More than 1 million cases of chlamydia were reported in the United States last year -- the most ever reported for a sexually transmitted disease, federal health officials said Tuesday.

Officials at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said they think better and more intensive screening accounts for much of the increase, but added that chlamydia was not the only sexually transmitted disease on the rise.

And now our brilliant leaders are being pushed by a drug manufacture to have mandatory injections for our young daughters of a drug they developed, but have no long term study of worthiness or side effects, but they claim MIGHT prevent cervical cancer when our kids grow up.

Now having 2 young daughters myself, this scares me. The drug company is lobbying congress to force everyone to pay them for something that has no track record, and to use our kids for the test subjects.

I am sure to our regrets this too will become a mandate, and we will be forced to play Russian roulette with our daughters future health so some in congress, and the drug manufacture can make a hell of a lot of money.

But stories like this dont matter when you have Brittany or Lance dating a child star.

yup, the in the US we sure do seem to excel at certain things. Like STDs, Wars, death, largest drop in wages, largest drop in substantial jobs, most without health care and biggest drop in education for all modern leading nation. (excluding 3rd world countries here, but we could be one soon and then we will be in the running)

Yup, here in the good old US we have dropped the bar and continue to drive all those things that are marked as showing a countries well being, and drive them into the ground. But hey, thats ok, because when millions suffer, there is always a couple people who make obscene profits.
And isnt that what important. How rich can we make the already rich..

Should the schools teach information about the increased odds of disease for practicing male homosexuals in addition to teaching about condoms?

Guess that "abstinence only" campaign is doing just fine. Thanks again Dubya.

Not in the least surprising. The US has been the target of a massive ignorance campaign where parents do not talk to their kids about sex, and schools are forced to carry abstinence-only curricula. Kids are told the condoms don't work. Naturally, they have sex- 2 million years of evolution are programming for that- and naturally, since they've been told condoms don't work, they don't use them. There's a lot of sickness, death and heartache that christofascists are responsible for. I hope they burn in the hell they believe in.

As a researcher in endocrinology and immunology, I can perhaps shed some light on at least one overlooked contributing factor to the rising rates of STDs - the overuse and dependence on hormonal contraceptives as the main line of defense against pregnancy. I was quite dismayed that that an elementary school had decided to distribute the Pill instead of education on how to prevent both pregnancy and disease if one is sexually active. The ignorance is shocking - many adolescents don't actually grasp the fact that oral contraceptives do not protect against HIV or other STDs - and they can, in fact, disrupt the developing endocrine system since these hormones were never tested in kids to see what the long term consequences may be.

I am not surprised at all. America believes in keeping its inhabitants ignorant about sex but at the same time, sex is everywhere. Remember everyone, Target sells Durex condoms for 3.74 a box.
