Spitzer Abandons Plan To Give Driver's Licenses To Illegal Immigrants

New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer has decided to abandon a plan to issue driver's licenses to illegal immigrants, officials familiar with the decision told The Associated Press Tuesday night.

The governor is due to meet Wednesday morning with New York's congressional delegation, many of whom openly oppose the program. Debate over the issue also has spilled into New York Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's presidential campaign.

The governor's office signaled to New York lawmakers Tuesday that Spitzer will say at the meeting that he is shelving the plan and that immigration is a federal issue to be handled by Washington, according to congressional aides who spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because no formal announcement had been made.

I wonder if well-meaning folks like HumeSkeptic would be quite so tolerant if THEY had to compete directly with illegal aliens? If the people sneaking in were physicians, RNs, attorneys, engineers, CEOs, computer scientists, pharmacists, architects, CPAs, journalists, academicians, designers, politicians, pundits, theologians, etc., the southern border would be sealed tight by now.

But as long as it's merely blue-collar Americans bearing the brunt of the burden -- many of them single moms, or black, or hispanic or union members -- I suspect the enlightened few will continue to welcome our uninvited guests.

I'm a registered Democrat by the way; I almost always vote straight ticket. It kills me to see our Democratic "leadership" ignoring the will of the people. Don't they work for us?

To most of the above, in the meantime, while we're supposedly deporting all 12 million, how do you propose we keep them off the road on their way to, as someone posted above, prune some right-wing fat cat's garden or put up dry wall? Many posters have apparently decided that the injury or death of themselves or their loved ones in preferable to training these people how to drive. The cheering mob has yet to offer anything but a post-accident solution.

Why are we GIVING ANYONE licenses to drive? I have to pay for mine. It's called my tax dollars at work, right?

Also, I'm (and I know this is wrong of me) ASSUMING THEY HAVE TO TAKE A DRIVER'S TEST in order to get the license but what happens if they fail?

For those that missed it, double-talking Conniving has just issued a statement on Spitzer's withdrawal of his outrageous plan to provide drivers licenses to illegal criminals. Conniving said: "I supported Gov. Spitzer's plan to give illegals drivers licenses before I supported his plan to NOT give illegals drivers licenses."

And there are still some clueless Dems that wonder why over 50% of voters would NEVER vote for the double-talking Conniving. Amazing.

Virginia had a system similar to this which has been scrapped after 9-11. The problem in Virginia was that there were ringers who would take the test for you, so there was no guarantee that the licensee passed any tests other than the driving test in order to get their license.

Want to put a screeching halt on illegals??

Do like we did here in Holland. 2 years ago we passed a law making it MANDATORY that everyone must have a health insurance policy.

Thing is to buy a policy you must show 3 valid forms of ID. passport, permanent residency card and birth certificate.

Sure has helped here.
