To her roles as Hollywood actress, UN goodwill ambassador and mother, Angelina Jolie can now add another - writer for the Economist.

The high-minded economic and political weekly has secured a sprinkling of stardust for The World in 2008, which is published tomorrow and contains predictions for next year.

Good for Angelina . . . I will pass judgement after I have read her articles . . . I am so tired of narrow minded individuals who think that just because someone is an actor that actor equals no brains. The opposite is very often the case . . . the few that I have known have all been very intelligent people with a wide range of interests . . . the one best years ago at university was then a political science major . . . instead of attacting Angelina it might be an idea to reflect on the fact that she doesn't have to do anything for anyone . . .yet she is giving back . . . how many of her detractors can say they are doing anything to give back to society . . .

Stop the insanity! It's funny she's the same age as me and I can remember, not so long ago in fact, she being quite the party animal, drug doing, jumping into swimming pools after winning golden globes.

People! She's just an actress! That's it. nothing more. People have annointed her the next Mother Thersa, well that she aint! She's another Madonna. Somebody that knows marketplace and marketing. She's followed her life so far. Think about it: Change up your reputation every three or so years.

She's one of these people that will never be happy. Why can't she get along w/ her dad? She thinks errrr... people think she's the new Audrey Hepburn? Give me a break. And what's w/ all her kids constantly globe trotting? How in the fuck could that be good FOR THEM????????

I have to agree with SpanishDancer----much as I'd love to admire the woman, the whole horse and pny show is a bit over the top for me. Perfect face, figure, eyes, boyfriend, multicultural household, ad campaigns, big budget film roles, volunteer gigs in the developing world---and now, surprise!---she has also accomplished what thousands of young writers would give their careers for, an Economist by-line. For god's sake? Has she ever had to exert effort for anything??? Those of us who do not get to wear designer dresses for free, or hang at the belt of Brad Pitt and breeze into the best private school in NYC to pick up our bilingual son, ---who do live and work in the third world, earn respect incrementally, suffer rejection daily, and pay of exorbitant college loans just to aspire to certain credentials, much less be handed them to us, can justly say the snarled edge of this envy is not unjustified or a relfection of our own pinched ego. Get real, reading public, there are people in this world who accomplish things, and others who appear to do so.

I wish I could learn to leave her alone and just admire her like everyone else does. But I strongly suspect that there is something not quite right about her. I do not doubt her love for her children and her desire to do something to help the world's less fortunate. She is so lucky that she has the money to do that (unlike the rest of us, who can not show we care quite as easily but care all the same.)

Unfortunately, I think, she is also EXTREMELY manipulative. She cuts deals with news organizations to get flattering coverage (like planting copies of Newsweek in little Maddox's hands; selling baby photos to TimeWarner; It was even once reported that she put copies of yes, the Economist, all over one of her movie trailers.) Shortly after these deals, VOILA!, another B.S. Top Ten list with her in it and, of course, on the cover.

And so I can't help but wonder if this is yet another one of her under-the-table, backroom deals. I think she cares about her OWN IMAGE makeover (which is the most remarkable in our time - that's why people find her so fascinating) almost as much, if not more than, her charity work.

If Citizen Angelina can bring the sufferings of Darfur to the forefront, the 2.5 million women and children at the Iraq-Syria boundary who are being raped and languishing in famine, if she can manage to rile up the sensitivities of our politicians to care for these forgotten people, then so be it.
.
As a volunteer of Doctors Without Borders, I have witness Angelina care for the earthquake victims in Afghanistan. It was below zero temperature, and our team had just begun to make way thru the rugged terrain, and from a distant, there was this white woman distributing blankets and food.
.
As we get near this make-shift relief center, I was so surprise how she diligently cuddled some of the children, and wipe snow away from their faces as she distribute the blanket. She giggled with the children even for few minutes reminds them that America cares ?
.
For once I was so proud to be an American. And Ginzaman, what have you done to serve your country, and most important, why do you begrudge Citizen Angelina?

Is she going to be in the London Economist's swimsuit issue?

I agree, she is smart. She and her publicist(s) know how to manipulate the media in a good way to bring attention to various important causes. And also to drop those juicy tidbits when her career seems to be slowing down. Do we really need to know how many lovers she's had and where Brad fits into that list. I'm not officially confirming that we're a couple. But he's one of the best I've ever had. Enough already.
