Iowa Waitress Speaks Out: I Didn't Get Tip From Clinton, Media Has Misplaced Priorities

I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Maidrite

For the past week, Anita Esterday's life has been turned upside down. A single mother of two, she found herself in the middle of a media circus when it was reported that Sen. Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign failed to leave her a tip after they were waited on at a Maid-Rite in Toledo, Iowa. In the ensuing frenzy, the Maid-Rite manager insisted that a tip was, in fact, left. But Esterday says the manager just told a fib to make the attention go away. And the press, she adds, needs to get a perspective on what actually matters. Esterday took time out of her day on Tuesday to answer questions from the Huffington Post.

Huffington Post: What is it like to be in the middle of a campaign-related media frenzy?
Esterday: It is nuts. Even going on the web for anything. There was a website in Cedar Rapids that said I had committed suicide. I understand that whoever wrote this meant it as a joke, but I have family in Cedar Rapids and I know people in Cedar Rapids and my mother committed suicide. So it wasn't a joke to me... It's taking it to an extreme and I guess in America now that's what people like and it's a shame that the media ran with this.

Does the press have misplaced priorities?
In this country, look at how many homeless people there are. There are millions. There are people just like me. I'm not the only parent who has had to raise two kids and barely makes $20,000 a year... This is supposed to be the United States of America, the strongest nation in the world, and we can't even provide places for our homeless. The media should be focusing on that.

Point taken. But could you set the record straight about the tip? Your manager says they left something but you contend it never happened.
If your phone is ringing from six in the morning till four in the afternoon and customers are saying what's wrong, the telephone lines are down, and it's because reporters are trying to get through, you say whatever you have to say [to get them to go away]. I don't know if they left a $100 tip or not but I haven't seen it yet. And none of the other waitresses have said they got the tip. [Editor's Note: after the tip controversy became a national story, the Clinton campaign returned to the restaurant and left $20].

Sen. Clinton talked about you - following this incident - in some of her speeches about women earning minimum wage and you seemed upset about it.
To all the politicians, if you talk to somebody and maybe their life interests you, don't just go down the road then and use them as part of your speech to get votes. I was never even asked that day if I'm a Democrat or a Republican or whatever. I was never asked whom I was behind. And then to go down and be called up that night [in a speech by Clinton], was I angry about it? Yes I was. Don't get me wrong they called me a few days later to ask if they could use me in the speech. And they sent me a release form, but they were already using me. So what the hell, I signed it.

How has this whole saga affected you and the restaurant?
There were phone calls going off the wall. It disrupted business and hurt it in some ways. I'm thankful I still have a job there and thank them very much for that. I'm sure it took money away from them. Out of my life, from day one of meeting her it has been turned upside down and not in a good way.

Does this change the way you are approaching the presidential election?
I've been an independent all my life. My mom was a Democrat and my father a Republican. I just sat back and watched them argue and stayed in the middle. But I'm not going to vote for Hillary. That is a definite. No one could pay me enough money. My opinion of her has changed drastically. The more I read and find out about her it changes more and more to the negative. I don't believe she can help out the working women of this world because I don't believe she gets it.

She complains about the press making a mountain out of a mole-hill and then runs around getting media attention for herself day after day after day... Ever look at yourself in the mirror honey?

This is yet another instance of the liberal Mrs. Clinton being "shocked" and "surprised".

Liberals claim that President Bush is a "moron", yet their chosen candidate, Mrs. Clinton, is always "shocked" and "surprised". She doesn't seem to be very informed on the issues, since she's always so "shocked" and "surprised". Will she be "shocked" and "surprised" when Governor Spitzer abandons his plan (that she supported) to give driver's licenses to illegals? No doubt, she'll once again be "shocked" and "surprised"

Whether it's the billing records from the Rose Law Firm, the details of Craig Livingstone's hiring, the futures market, Monica Lewinsky and the other women in her husband's life, Mrs. Clinton is always "shocked" and "surprised"

The only time Mrs. Clinton did't seem to be "shocked" and "surprised" was during her TWO affirmative votes on resolutions sponsored by Joseph Lieberman dealing with Iran. If you recall, both resolutions are, by almost everyone's account, the first steps necessary in order to attack Iran. Does it mean an attack on Iran is imminent? No. But, an attack could NOT have happened without the stated support of the United States Senate.

God bless our troops, who have done a MAGNIFICENT job with the surge.

This is Republican BS. I cannot remember a dinner or working buffet or anything similar where the restaurant did not put the gratuity directly on the tab. In this instance, Hillary probably did not directly pay the tab. She has finance people for that, as do other candidates. They don't win votes by overlooking tips on a regular or frequent basis.

Thanks to Sam Stein, we know someone from the Clinton campaign went back and left $20. We do not know what the total bill was, or if additional money was left with the manager.

If the service is bad and the waiter or waitress is difficult, I leave exactly nothing. If service and demeanor are very bad, I leave one penny to make sure the message is understood. Otherwise, I never leave less than a 20% tip. Usually more.

The article is vague about the number of people in attendance, and many other things that a reader needs to determine how credible the waitress is or is not. She sounds like a GOP pigeon, and sings like one too.

My take on this is that Rove is running around in the background doing his best to hammer Democrats. If that waitress wants to complain, she should look back seven years and count the contributions Bush has made to the quality of life in America.

I was a William Proxmire admirer. I believe the candidate with the lowest amount of campaign money spent should be the winner. Anyone agree?

Why is the waitress smarter than Sam Stein? Why are you obsessed with this? What little story line are you playing with, and why? Can you even think of writing about these larger issues, the things that will actually influence the way we live in the next decade, instead of acting like an idiot gossip rag editor whose mother dropped you on the head on a celebrities' shaved personhood? The press is sick, and you're part of the problem.

Uh Sammy, I read with interest the recent concerns about your journalistic integrity or lack thereof and thought, nothing could be THAT bad. But your little spin on this story is the worst kind of anti-worker hysteria, not to mention anti-Clinton. Anita Esterday also said, "I don't know if they left a $100 tip or not but I haven't seen it yet and none of the other waitresses have said they got the tip." Is it possible that the restaurant management, who were described in earlier stories as anti-Clinton, KEPT that tip and didn't give it to the staff??? This kind of reporting is really beneath Huff Post and I am going to let the management of Huff Post know.

Bush is preparing to attack Iran.
Many returning veterans are homeless and without medical care.
The war in Iraq rages on unabated.
Americans are losing their homes.
Americans are losing their constitutional rights.

Point taken. But could you set the record straight about the tip?

If the press had reported that the Clinton campaign had left an extravagant tip it would have become as stupid as John Edward's haircut!

This kind of imbecilic "story" being reported is why America is swirling down the drain! Who cares how big a tip they left?
I am more interested in what they say they will do for America, and the media should be so interested as well, not what clothes they buy, or where they ate, etc.

I'd like to thank Huffington for this venture into triviality.
It's a nice distraction from the news; butI for one can't wait for more news-plant exclusives.

Huffpost is a perfect example of what the woman is talking about.
Read this exchange:

Anita Esterday: "This is supposed to be the United States of America, the strongest nation in the world, and we can't even provide places for our homeless. The media should be focusing on that."

HuffingtonPost: "Point taken. But could you set the record straight about the tip?"

Are we in a mad house?

This is so stupid. I am ashamed that FluffPo gives this dumb article a prominent place.

In the hoopla surrounding a candidate's appearance somebody forgot to leave a tip. BFD. They were probably a little distracted by the security detail, the television detail, the wardrobe detail, etc. etc. and maybe each one thought someone else had taken care of it. From now on you can be sure the role of Waitress Tipper will be clearly defined.

The waitress is pretty whiney about something that could happen to anyone.
