Iowa Waitress Speaks Out: I Didn't Get Tip From Clinton, Media Has Misplaced Priorities

Maidrite

For the past week, Anita Esterday's life has been turned upside down. A single mother of two, she found herself in the middle of a media circus when it was reported that Sen. Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign failed to leave her a tip after they were waited on at a Maid-Rite in Toledo, Iowa. In the ensuing frenzy, the Maid-Rite manager insisted that a tip was, in fact, left. But Esterday says the manager just told a fib to make the attention go away. And the press, she adds, needs to get a perspective on what actually matters. Esterday took time out of her day on Tuesday to answer questions from the Huffington Post.

Huffington Post: What is it like to be in the middle of a campaign-related media frenzy?
Esterday: It is nuts. Even going on the web for anything. There was a website in Cedar Rapids that said I had committed suicide. I understand that whoever wrote this meant it as a joke, but I have family in Cedar Rapids and I know people in Cedar Rapids and my mother committed suicide. So it wasn't a joke to me... It's taking it to an extreme and I guess in America now that's what people like and it's a shame that the media ran with this.

Does the press have misplaced priorities?
In this country, look at how many homeless people there are. There are millions. There are people just like me. I'm not the only parent who has had to raise two kids and barely makes $20,000 a year... This is supposed to be the United States of America, the strongest nation in the world, and we can't even provide places for our homeless. The media should be focusing on that.

Point taken. But could you set the record straight about the tip? Your manager says they left something but you contend it never happened.
If your phone is ringing from six in the morning till four in the afternoon and customers are saying what's wrong, the telephone lines are down, and it's because reporters are trying to get through, you say whatever you have to say [to get them to go away]. I don't know if they left a $100 tip or not but I haven't seen it yet. And none of the other waitresses have said they got the tip. [Editor's Note: after the tip controversy became a national story, the Clinton campaign returned to the restaurant and left $20].

Sen. Clinton talked about you - following this incident - in some of her speeches about women earning minimum wage and you seemed upset about it.
To all the politicians, if you talk to somebody and maybe their life interests you, don't just go down the road then and use them as part of your speech to get votes. I was never even asked that day if I'm a Democrat or a Republican or whatever. I was never asked whom I was behind. And then to go down and be called up that night [in a speech by Clinton], was I angry about it? Yes I was. Don't get me wrong they called me a few days later to ask if they could use me in the speech. And they sent me a release form, but they were already using me. So what the hell, I signed it.

How has this whole saga affected you and the restaurant?
There were phone calls going off the wall. It disrupted business and hurt it in some ways. I'm thankful I still have a job there and thank them very much for that. I'm sure it took money away from them. Out of my life, from day one of meeting her it has been turned upside down and not in a good way.

Does this change the way you are approaching the presidential election?
I've been an independent all my life. My mom was a Democrat and my father a Republican. I just sat back and watched them argue and stayed in the middle. But I'm not going to vote for Hillary. That is a definite. No one could pay me enough money. My opinion of her has changed drastically. The more I read and find out about her it changes more and more to the negative. I don't believe she can help out the working women of this world because I don't believe she gets it.

Let me get this straight. We are going to pillory Hillary and not even ask how big a tip Bush left for the trillion dollar blood feast he has had in Iraq. Oh yes, maybe he did tip several billions to all he crooked friends, Blackwater, SinCorp, Murder Inc........

Imagine that a politician that doesn't get it. How unique is that. It just confirms my suspicions all along that our governmant doesn't give a shit about us just show them the money and that's where they will go. Clinton and all of the rest don't have a clue whats happening in this country. Vote all of the incumbants out in 08 then perhaps someone will listen to us for a little while anyway. This story is just another example of how they feel about us.

Some of the posters are insane. This woman is not a republican plant. She's a waitress. I doubt any of you know how much it sucks not to get a tip. My wife and I have logged a zillion hours in restaurants, me as a cook, and my wife as a waitress. Her mom and grandma are waitresses. Both of our sisters have all waited tables. Amongst them, they've been very well tipped by Bernie Sanders, Pat Leahy, and Ted Kennedy, among other less notable politicians. I watched a waitress get stiffed once and fly into a rage running into the parking lot throwing ketchup packets at the offender's vehicle. It sucks. Leave Ms. Esterday the hell alone. Damn. And she's probably right that Hillary, the Republicans, and the rest of the politicians in this country don't give a crap about people like her.

MY FIRST THOUGHT WAS WHAT A SHAME. HOWEVER, UPON REFLECTION I SMELL A REPUKLIRAT. SEEMS TO ME THIS YOUNG LADY WAS A PLANT SENT BY ROVE A RONI AS HIS MISSION IS TO DESTROY THE CREDIBILITY OF THE LEADING OPPONENT OF THE GREEDY OVERCOMPENSATED PARASITES AKA GOP. THAT'S THE USUSAL TATIC USED BY THE GOP AS THEY HAVE YET TO WIN ANY RACE HONESTLY.

man oh man. Can't everyone see all this is one big plant? A "tip"? C'mon. This woman is no more a democrat than Bush is a genius.

The Warmonglican machine is at work and is trying to polarize a very polarizing person to achieve it's main mission--keep the whitehouse. They take a trivial issue like a tip and make it more important than the hundreds of thousands that have died in this illicit war.

The real enemy is the right-faciast wing of the political government.... not these candidates trying to win back the whitehouse.

Be smarter about your criticism. Hillary will be 1 million times better than any repug sleazeball currently in the lineup.

Do I want her to win? I don't know. All I know is the war must end, health care must be solved, respect must be re-earned in the world community, the deficit needs to be tackled... and that's just the beginning. Do you really think all these attacks are really doing the dems any good. All it's doing is energizing the other side.

Look at the mash-potato lineup on the other side. Little controversy, except for screw-u-lani. The dems (the politicians and their followers) are just the puppets of the opposition, once again, and are playing right in their hands.

Ignorance is not going to be so blissful next time around.

Hillary bashing is not going to do anyone any good, especially if she ends up being the candidate.

If you read the waitress' quote carefully, you will see that she says that she 'has had' to raise 2 two kids on 20,000 a year. This implies that the raising of children has recently ended. So maybe we can drop the single mother meme.

Jeez, it's come to a freakin' tip? Tips and tirades and tired PR..oh, my! Talk about lions and tigers and bears..oh, my! Get over it already!
Whatever, "her peeps" should be the ones having their feet held to the fire, not Hillary Clinton. I doubt she paid the bill, either. If Anita Esterday has made the decision NOT to vote for someone based on whether they left a tip or not, why is anyone interested in what she has to say?
No, I am not a decidedly Hillary supporter, but I sure as hell care more about her position on issues than a silly faux-pas such as this!
But, it does beg the question..whose agenda was being served by reporting this and just who alerted the press about this VERY crucial aspect of a presidential candidate's platform? (You never know when "tip etiquette" might help with world affairs, eh?) That story I might care about!

This incident sums up Hillary --& hence the fervor.

Super slick & calculating person, who casts aside/ignores the little people --for big donors.

Here is my fear - Hillary was looking good for awhile - then the hate machine took over and is running anything silly they can think of these last few days and doing what they can to make Obama look better. Remember he is the totally weakest candidate and easiest to beat.

Come January 3rd - Obama beats Hillary in Iowa -the media feasts on it, and by the first week in February the primaries are over , and wow, we now have the absolute weakest and easiest for the Republicans to beat person to run for office. They take out their no experience and racist card keeping the South, and come November, low and behold, we have another Republican elected. How did that happen?

Major mistake having all the primaries happen in one month vs spead out over six months. Back firing. And they will at the last minute do to Hillary what they did the Howard Dean, making him look foolish based upon...what? Repeat of history and such an obvious set up that happens almost efortlessly because the Republicans control the media.

Swindled again...

Remember - all credible experienced candidates like Joe Biden or Richardson have never been given the media or the microphone - even by the Democrat National Committee - Howard Dean are you listening? Don't let them do this again.

It's so obvious what is happening.

Obama has two years of talking - and no record - he is rapidly turning into a bore - 2 years experience, only 46 years, no chance of being elected. Disaster in the making. Wake up. We are once again being had.

Obama is the weakest of all the candidate - 46 years old with only 2 years national elected experience as a Senator - the Republican media is pushing him and pushing him strong.

The Republican media is swiftboating Hillary as they once did to Howard Dean, but leaving us with no alternative candidants except one (Obama) that will definitely lose in November as they never gave the microphone to the experienced Democrats like Joe Biden or Richardson. The Democrats are being set up again

This media obsession with trivial stuff (i.e. tips, UFO's hiarcuts, cleavage, etc.) rather than a critical examination of a candidate's gut instincts about issues that matter (i.e. Iraq war, health care, dollar devaluation, etc.) disgusts me. Are we not out of the caves yet? Are we civilized or are we not? Get real America.

So, Anita Esterday is still upset that Hillary Clinton did not personally give her a tip? Well, boo freakin' hoo. Like Hillary has time to hand every two-bit waitress a ten spot. And Esterday complains about the media? Well this is what you get for runnin' off at the mouth without thinking first, dearie. Of course, if you thought things through first, you wouldn't have had those two kids on only a $20K salary, huh. And of course you aren't voting for Hillary, she didn't buy your vote! But keep complaining, Esterday, I'm sure it will get you a segment on Hannity & Colmes.

Even as a card carrying John Edwards supporter, I am not sure what to make of her position. But it seems as though she was stiffed, and there is really no excuse for that after making a speech decrying the fate of working women in America. Hillary has capitalized on her karyotype rather than her policies. I am hoping that voters in Iowa see this for what it is: a power grab by an ambitious (even if well intended and well spoken) power monger. Its time to put ideas first and ditch the experience argument. Besides even her old man's record is nothing to brag about. JRE is right for America, HRC is not. Giordy
