Spitzer Abandons Plan To Give Driver's Licenses To Illegal Immigrants

New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer has decided to abandon a plan to issue driver's licenses to illegal immigrants, officials familiar with the decision told The Associated Press Tuesday night.

The governor is due to meet Wednesday morning with New York's congressional delegation, many of whom openly oppose the program. Debate over the issue also has spilled into New York Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's presidential campaign.

The governor's office signaled to New York lawmakers Tuesday that Spitzer will say at the meeting that he is shelving the plan and that immigration is a federal issue to be handled by Washington, according to congressional aides who spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because no formal announcement had been made.

My blockhead Governor Eliot Spitzer has finally accepted the fact that over 70% of New Yorkers didn't agree with his plan to legalize illegal aliens who are in this Great State with drivers licenses.H­e may become a one term governor because of this hare brained scheme.He also put the Democrats on the hot seat concerning Illegal Immigration which is good,any Presidental Candidate who wants to give amnesty to illegals (no matter how long here, illegally) doesn't deserve to be President of this Great Nation.The majority of Americans do not welcome illegal aliens under no circumstan­ces.We welcome immigrants as long as they enter legally and are not a burden to the already strapped American tax payer.

There is a practical question that hasn't been answered, that of roads filled with untrained drivers who haven't had to pass a basic road test.These drivers are a danger to everyone, including those argue they should drive untrained. While all 12 million illegals are rounded up and deported, what do you propose to do about this, or would you rather you or a loved one be killed by an untrained, untested driver just to prove a point?

OHPLEASE - we cannot apply what happened back in the 1600s. We have to have order in order to get ahead. Illegal is just that. No one said anything about legal immigrants. We have to have a process in place. And if we outsource our industry to Mexico then why are they still coming to the U.S.? Something very wrong here. Sooner or later this all will catch up since the companies make all the money but they don't pay the people, the people sooner or later can't be buying their products.

Way to go Spitzer! Now you will have hundreds, if not thousands of untested and unlicensed illegal aliens driving around New York State and elsewhere. If licensed at least you could make sure that they knew the rules of the road and they knew how to drive. They will now drive without licenses. How else will they get around? What an accomplishment.

I am so happy that Spitzer abandoned his stupid plan. I am all for LEGAL immigration, but to give illegals licenses legitimizes them in a way that is undeserved. They are breaking our laws just by being here! They could have used those licences to vote, or to tak away trucking jobs from American citizens, making our roads less safe. Since most illegals don't want to take the time to even learn English, the next step would be signs in Spanish and English after taking a driving test in Spanish. Ridiculous! Now, I am a Democrat, but like many many of us, I don't think that we should pander to a segment of the population that does not belong here in the first place for votes. (if that was Spitzer's intention; I am not sure what the heck he was thinking.) Thank you Lou Dobbs, for keeping on this issue like a bulldog!! I love Lou, he says what we are all thinking, and I was thinking what an idiot Spitzer is, and Lou said it best. I am disappointed with Hillary for her wishy washy not taking a stand on this issue. A leader leads by taking stands, popular or not. Well this issue is popular with the American people, we don't want illegals here, we don't want them pandered to, we don't want them driving, period!
