them as part of your speech to get votes. I was never even asked that day if I'm a Democrat or a Republican or whatever. I was never asked whom I was behind. And then to go down and be called up that night [in a speech by Clinton], was I angry about it? Yes I was. Don't get me wrong they called me a few days later to ask if they could use me in the speech. And they sent me a release form, but they were already using me. So what the hell, I signed it.

How has this whole saga affected you and the restaurant?
There were phone calls going off the wall. It disrupted business and hurt it in some ways. I'm thankful I still have a job there and thank them very much for that. I'm sure it took money away from them. Out of my life, from day one of meeting her it has been turned upside down and not in a good way.

Does this change the way you are approaching the presidential election?
I've been an independent all my life. My mom was a Democrat and my father a Republican. I just sat back and watched them argue and stayed in the middle. But I'm not going to vote for Hillary. That is a definite. No one could pay me enough money. My opinion of her has changed drastically. The more I read and find out about her it changes more and more to the negative. I don't believe she can help out the working women of this world because I don't believe she gets it.

This is a non-story.

This isn't a full wait-service establishment, they have drive-in windows!

Here is their menu- They must have had quite a crew to run up such a big bill!

In short, this isn't an establishment where people leave tips. You don't get a menu, you walk up to a counter, announce your own meal to a sales clerk, and then you either pick it up or it gets brought out.

There is no here, here.

THANK YOU!!!!

I thought this is a full service restaurant wherein a waitress/waiter wait on you. I wouldn't give a tip too! This waitress is not being truthful what kind of establishment they have!

Had it not become a quarrelling point over some middlin' aspect of minimum wage, it could have been the catalyst for a national discussion on how income is made and reported.
The fact that Ms.Esterday has so drastically changed her opinion merely reflects how vulnerable we are to controlled news. I would be interested in hearing if Ms. Esterday will vote for anyone in either party, since none of 'em have much connection with the working class, with the possible exception of Ron Paul and Dennis Kucinich who may be at either end of the spectrum when it comes to politics but absolutely joined at the hip when it comes to how government can involve people

Why in the world the waitress is blaming Hillary Clinton for not getting the tip? Its her people that should be blamed not her, that is like your friend killed someone and because you're a friend and in the same area when the crime took place you take the blame!

THIS IS A STUPID QUESTION!

But nothing surprises me about huffpo anymore, Arianna is a Republican, but calling herself now progressive....!

I ONLY give a tip to a waiter/waitress IF the service is good, if its lousy, forget it!

Wow, a real story. A real story about Hillary. A real negative story about Hillary. But why did it get this far? They sure handled it badly -- again. With each passing day I wonder beyond all wonders why this woman is running for president. She shouldn't be, she's just not the one.

More attacks on Hillary here...how not surprising.

So who was the instigator of this tip story? How did it get out and why?

In reading this blogg, I found it amazing that the waitress did not ask for a meeting with HRC. Instead everyone appears to be judging HRC on what could be suspect information. I feel for the waitress, but I also feel that the decision to vote should be based on the issues. I also would like to know more about the use of my name. If it were me, I would want to meet with Hillary and let her know how I feel and my issues. That would be the real test. We don't seem to judge George W. Bush on what his staff does.

So? It is automatically assumed that a waiter/waitress is going to receive a tip that the level of service has dropped. Granted, some wait staff I have tipped very well, 30-40% but there have been some that have been lucky to receive 1%. If you want my tip you are going to work to earn it, do not expect me to leave you 15-20% just because the amounts are calculated at the bottom of the receipt. Do I care if Clinton tipped or how much she tipped? No, because if I judged her I would be a hypocrite - and I will admit it first hand, I do not always tip, which is why I almost never pay when we go out, my partner does.

I think this has been a non story from the very beginning. I'm sure Hillary doesn't carry a pocket of cash to pay tips. I do not support any of the candidates yet. They all have something good to offer. I do know one thing. I will vote for any of the democratic candidates next November because any of them is better then any of the repub candidates. Some people that say they will not vote for Hillary under any circumstances, will be helping to elect a republican, and that is a shame. If you do that, you give up your right to complain about anything that happens in the next 4 years.

Wow, the common person speaks. She has voiced what most Americans think of Hillary. That she cannot be trusted and that people do not just dislike her, but are very much against her. She could be Reps best asset.

Huffington Post is chasing this story just as MSNBC or CNN would. You had to get in there and get in the woman's face just like everyone else.
"scooping" sucks. It is mindless.
You always become the thing you hate. The thing you purport to be an alternative to.
Don't go down that road, Huff Post.

This story is as small as the minds which are fascinated with it.

Long story short, Ms. Clinton has a great many inconsistencies, which must be examined closely.
