Reuters:

An eight-passenger sport utility vehicle, the Chevrolet Tahoe Hybrid from General Motors Corp, won the "Green Car of the Year" award at the Los Angeles Auto Show on Thursday.

The Tahoe Hybrid will be the first full-size hybrid SUV on the market when it goes on sale in early 2008. It is also the first model from GM that uses a hybrid system developed jointly with BMW AG, Daimler AG's Mercedes-Benz, and Chrysler.

All these good liberals will go out and buy these hybrid cars and SUV's and pay extra to get them. Then 20 years from now they will realize that it didn't do anything to stop global warming.

The jokes on you.

Soon we'll be hearing from the Pentagon about their new line of green tanks.

Detroit is dying a slow, subsidized death if the gradually shrinking big 3 think of this as market innovation. The best hope for Michigan is to get rid of Dingell, his lobbyist wife, and to try and get at least one Toyota or Honda assemblyline built in the state.

I guess the Honda hydrogen powered car that just emitted water wasn't green enough. You can't believe anything you read.

I am sure with this car there is no change in the mileage and it is just the way the test was conducted with the hybrid technology interfering with the machine rather than greater efficiency

A perfect example why we need standardization in calling something "green" when it isn't.
20MPG is not Green, it is a lie, and now those people who actually think they "need" an SUV will feel better about owning one - when they shouldn't.

In real world test though Ive read the Chevy SUV is still only around 20mpg. Up from all gas, but still? Its all about the huge profit ratio of the SUV for the American auto maker. The Hummer beat out of Ev1 back when GM had a good electric car that worked, and of the ones left, still going strong today. Its all about getting the largest profit margin. GM , Ford, and others will fight hard to keep these gas pigs. Like they say, put lip stick on a pig and its still a pig. Making a 14 mpg car get 20, is still a pig.

Unimpressive .... MOST unimpressive. If that's the green 'car of the year' no wonder Detroit is getting spanked so hard by Yokohama.

But let's not minimize the challenges, the smaller Toyota Highlander hybrid with less cargo and towing capacity still only gets 27 mpg in the city. If you want 6 passenger capability and some cargo/hauling utility, you can't get 40 mpg today. If you want 2 passenger capability (plus 2 uncomfortable or small passengers), 50 is doable.

That's really the challenge Detroit is not meeting ... okay, when we take half a dozen kids and their football gear to practice, it's not going to be in the Prius, we get it ... but most of the time we're driving to work or to the store or to the coast for the weekend with 1 or 2 people in the car, and we're not being offered the electric or biodiesel or hydrogen vehicle to do *that* with far greater efficiency than we do tody.

While visiting the University of Wisconsin, some engineering students there showed me a full size Chevy SUV they built that gets 35+ mpg. It was a diesel hybrid. Really nice.

My point is, Detroit is not trying. Obviously putting profit ahead of anything. These college kids can outdo them easily. To give GM an award like this is a joke.

Is this a joke?

I had a '76 GMC Vandura with a straight six that got 30 mpg on the highway and 26 mpg in town. And it stayed at that consumption rate for the twenty-plus years I owned it.

These guys are just making cars that are heavier and the Hybrid technology is being wasted on getting that fat pig down to the gas station.

Don't you get it, people? They aren't reducing gas consumption. They are pushing around more junk with the same amount of fuel.

It's the oil companies who run American auto manufacturing. And it certainly isn't the market.

If it were, we wouldn't all be driving Hondas.

I'd love to own an American car. If they ever make one that doesn't insult my intelligence, or sicken my soul, I will.

And it gets 20 whole miles to the gallon! Very green! However, my VW Jetta diesel, which I run on biodiesel, gets about 50 mpg.

Calling an SUV green is extremely offensive and expousing the mere idea that a bloated status symbol for selfish fuel wasters be considered for a green car award should be considered a ecological crime of the first magnitude.
