Iowa Waitress Speaks Out: I Didn't Get Tip From Clinton, Media Has Misplaced Priorities

I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Maidrite

For the past week, Anita Esterday's life has been turned upside down. A single mother of two, she found herself in the middle of a media circus when it was reported that Sen. Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign failed to leave her a tip after they were waited on at a Maid-Rite in Toledo, Iowa. In the ensuing frenzy, the Maid-Rite manager insisted that a tip was, in fact, left. But Esterday says the manager just told a fib to make the attention go away. And the press, she adds, needs to get a perspective on what actually matters. Esterday took time out of her day on Tuesday to answer questions from the Huffington Post.

Huffington Post: What is it like to be in the middle of a campaign-related media frenzy?
Esterday: It is nuts. Even going on the web for anything. There was a website in Cedar Rapids that said I had committed suicide. I understand that whoever wrote this meant it as a joke, but I have family in Cedar Rapids and I know people in Cedar Rapids and my mother committed suicide. So it wasn't a joke to me... It's taking it to an extreme and I guess in America now that's what people like and it's a shame that the media ran with this.

Does the press have misplaced priorities?
In this country, look at how many homeless people there are. There are millions. There are people just like me. I'm not the only parent who has had to raise two kids and barely makes $20,000 a year... This is supposed to be the United States of America, the strongest nation in the world, and we can't even provide places for our homeless. The media should be focusing on that.

Point taken. But could you set the record straight about the tip? Your manager says they left something but you contend it never happened.
If your phone is ringing from six in the morning till four in the afternoon and customers are saying what's wrong, the telephone lines are down, and it's because reporters are trying to get through, you say whatever you have to say [to get them to go away]. I don't know if they left a $100 tip or not but I haven't seen it yet. And none of the other waitresses have said they got the tip. [Editor's Note: after the tip controversy became a national story, the Clinton campaign returned to the restaurant and left $20].

Sen. Clinton talked about you - following this incident - in some of her speeches about women earning minimum wage and you seemed upset about it.
To all the politicians, if you talk to somebody and maybe their life interests you, don't just go down the road then and use them as part of your speech to get votes. I was never even asked that day if I'm a Democrat or a Republican or whatever. I was never asked whom I was behind. And then to go down and be called up that night [in a speech by Clinton], was I angry about it? Yes I was. Don't get me wrong they called me a few days later to ask if they could use me in the speech. And they sent me a release form, but they were already using me. So what the hell, I signed it.

How has this whole saga affected you and the restaurant?
There were phone calls going off the wall. It disrupted business and hurt it in some ways. I'm thankful I still have a job there and thank them very much for that. I'm sure it took money away from them. Out of my life, from day one of meeting her it has been turned upside down and not in a good way.

Does this change the way you are approaching the presidential election?
I've been an independent all my life. My mom was a Democrat and my father a Republican. I just sat back and watched them argue and stayed in the middle. But I'm not going to vote for Hillary. That is a definite. No one could pay me enough money. My opinion of her has changed drastically. The more I read and find out about her it changes more and more to the negative. I don't believe she can help out the working women of this world because I don't believe she gets it.

Toledo is a very small town. How many other candidates have been there and what sort of tips did they leave?

It is really unfortunate Shillary will most likely get the nomination, all we're gonna hear from the regressive drooler wingnuts is a rerun of Clinton scandals etc.

A mother of two, barely scraping by on 20k a year, having trouble paying for healthcare.

Sounds like a bush republican to me.

I wonder whom she voted for?

Why is the Democratic party even thinking of nominating Hillary? That is by far the worst candidate any party could run! The dems would have better luck winning a national election with Ronald McDonald then this woman. If she wins the nomination, there mind as well not even be a national election b/c she will pretty much guarantee a Republican victory.Doesn't anyone realize that she is just as if not more corrupt then Bush? This woman has never not once given a definitive answer to ANY question that has been thrown at her. Who knows what her position on Iraq, Iran, Social Security, Taxation, ext. will be tomorrow. Voting for her is just as bad as voting for Bush. Who ever votes for her has no room what so ever to criticize the Bush Admin for corruption! She is just as bad! America needs REAL change. Vote for Kucinich. Someone who won't cower down to large cooperations or take illegal Chinese money. I sure hope that Obama or Edwards pulls ahead of her.

I think the whole incident shows the insanity of campaigns that run for months before the PRIMARIES AND CAUCUSES! The candidates are in such a flurry of grab and go actiivty that no one can possible get any idea what they might stand for.

That said, actions, in the absense of meaningful diaglogue, speaks volumes. To stiff a waitress, then use her as an example of how to help the working poor, and THEN later ask her for a release to do so . . . rather barbaric.

And I can't believe I am saying this, but it seems a little like seeking a court order to wiretap after you have your tape recording, doesn't it? Clean up your act, Hillary. . . your slip is showing!

Huffingtonpost, you are so anti-Hillary, I will not log in your site anymore. It's not that I'm so pro-Hillary, but I am tired of your bias.
Goodbye.

It kind of amazes me that their is so much resentment and negativity there is among posters. It's possible that Stein's question were a little bit provocative and insinuating, but honestly, what is wrong with this woman being allowed an avenue to share her beliefs? I found much of what she had to say interesting, and she seems like an interesting character who has things to say.
Honestly, the race is not going to hinge on a passing frenzy that is being treated completely out of whack by the mass media. The refusal to examine a piece of journalism on its merits and rather its implications is stifling to discussion and squarely opposite the principles by which true liberals ought live their lives. Those principles are liberty, privacy, and open-mindedness, and this woman is attempting to reclaim her right to all three.

"Slick" is the word that most associate with Hillary. She gives no straight answers and is willing to use every moment and person along the way. Mind your elbows and toes as she walks right over you in her almost desperate bid for head honcho. She also planted questions in her audience.

Oh, and then there's the whole sell-out-to-the-highest-bidder side of Hillary. Insurance companies, Walmart, you name the price and she'll take it. Morals be damned!

I purposely signed up here today so I can tell Arianna and her Huffpo that she has lost a reader. I won't be visiting this so-called news site anymore. I am a registered Independent and appreciate real news and real issues. This bombardment of Hillary bashing is so obvious it's ludicrous! I haven't decided who I will vote for and prefer to make my judgement based on the truth and not high school gossip bullcrap!
This news site is no better than all the other biased and propaganda news shows/sites that Arianna critizes. She is just as bad. Arianna, you lost one today and if you don't start taking a higher road, you'll lose a lot more intelligent readers!

OH, PLEASE...

Now they're getting on her for THAT??? The repukes really are "grasping at straws."

Here is a list of the "criticisms" so far:

1) A hint of cleavage on the Senate floor.
2) Has too throaty a laugh, laughs too loud and too much.
3) Claps too much.
4) Planted an environmental question at a press conference.
5) Failed to tip waitress.

She should definitely be censured by the full Senate and given 30 lashes with a wet noodle....

(Meanwhile, Drag Queen Rudia gets a total pass in the mass media....)
