I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Maidrite

For the past week, Anita Esterday's life has been turned upside down. A single mother of two, she found herself in the middle of a media circus when it was reported that Sen. Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign failed to leave her a tip after they were waited on at a Maid-Rite in Toledo, Iowa. In the ensuing frenzy, the Maid-Rite manager insisted that a tip was, in fact, left. But Esterday says the manager just told a fib to make the attention go away. And the press, she adds, needs to get a perspective on what actually matters. Esterday took time out of her day on Tuesday to answer questions from the Huffington Post.

Huffington Post: What is it like to be in the middle of a campaign-related media frenzy?
Esterday: It is nuts. Even going on the web for anything. There was a website in Cedar Rapids that said I had committed suicide. I understand that whoever wrote this meant it as a joke, but I have family in Cedar Rapids and I know people in Cedar Rapids and my mother committed suicide. So it wasn't a joke to me... It's taking it to an extreme and I guess in America now that's what people like and it's a shame that the media ran with this.

Does the press have misplaced priorities?
In this country, look at how many homeless people there are. There are millions. There are people just like me. I'm not the only parent who has had to raise two kids and barely makes $20,000 a year... This is supposed to be the United States of America, the strongest nation in the world, and we can't even provide places for our homeless. The media should be focusing on that.

Point taken. But could you set the record straight about the tip? Your manager says they left something but you contend it never happened.
If your phone is ringing from six in the morning till four in the afternoon and customers are saying what's wrong, the telephone lines are down, and it's because reporters are trying to get through, you say whatever you have to say [to get them to go away]. I don't know if they left a $100 tip or not but I haven't seen it yet. And none of the other waitresses have said they got the tip. [Editor's Note: after the tip controversy became a national story, the Clinton campaign returned to the restaurant and left $20].

Sen. Clinton talked about you - following this incident - in some of her speeches about women earning minimum wage and you seemed upset about it.
To all the politicians, if you talk to somebody and maybe their life interests you, don't just go down the road then and use them as part of your speech to get votes. I was never even asked that day if I'm a Democrat or a Republican or whatever. I was never asked whom I was behind. And then to go down and be called up that night [in a speech by Clinton], was I angry about it? Yes I was. Don't get me wrong they called me a few days later to ask if they could use me in the speech. And they sent me a release form, but they were already using me. So what the hell, I signed it.

How has this whole saga affected you and the restaurant?
There were phone calls going off the wall. It disrupted business and hurt it in some ways. I'm thankful I still have a job there and thank them very much for that. I'm sure it took money away from them. Out of my life, from day one of meeting her it has been turned upside down and not in a good way.

Does this change the way you are approaching the presidential election?
I've been an independent all my life. My mom was a Democrat and my father a Republican. I just sat back and watched them argue and stayed in the middle. But I'm not going to vote for Hillary. That is a definite. No one could pay me enough money. My opinion of her has changed drastically. The more I read and find out about her it changes more and more to the negative. I don't believe she can help out the working women of this world because I don't believe she gets it.

It's so pathetic that this is even an issue. So let's say she didn't tip. Perhaps, in her frenzy with people and the media she didn't pay attention to that detail. Can we give the woman some slack? This once again shows the way Huff-Post loves to strike down Clinton at every opportunity. And this waitress should have the common sense not to play into the media and the hyenas that make a living out of this kind of crap.

In fact, as an independent and some one who hasn't decided yet, this just makes me want to defend Hillary from the haters.

People get grip here. If you are so bad off, I'll send you the tip.

So the media reports trivialities and continues to wave them in front of our noses for weeks while they ignore anything substantive candidates may have to say.Judging from the hundreds of posts arguing the finer points of tipping, getting haircuts, revealing cleavage, we are mesmerised. Here's what we can do.
1.Take every opportunity to hear any candidate in person that comes our way.
2. Go to each candidates website and watch footage, read their policy papers.
3.Take a good look at "second tier" candidates. If one stands out, send a donation, volunteer.

If the bull ignores the red flag, there ain't no fight.
If we go for the distraction, we won't elect the president we need, but the one we allowed to win.

That Hillary and entourage ALL failed to leave a tip is an indication that none of them, especially Hillary Clinton, is in touch with the average hard working American. What New Yorker goes to a restaurant and "forgets" to tip? And who adds insult to injury by sending a paltry $20 after the incident hits the fan? Hillary Clinton, whom I once supported, has shown herself to be more Republican than Democrat in the way she has voted in the Senate. First, it was "If I knew then what I know now...", then she again votes to take a first step toward another war by voting to label Iran's Republican Guard as terrorists. I ask you Hillary, what did the 23 Senators who voted against the Iraq war know that you didn't? I'm no fan of Iran, but if Iran's Republican Guard is a terrorist organization, does that mean our own CIA is one, too? Why, Hillary, do you pander to extremist conservatives and crackpot Christianists who will not vote for you under any circumstance?

Failure to leave a tip IS relevant.

When will you guys ever get it. We do not want Hillary. She has way too much baggage and we
need someone who can represent us, the middle
class. We do not need someone so polished they forgot they still belong to the human kind.
If you run for office you had better see to it that you are impeccable in everything. I expect that much and we should not lower our standards. Get someone who cares and who will change things around. Hillary won't and I am a DEM.

How many days is this two week old story going to be *breaking political news*?

Most Maid-Rite restaurants are counter service, not waitress service - when is there going to be a correction or proof that a waitress even *served* the meal; that it wasn't picked up on a tray at the counter? Hmmm???

Can we stop the crap and get serious?

When did journalists stop reporting real news and replace it with trivia about tips, hair styles, clothing, color preferences, nervous tics, and so on and on and on?

What a wierd world journalists have created!

Solution: Allow six weeks for campaigning all at the same time and have a national primary!

The issue here is staff work, and direction about what the campaign values. The obligation to pay for the services one receives should be a bedrock value for any Democratic politician. "A workman is worthy of his hire" is one of the first things one learns in the working world. Ones wages are not a favor bestowed by the rich, but a right earned. If the campaign does not reflect that value, then that is a big deal. Of course Hillary does not personally handle the payments, but she is responsible for the organization that does. Competent staff work reflects the campaign's values. It did not pay the working folk. You know that they don't get why this is important because the Clinton campaign is worried about their image when they should be making the point that the person who paid the bill and could see that there was no tip failed to represent their values.

$20 on a $157 dollar tab?

That's less then thirteen percent! In what world is thirteen percent called a "tip?"

They stiffed her TWIICE. And the Hillary campop thinks thirteen percent is a good tip, they've been stiffing waitresses this all over the county.

Heck, Hillary has probably stiffed more waitresses than Bill.

seeing as though you have deleted my posts regarding Hillary's latest endorsement as quickly as I posted it maybe this would be OK for HuffPo after all a waitress does serve food right ?

Recent cases of botulism in baby food, salmonella in peanut butter and e.coli in spinach are all signs of a disturbing trend. However, this is not merely a health issue; it is an issue of national security. Imported food could be tainted with biological or chemical agents before entering the United States or toxins could be introduced at a domestic food processing plant. By the time anyone begins to feel the effects of these toxins, this food could have reached thousands of people across the country, resulting in serious illness and even death. Further, attacks that do not directly affect human health could still cause panic, undermine the economy, and curb American trade for years to come.

While the number of cases of food borne illness has more than doubled in the last five years, the Bush Administration has drastically reduced the resources for addressing food safety issues. The budget for the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition has been cut from $48 million to $25 million in just three years. Also, annual inspections of domestic food processing plants dropped 25 percent since 2005.

As recent events have shown, the FDA’s ability to protect our food supply and protect the American people from food borne illness may be compromised. If the FDA is incapable of defending our food supply from viruses, one must wonder how prepared the FDA is to secure our food supply in the event of a terrorist attack. As Chairman of the Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee of the House Energy and Commerce Committee,Rep Stupak(D-Mi)

so the house passed this ban on mercury in our food supply ,the senate will soon follow but of course Bush OPPOSES this ban.

Maybe we should all e-mail our congressional representatives.

What a revolting thread!

But it's the kind of "story" that brings out the worst in people. We get it -- HuffPo is gunning for Hillary.

Can we move on to something interesting now?

Congressman Frank backs Clinton
US Representative Barney Frank is endorsing Hillary Clinton for president and will be an economic adviser to her campaign, it announced this afternoon.

"I have from the beginning of this campaign believed that Hillary Clinton was the candidate best qualified to serve as President," Frank said in a statement issued by the Clinton campaign. "I am convinced that once elected, the qualities she will bring to the job -- commitment, intellect, and political skills -- will make her an extremely effective leader in our effort to reverse the badly flawed course on which George Bush and past Republican Congresses have set this country."

Frank rose to the leadership of the House Financial Services Committee after Democrats wrested control of Congress last November.
