Republican presidential hopeful John McCain says he respects Hillary Rodham Clinton and that he said as much when a woman used the word "bitch" to describe her.

"How do we beat the bitch?" the woman asked Monday at a McCain event in South Carolina.

Watch the video here.

....On Tuesday, CNN's Rick Sanchez raised the question of whether McCain should have admonished the woman, and McCain's campaign criticized that criticism on Wednesday.

"Most people who have seen it are looking at it as a real mistake on his part in terms of the way he handled it," Sanchez said on the cable network's "Out in the Open."

McCain's South Carolina campaign manager, Buzz Jacobs, said in a statement Wednesday: "It not only reflects poorly on him, but on CNN. If Mr. Sanchez had even the faintest perspective on the race for the White House, he would know that Senator McCain has expressed his utmost respect for Senator Clinton numerous times on the campaign trail, as he did at Monday's event in Hilton Head."

Hours later, the McCain campaign was using the controversy to raise money for his candidacy.

Campaign manager Rick Davis e-mailed supporters, saying, "We are asking you to help us fight Rick Sanchez and CNN and stand with John McCain. Please make your most generous contribution from $25 up to the maximum limit of $2,300 to the only candidate who can defeat Hillary Clinton."

Update: Politico's Jonathan Martin notes that McCain's fundraising email is also highly dishonest:

Irony aside, the McCain camp misrepresents the facts of the encounter with the lady in South Carolina who asked, "How do we beat the bitch?" McCain did not first respond by noting his respect for Clinton before talking up his electability, as Davis asserts in the email.

Rather, he laughed along with the rest of the crowd, cracked a joke and then laughed some more at another joke before deeming the inquiry "a good question." Then he cited favorable polling data. After all this, he noted his respect for his colleague.

McCain's campaign didn't respond when asked about the discrepancy.

Hey - we use words in the context of our culture - The problem is that sometimes people do not realize that they are not in their culture. When we get out in the world we have to behave - regardless of our individual cultural values.

Saudi gang-rape victim is jailed
By Frances Harrison
BBC News

An appeal court in Saudi Arabia has doubled the number of lashes and added a jail sentence as punishment for a woman who was gang-raped.

The victim was initially punished for violating laws on segregation of the sexes - she was in an unrelated man's car at the time of the attack.

When she appealed, the judges said she had been attempting to use the media to influence them.

The attackers' sentences - originally of up to five years - were doubled.

Extra penalties

According to the Arab News newspaper, the 19-year-old woman, who is from Saudi Arabia's Shia minority, was gang-raped 14 times in an attack in the eastern province a year-and-a-half ago.

Seven men from the majority Sunni community were found guilty of the rape and sentenced to prison terms ranging from just under a year to five years.

But the victim was also punished for violating Saudi Arabia's laws on segregation that forbid unrelated men and women from associating with each other. She was initially sentenced to 90 lashes for being in the car of a strange man.

On appeal, the Arab News reported that the punishment was not reduced but increased to 200 lashes and a six-month prison sentence.

The rapists also had their prison terms doubled. But the sentences are still low considering they could have faced the death penalty.

The Arab News quoted an official as saying the judges had decided to punish the girl for trying to aggravate and influence the judiciary through the media.

The victim's lawyer was suspended from the case, has had his licence to work confiscated, and faces a disciplinary session.

John McCain is a pathetic loser.

I still remember the Chelsea remark.

Does he think he is being "witty" or even "funny"

All he really stands for is a Bush "suck-up".

In defense of the Repubs (God help me), the Democrats on this board have called Senator Clinton much worse. The snake-handler wing of the Repub party are trained from birth to hate on command (are we still supposed to hate the French?) so they're obviously morons - what's OUR excuse? You clowns are acting like this election is a beauty contest. *Add Dem candidate name here* is our last hope for keeping another fascist nutcase like Scalia off the high court. And another Scalia solidifying the hard right hold on the court would absolutely sink America. Makes no difference who holds the other branches of power after that.

It is foolish for Republicans to believe they can beat presumptive Democrat presidential nominee Senator Clinton by attacking her personally. She will be beaten in this election by challenging her documented lust for European style socialism in the United States.

As with the 'N-word', in certain circles it's used in an affectionate manner, not meant to be derogatory. If Hilarious took it the wrong way, that seems to be her problem, yes?

Maybe, she should have said B-I-I-A-A-T-C-H!

Thank You Senator McCain for your service to the country.
Now please take your perpetually befuddled look and hit the trail. Perhaps you can team up with 'Buffy' and handle the 'bitch slaying' end of her franchise. Adios Amigo!

This is rich. Somebody else refers to Hillary as a bitch and now it's McCain's fault? They want an apology from him instead of the offender that said it?
Get a grip, folks.

Well, once again John McCain disappoints. He doesn't have the spine to denounce vulgartiy and bad manners from people in his party. What that person said was clearly rude and offensive. He should have said something. But of course what the Bush campaign did to him in South Carolina was disgusting and unforgiveable. He didn't have the gumption then to stand up to the people in his own party that tried to defile him and his family in such an underhanded way. Not only did he not stand up, he sucked up, which really disgusted me. That's what the republican party has become- the party of smear and fear, and instead of calling them on it, he sinks to their level.

I am surprised McCain did not burst out laughing. You have to admit sometimes the truth spoken bluntly is hilarious. I mean its not like we do not all know Hillary is a superbitch.

Remember this!! If Hillary does well tonight in the debates. The New York Post headline will be...."THE BITCH IS BACK"
Who ever the Nominees are this year it is going to be one nasty election run. The Republicans are masters of the smear and name calling.
